Spending the day at a beach club really is one of the best things you can do in Bali.

Choosing the best beach club in Bali will depend on where you are staying, the amenities you need, your holiday budget, and whether you are travelling to Bali with kids.

Uluwatu Beach Clubs

The beauty of Uluwatu beach clubs is most offer incredible views and stunning white sandy beaches.

Most are family-friendly, so you can settle in for the entire day with your kids too.

Here are a few of our favourite beach clubs near Uluwatu, Bali.

1. Sundays Beach Club

Sundays Beach Club has a special place in our hearts as we got married at The Ungasan Resort and enjoyed our post-wedding recovery day at Sundays Beach Club on one of Bali’s most beautiful beaches.

Returning recently, it was interesting to see how the club has evolved from the simple beach club it once was.

The private beach club is definitely fancier than back then.

However, it still has the same certain rustic charm, great drinks and good food.

Most importantly, it offers a calm oasis on its own private white sand beach, which is very different from some of the bigger day clubs further north.

Book some beds or a cabana on the beach to save your wait time and ensure you get an umbrella (it can get hot out there).

Entry is via reception at The Ungasan where you’ll follow the stairs and pathways down to their inclinator that carries you to the club on the beach.

Sundays Beach Club entrance fee:

Weekdays – Adult IDR 400,000 | Child 7-12 IDR 200,000 || Weekend – Adult IDR 450,000 | Child 7-12 IDR 250,000

2. El Kabron

El Kabron is one of the most established of Bali’s beach clubs.

It has long been a popular destination for the day on Dreamland Beach.

Spend the day relaxing by the infinity pool surrounded by palm trees in the Hedonism Lounge.

Or, book a prime position to experience one of Uluwatu’s stunning sunsets at its Sunset Theater.

Either way, El Kabron promises good times in this magical Bukit spot.

3. Ulu Cliffhouse

One of the beautiful beach clubs on the Bukit, Ulu Cliffhouse is perched on an iconic Uluwatu cliff top with panoramic views across the ocean below.

Ulu Cliffhouse offers a number of different areas to spend your day relaxing.

Start on a daybed by the 25-metre-long infinity swimming pool, dine at The Cliff Restaurant or venture down the cliff to the Ocean Deck with low-tide access to a private beach.

Ulu also has ticketed special events like world-famous DJs throughout the year.

Ulu is also home to seven boutique suites at  The Clubhouse at Ulu, for those who want to spend a little longer in Uluwatu.

4. Roosterfish Beach Club

Rustic and ultra-relaxed Roosterfish is one of the newer Bali beach clubs, offering a chilled-out experience on Pandawa Beach. A quieter part of the island, spend a day swimming, eating and relaxing at Roosterfish, before the crowds catch on.

Roosterfish features a large outdoor pool overlooking the beach, a grassed area with casual seating and cabanas that can be reserved in advance.

They hold a Sunday brunch, “Penguins Love a Bath” from 11 am to 4 pm, every Sunday. A buffet brunch is served, backed by beats from their resident DJ. Tickets are about IDR 499,000++ per person.

A great option for families, there is plenty of room to run around, explore the beach, activities on Sunday and a tailored kids menu for the little ones.

Roosterfish entrance fee: Free. But you may need to pay an entrance fee to Pandawa Beach.

5. Tropical Temptation Beach Club

Formerly Cattamaran Beach Club, Tropical Temptation Beach Club is located on the stunning Melasti Beach, one of the most beautiful Bali beaches.

It’s here you’ll find fine white sand and breathtaking limestone cliffs.

Guests can settle into a spot by the pool, and enjoy the resident DJ, some fresh snacks, pizzas and drinks.

Special offers include bottle service, shisha and even a drone photography service for those looking to, quite literally, elevate their Instagram game.

Tropical Temptation Beach Club entrance fee: Free but reservations are recommended.

Opening Hours: 10 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 9 pm on weekends.

Family-friendly? Yes, however, children aren’t allowed in the pool area after 5 pm.

Children are only allowed in the lounge area and must be supervised at all times.

Melasti Beach Jl. Melasti Ungasan, Badung

6. White Rock Beach Club

One of Bali’s newest beach clubs, White Rock Beach Club is also on Melastic Beach in South Bali.

Choose one of their (many) day bed or lounge packages and spend the day between the pool, the ocean and the deliciously global food menu featuring everything from Indonesian favourites like Nasi Goreng to Western comfort food and fresh seafood.

Every Sunday, they hold a market from 3 pm to 8 pm which is perfect for families.

As the name suggests, this tree-house-style Azul Beach Club in Legian is thoughtfully decorated in nautical blue hues, bringing the Indian Ocean tones directly in.

Book a table for lunch or dinner or enjoy a dip and refreshing cocktail in the adults-only stunning infinity pool.

The restaurant menu features a range of international and pan-Asian dishes, with vegan and vegetarian options.

8. Mari Beach Club

Mari Beach Club is located at Batu Belig, on a prime beachfront position in Seminyak.

An artfully created space has been designed to fit seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape, inspired by Mount Agung, Bali’s famous rice terraces.

There are curated break-out spaces from VIP daybeds, surrounding the river-shaped tidal pool, VIP bungalows, lounges, bean bags, couches and cabanas.

Book a spot for the day and taste their creative cocktails and snacks or settle in at Sole for some al fresco dining.

The menu showcases Japanese and Mediterranean flavours, enjoyed by diners as they take in the Indian Ocean views and sea breeze.

A long-time favourite, Potato Head Beach Club, is a popular spot for everyone from couples to friends and families.

The sizeable venue offers cute spots to enjoy a meal, day beds and their beachfront pool with a swim-up bar that continue to draw the crowds as one of the most loved and best beach clubs in Bali.

With three restaurants and a killer drinks menu, you must try one of their deliciously strong signature cocktails and settle in for a whole day of people-watching and relaxation poolside at Potato Head.

Potato Head has evolved over the years from a simple beach club to a cultural hub, offering daily yoga and beach workouts, and hosting art shows, great music, films, DJs and cultural events.

You can also stay on-site at Potato Head Suites and Katamama Suites, an eco-luxury suite hotel.

Sustainability is at the heart of their business ethos with their menu crafted from more than 90% local produce.

11. Savaya Bali

Savaya Bali (formerly known as Omnia Day Club) is one of Bali’s best beach clubs for those who want to party.

It is a proper party-down day club with the vibrant atmosphere you’d expect.

Coming to Bali with a group of friends? Celebrating before getting married on the island?

Savaya Beach Club could be the club for you; it’s the place to let your hair down all day and dance up in the Cube all night.

With a constantly changing schedule of world-class DJs and acts, book a weekend down in Uluwatu and spend a day at Savaya to the backdrop of panoramic ocean views.

Savaya Day Club entrance fee:

There is a smart casual dress code. You will not be allowed entry with beer-branded singlets, cut-off clothing or athleticwear.

Still one of our longtime favourite beach clubs, you can’t go wrong with Ku De Ta.

Settle in from morning to night under their iconic red umbrellas in the heart of Seminyak.

Ku De Ta is a great choice for couples, families and friends; a good mix between fun and relaxation, without the full-blown party vibe. We often even pop into Ku De Ta for breakfast on the weekend, while in Bali (often with a cheeky mimosa added on).

We then make sure we have a swim and grab a daybed before they fill up (best to pre-book a daybed).

Ku De Ta entrance fee: Free

There isn’t a minimum spend at Ku De Ta. But, you pay about Rp. 2,500,000 to reserve a day bed (for up to 4 people sharing the day bed) and that is credited towards food and beverage.

Opening Hours: From 8 am daily

Family-friendly? Yes. Children under 12 aren’t allowed on the second floor.

Ku De Ta has a great Family Sunday program with kids’ activities.

13. SugarSand

Located on Double Six beach, part of Hotel Indigo, SugarSand really is in the heart of Seminyak.

A cosy spot, across the road from the sand, this is a calmer club that is perfect for a quiet lunch, swim and afternoon relaxation session.

It’s ideal if you are a guest of Hotel Indigo and you don’t want to stray too far, as we were on our visit.

Particularly, with a toddler in tow.

From SugarSand, work your way across the beach to La Plancha to watch the sunset with the crowds before moving on to dinner.

SugarSand is accessible via Hotel Indigo Seminyak or via the beach on Jalan Double Six.

SugarSand entrance fee: Free.

To use a daybed they require a min. spend of about IDR 500,000. You cannot reserve beds.

14. La Brisa

More than just a beach club, La Brisa is an experience and has quickly become one of the top beach clubs in Bali for Summer sundowners.

Crafted from reclaimed wood from more than 500 old fisherman boats, this Canggu beach club is an architectural marvel.

The space is divided into a restaurant, beach club and break-out spaces for events and special occasions.

Book lunch and stay for the afternoon and pull up one of their cosy deck chairs to enjoy one of their epic Echo Beach sunset sessions. There’s no better way to end the day.

In line with its community-focused ethos, La Brisa Bali hosts a Farmer’s Day each Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, where visitors can buy organic produce, homemade treats, and zero-waste staples.

Finns Beach Club is more of a destination than a beach club.

Visiting Bali with a big group of friends or family? This Canggu club could be the perfect place to spend the day and night.

Join one of their daily ocean yoga classes then settle in for the day after some breakfast.

Dine at one of their restaurants like Sushi Bar Bali or Mumbai Kitchen.

Or join the partygoers for happy hour between 7 pm and 9 pm and stay on for a dance to their Finns After Dark DJs.

With an infinity pool overlooking the beach, swim-up bars, cosy cocktail lounge areas and a Mediterranean-style restaurant, there is plenty to entertain during a day spent at Cafe del Mar.

At the Beach Club, Sun Loungers are available for walk-ins for about IDR 800,000 min. spend (for 2 people) and day beds are IDR 2,000,000 min. spend for up to 6 people.

Known as the must-visit sunset-watching spot in Canggu, The Lawn is a favourite with visitors and ex-pats alike.

A casual, relaxed beach club, The Lawn is one of the best places in Canggu to meet friends for a cocktail or two and a swim in their beachfront pool as twilight sets in.

One of the more understated beach clubs in Bali, The Lawn is a much more laid-back option for those who aren’t quite ready for the hype or crowds at Finn’s Beach Club.

A Bali beach club with more reasonable prices Vue Beach Club is a small, laid-back style space that is part of the LV8 hotel Canggu.

The location on Canggu Beach makes it a lovely spot to witness an iconic Bali sunset.

Lembongan Beach Clubs

22. Sandy Bay Beach Club

Sandy Bay Beach Club is located on the west coast of beautiful Nusa Lembongan island, the perfect day trip from Bali.

Book a table at the restaurant or choose a day trip package for your group to spend a relaxing day by the pool.

24. Sundara Beach Club

Boasting Bali’s longest beachfront pool at a huge 57 meters in length, Sundara Beach Club is a luxurious beach club.

Part of the gorgeous Four Seasons Resort, Sundara doesn’t take reservations so be sure to arrive early to grab a spot.

Bookings include amenities such as towels, sunscreen, water and access to changing rooms and showers.

Cleverly, there is an adults-only sundeck chill-out zone at one end and a Family Zone down the other.

How to Get to Ranong

• It’s important to check the weather in Southern Thailand as the wet season can get very wet and Ranong is the rainiest in the province. Myanmar and the Indian Ocean border Rangong to the west, the weather in Ranong can get we with an 8-month rainy season. The best time to visit Ranong is between September and May.
• I arrived by car from Chumphon (which takes about 2 hours) having flown from Bangkok to Chumphon with Nok Air a few days prior. Chumphon is also where the nearest train station is, so you will need to book a transfer from this town if you are taking the train from Bangkok to Chumphon.
• It is possible to fly directly from Bangkok to Ranong (search flights with Skyscanner here).
• Phuket to Ranong takes about 5 hours by car. Our Phuket guides will help you plan your visit to the popular Thai destination.
• You can reach Ranong from Myanmar in 45 minutes by boat. 
• Ranong is a popular stopover stop on the way to Koh Phayam or Koh Chang Noi. Ranong to Koh Phayam takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours by boat, depending on which boat type you choose. Check Koh Phayam ferry prices here.
• There are flights from Ranong to Krabi via Bangkok. Allow a full day for travel. Traveling by private car takes a little less time. Check prices here.

What to Do in Ranong Thailand

Try Some Authentic Ranong Food 

When considering what to do in Ranong, Thailand, what to eat should be at the front of my mind too. There is so much delicious local food on offer with many dishes influenced by the Chinese-Thai ethnic mix of the area. 

From Chumphon to Rangong along Route 4 there are several places to stop for local treasures and delicacies.

We made a quick stop at Viruch’s Farm to peruse the local products and then made our way to the Tabli District where we tasted the most delicious and famous Chinese Sala-Bao in Thailand.

You can find these bun shops lining the street on both sides and each shop takes their bun-making very seriously, they are simply delicious! Stops like this make the road trip between provinces much more fun.

We stopped for a traditional Thai lunch at Kour Charoen Restaurant, one of the best restaurants in Rangong, before making our way to Rattana Rangsan Palace, a historical landmark in Rangong.

This palace was built to commemorate the visit of three monarchs: King Rama V in 1890, King Rama VI in 1909, and King Rama VII in 1928.  The palace is in perfect order and the grounds are impeccable.

Take a Ranong Dinner Cruise on The Royal Andaman

One of my favourite experiences was a Ranong dinner cruise on The Royal Andaman.

This unique classic Thai boat takes guests back in time to the mining era of 1890, following the footsteps of King Rama V (Chulalongkorn). 

Not only is every single native dish served on this dinner cruise authentic to the King’s time, but guests are adorned with “Peranakan” when they board, which is the traditional Malayan-Chinese folk dress that was worn for important ceremonies.

The cruise includes a full dinner and beautiful authentic dance entertainment, and it ends with experiencing an ancient ritual paying respect to the water spirits. 

Local sailors and fishermen used half a coconut shell filled with marigolds and candles which they sent floating in the ocean as a thank-you offering for their life, career, and prosperity.

Guests are invited to participate in this ritual at the end of the cruise by offering their very own shell filled with marigold blooms and a lit candle.

Ranong Hot Springs

Rangong contains various natural attractions including hot springs and unspoiled mangrove forests.

Our tour took one afternoon to explore the Porn Rang Hot Springs which is located in the Ngao National Park. The park is filled with over a dozen different pools of varying temperatures, some completely natural and others have been built into man-made pools with ladders. 

You have the opportunity during your visit to hike, picnic, dip in the pools, and explore the park. I highly advise going early or during a less-peak time to avoid the crowds and to have the grounds and pools more to yourself.

Visit the Villages Near Ranong

Book a tour to the Ranong Mining Community (the town was originally a tin-mining outpost in the 1800s), including lunch at Had Som Pan Village.

Visited Ngao Village after lunch and feast on roasted cashews and shop for local products. Guests are also invited to make their own ceramic artwork during a tour.

Ranong Waterfalls and Wats

Not on our list this time but worth noting and a visit if waterfalls make you happy is the Punyaban Waterfall and Ngao Waterfall in Ranong.

As well as the Koh Sok National Park which is 150 km from Ranong where you can experience the usual national park hiking, canoeing, and botanical viewing activities as well as encounters with elephants and a night Safari.

Ranong Canyon is an absolute must if you are seeking a quiet spot all to yourself to enjoy nature and a beautiful backdrop for a picnic.

We didn’t make time for the temples in Ranong this trip but they are worth visiting to experience the beauty of Thai temples with Burmese-style influences. There are several pretty temples in the city which you can visit for free.

Wat na Muang, is the oldest temple, built more than a century ago. Wat Baan Ngao is much newer and it is located in front of a waterfall with the same name, if you are feeling brave you can climb the temple hill and you will be rewarded with beautiful Buddhist bells.

Ranong Day Trips

Of course, no Southern Thailand itinerary would be complete without visiting the famed picturesque islands of this part of Thailand. That is just what we did on our last day in Rangong.

We took a full-day sea tour via speedboat to explore Koh Kum, Koh Kangcow, and Koh Yipun. All of which are part of Lam Son National Park.

This island excursion was absolutely dreamy, and a great precursor for my visit to Krabi. Each island is unique from the powdery white sand beaches of Koh Kangcow to the black sand beach of Koh Chang. You will not be without the most coveted and incredibly beautiful Instagram photos.

We enjoyed a picturesque picnic lunch on Koh Phayam which was right out of a Bond movie with narrow fine white sand beaches and perfectly warm water for swimming on all sides.

Ranong Thailand is a small town with influences from the unique places that surround it, it is best to avoid the rainy season when visiting if possible, and expect a quiet visit with few tourists and many authentic experiences.

Bangkok to Chumphon

Flying into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport is easy from any direction (search flights here). I flew from Paris to Bangkok where I spent one night exploring the city and resting before gathering myself to visit Southern Thailand for the week.

Thirty-five miles from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport is the city’s second airport, Don Muang. Nok Air flies from Bangkok to Chumphon leaving from Don Muang. The Bangkok to Chumphon flight is only a is a short one-hour hop, a much more comfortable option than the Bangkok to Chumphon train which can take anywhere from 6.5 to 9.5 hours. 

Once you arrive in the capital of Chumphon, it is easy to explore as many destinations as you like in this part of the country, and even nearby islands. Following my visit to Chumphon, I went on to explore Krabi and Phuket, flying from Phuket to Bangkok. Air Asia has regular flights returning from Chumphon to Bangkok or from Krabi to Bangkok.

Things to do in Chumphon

It seemed fitting to begin our week-long tour of Southern Thailand in Chumphon as it means “Lots of Blessings”. As the name suggests, it is abundant with treasures to explore. An off-the-beaten track Thailand tourist destination there are so many unique things to do in Chumphon. It is also the gateway to the other provinces of Thailand with easy access to the south and beyond.

Nong Yai Tang Chang Public Park

Our first stop was Nong Yai Tang Chang Park, that has a beautiful intention and mission. The park exists because of King Rama IX’s initiative to create a reservoir to prevent flooding in the region. The decision was made following the devastation caused by a typhoon in 1989 which destroyed 7,130 km² of farm land and tragically led to the deaths of 529 people, displacing 160,000 others. 

A system of flood control measures were implemented as a result. This story is shared using a stone carved storyboard in the park. The sentiment is also reflected in the beauty of the park. A highlight of the park visit is the Nong Yai Wooden Bridge which is a one kilometre long footbridge that spans a waterway. The bridge carries you to an island where you can even stay overnight.

Baan Tong Tom Yai

From there, we made our way to the fisherman village of Baan Tong Tom Yai which is also known as “Seahorse Village”. This village was awarded a national award of community collaboration in marine conservation. It offers a very traditional homestay experience where travellers can stay for a couple of nights with the family.

The lunch I enjoyed here was one of my very favourites of the trip. We ate family style, traditional Thai dishes, on the wooden planked deck floor floating above the nearly clear water with seahorses floating below and all around us.

Visitors who visit or stay here can enjoy fishing with the locals, snorkeling and other water activities, scuba, marine preservation activities and helping to prepare the traditional daily meals. It is no doubt that you will meet Gai, the owner who left his secure corporate job many years ago to follow his passion for creating and maintaining this homestay. This authentic experience was a highlight of visiting this area of Thailand.

Sairee Beach

Twelve kilometres southeast from the Chumphon city centre you can find yourself at Sairee Beach. You’ll find white sandy shores and crystal blue water warm enough to dip a toe into. We visited this beach, home to a monument of Krom Luang Chumphon, the Prince of Chumphon who established the Navy of Thailand. He passed away in 1923 but still commands a deep respect from the Thais, both local and visiting to pay respects – affectionately known as the “Father of the Navy”.

From the beach, climb a set of steps to a temple. It is here that you can enjoy a 360-degree scenic view point overlooking Chumphon city and the coast. Be prepared to hear fireworks in a nearby building, visitors buy packages of fireworks and set them off in a contained building as a tribute to the Prince.

Tham Singh Village

Our last stop in Chumphon was a visit to the Tham Singh Village. For more than ten years the villagers have gathered together to set up a group of coffee houses that have produced over fifty tons of coffee per month, showcasing the best quality coffee in the area. We sampled a variety of coffee from these beans. We were also greeted by a local farmer selling durian from the back of his truck which was an unexpected treat.

Chumphon Night Market

The night market in Chumphon is a delight for all five senses where you can find a variety of street food delicacies. Enjoy their famous Pad Thai before shopping for various local crafts, home goods and other textiles. Situated along the Komluang Chumphon Road near the Chumphon Railway Station, this market is one of the most popular things to do in Chumphon.

Wat Phra Yai

Not on our list this time but noteworthy for visiting if you are in the area is a climb up to Wat Phra Yai. Located in the Wisai Nua sub-district of Chumphon about twenty kilometres from the city centre, this little temple has a giant golden Buddha statue overlooking Highway 41, also referred to as Wat Khao Chedi and Wat Tuprasong.

A stop to see the golden wonder of Wat Pa Yang, a stunning temple in Saphli Village is also a must. The buildings, statues and temple complex are covered in gold which will make for an incredible photo for your Instagram gallery.

Island Hopping from Chumphon

Day trips can easily include island hopping to those close-by which include Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan. Koh Tao is popular island destination to add on to your Southern Thailand itinerary. Travelling from Chumphon to Koh Tao is simple and takes a few hours, depending on how you choose to travel. The Chumphon to Koh Tao ferry is a popular and scenic option. 

Smaller islands nearby include Koh Smet, Koh Tiap, Koh Kai, Koh Ngam Noi, Koh Ngam Yai and others. These islands offer a much quieter experience to the other bigger islands like Phuket and Samui with similar water sport activities and local adventure activities.  The beaches are pristine and the water is a unique Thai blue not found in many other places in the world.

We travelled on from Chumphon to Krabi. The trip takes anywhere from 5 in a private taxi to 6.5 hours in a van.

There are also flights with Nok Air from Chumphon to Bangkok and then Bangkok to Krabi.

Sheraton Maldives Renovation

The Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa isn’t a brand-new hotel. It’s one of the more established hotels in the Maldives. However, after its recent $US20 million facelift, it certainly feels that way. The private island resort features 176 guest rooms ranging from beach cottages to the iconic Sheraton Maldives water bungalows.

Sheraton Maldives Island Cottage 

Arriving early evening, we took our first stroll along the beach as the sun was setting. The sound came only from the waves gently lapping at the bottom of two slender wiggling tree trunks that emerged from the water, between which a single hammock had been strung. But that was it. No other people. No other sounds. We stood with our feet in the water, watching the sky turn to gold, then red and slowly it darkened to the deepest blue. The sand was soft and white with grains so fine that even the geologist I had with me can’t help but marvel at it.

Tearing ourselves away from the sky, dotted with more constellations than I knew existed, we headed to the Island Cottage that was to be our home. The spacious ground-floor lodge had a peaked thatched roof, super king-sized bed and private plunge pool, and sat in a secluded spot amongst the greenery, barely a minute’s walk from the beach.

My favourite part, though, was the bathroom. Inside, yet outside, with a roof covering one half (toilet, basin and bath), an open-air shower and an abundance of lush foliage, it was spectacular come nightfall as the pebble-topped floor spotlights set a romantic ambience and the stars glinted down from above.

Sheraton Maldives Water Bungalow

When we moved to the water bungalow two nights later, it got even better. The villa was beautiful: decorated in chic neutral hues with all the tucked-away mod cons, a supremely comfortable bed and plenty of space. It, too, had a private pool, only this time it was raised above the ocean overlooking nothing but the waves.

Ensuring you’re never more than a glance away from a photo-worthy panorama, the villa’s bathroom was even more impressive than the last; complete with a huge picture window that showcased the oceanic view in all its glory. I can confirm this is best enjoyed with champagne in hand while soaking in a bath enriched with complimentary bath salts. I give you permission to hate me a little bit.

Over the following days, we spend many an afternoon alternating between plunge pool dips, ocean swims and lazing on the daybed on the water bungalow’s deck gazing out to sea.

Sheraton Maldives Restaurants

The Sheraton has already ticked the boxes for views and accommodation. So, let’s talk about the food. There are seven dining destinations at this all-inclusive Maldives resort. Five restaurants and two all-day snack spots.

Our first evening took us to Anchorage Beach. Tables were set up on the sand in front of a huge array of what they called the ‘fish market buffet’, to which we were encouraged to help ourselves. We didn’t need to be told twice.

It was an exotic array of tantalising seafood; from whole grilled fish to melt-in-the-mouth sashimi, seafood salads, fish steaks and Maldivian specialities made (and served) by chefs from neighbouring islands. With the meal lit only by candlelight and live music from a Maldivian women’s drumming group, it made for a wonderful first night and set our standards high for what else was to come.

The next few days saw us enjoying meals at Baan Thai, the only indoor restaurant, where you can indulge in usual Thai classics plus lots you’ve never heard of. Then at Sand Coast, a spot surrounded by palm trees serving an eclectic list of Asian curries.

We also raved about T-For-Tea House. Living in Asia for a number of years has made us sceptical about Chinese restaurants where the fare might not be up to scratch, but the chefs here knew exactly what they were doing with their mix of Cantonese dim sum, Sichuan noodle soups and Mandarin dishes.

Sea Salt Restaurant

For our final evening, we opted for Sea Salt. A handful of tables are perched on a raised pontoon above the water, and a warm sourdough loaf is soon brought to the table with four types of sea salt – hence the restaurant’s name. The waiter demonstrated how to mix the salts with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, then dip the warm bread into it. The result was salty, bready heaven.

I would have happily eaten only this for years to come, but I obligingly order the red snapper, which can be in four styles: Vietnamese, Chinese, Maldivian or Mediterranean. I selected the latter and it arrived filleted for ease of eating but still served whole (aesthetics are everything, after all) with a zesty lemon flavour, and topped with tomatoes and olives. My dining partner chose the steak and barely uttered a word the whole time he ate it; so incredible was its flavour, and we both sat in satiated bliss for some time after.

Undoubtedly, our favourite meal at the Sheraton however, had to be the Lagoon Lunch. This five-course addition is well worth forking out for as it was one of the most memorable two hours we’ve ever spent.

Picture a lone table set in water that’s crystal clear. No-one else is around, the table is topped with flowers and there’s a bottle of champagne on ice. Your waiter beckons you out to the table that’s being circled by small reef sharks. With a smile, he explains that they’re friendly.

Before pouring the champagne, he hands you both a cocktail and leaves you to marvel at your present moment for a few minutes before reappearing with an avocado and smoked salmon appetiser. Your taste buds are soon treated to a prawn, halloumi and garlic starter on a bed of watermelon, then a main course of tuna steak with coconut rice and salad. A mango sorbet comes next, and finally a delicate lime millefeuille for dessert. Halfway through the meal (and halfway through the champagne), we learn it was our waiter Patu’s first day.

His was the ideal level of attentiveness. He was there when we needed him and not pushy when we didn’t. All in all, the combination of service, food and setting made it the epitome of dining perfection.

Sheraton Maldives Activities

You’d be forgiven for thinking that all we did was eat during our stay. But, I promise we also took advantage of the many Sheraton Maldives activities on offer.

One pastime that we couldn’t help but indulge in is wildlife-watching. Lizards and birds meander past every now and then, and come dusk, the sky comes alive with fruit bats flitting in and out of the trees. Climbing down a few steps from your villa deck into the sea affords the chance to snorkel with rays and brightly-coloured fish bobbing between the coral, and you never know when a quick glance might reveal a flying fish leaping through the air. If you opt for the Lagoon Lunch (and you should) expect to have those friendly reef sharks for company as they circle your table waiting for any crumbs you let fall escape from your plate. 

Another must-do is a snorkelling excursion. Ours took us to a nearby sandbank via speedboat. Of the many sandbanks in the area, this is the only one that doesn’t disappear with the tides, and if you’re lucky you might even have it to yourself. Your guide will happily snap underwater photos of the fish, coral and you looking fetching in your goggles so you have some physical memories to take home, and also brings along a beach picnic for when you’ve had your fill of snorkelling. As lovely as this afternoon was, I’ll admit the evidence of coral bleaching and washed-up plastic on the bank was saddening to say the least.

Later that evening, we took to the water again for a sunset cruise. The staff know where the wild dolphins are likely to be and are skilled at spotting them from a distance. With the sun glowing fluorescent orange as it dips toward the horizon, and the dolphins keeping us mesmerised as they leap and jump alongside the boat, this two-hour trip was truly incredible.

If I had to identify a single take-home thought during my Sheraton Maldives review stay, it would be about colour. The colour was something I thought a lot about during our trip, as it turns out that ‘blue’ is the least descriptive word in the English language.

It cannot convey the sparkling azure of the sunlight bouncing off the waves, nor does it conjure the rainbow of tones in this one colour that you can gaze upon in a single moment; from directly above your head to swimming around your toes.

There are more shades of turquoise and aquamarine than I knew possible, and to see them all glittering and glinting at you from across the Indian Ocean, tempting you into the water and making you revel in just how grateful you are to be taking all this in, is truly something to behold.

A beautiful oasis on the edge of Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert, Palm Springs is making a very cool comeback. New hotels and familiar properties with face lifted facades, farm-to-table restaurants, vintage boutiques and the revitalisation of the downtown scene has sparked a resurgence of visitors, putting Palm Springs firmly back on the map. With a strong focus on wellness, it is also on the rise as a go-to destination for a healthy weekend getaway for the LA and San Diego set.

How to Get to Palm Springs

Getting to Palm Springs is easy from any direction. Palm Springs International Airport is the closest airport to Palm Springs (downtown). But, flying into Los Angeles and driving from LA to Palm Springs (just under 2 hours) or even taking a road trip from San Francisco to Palm Springs (7.5 hours) are fun options too. It is easy to navigate to Palm Springs. Hire a car (search car rental deals) if you are planning to adventure beyond the city limits.

On the list of things I love about Palm Springs is how devoted the locals are to maintaining the culture and iconic identity of this desert oasis. Gary and Kathleen Friedle are a perfect example of that. They have lovingly restored The Monkey Tree Hotel which was originally designed in 1960 by Albert Frey. 

This 16-room boutique hotel, with an incredible list of famous guests such as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder, Eric Clapton, the Beatles (except for Paul), Bob Hope, Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, and even a JFK and Marilyn Monroe rendezvous (guarded at the private entrance of their suite by the secret service), is quintessential Palm Springs.

The Friedle’s re-opened the vintage boutique hotel in 2016 and they can be found on property daily. Kathleen has made it her passion project to source authentic furnishings for the entire mid-century modern design property which are eclectic and on-period right down to every detail. Gary spends every morning in the properties commercial kitchen creating a special day-of breakfast for guests. I was asked when I made my reservation if I had any food allergies or restrictions and Gary created special vegetarian options for me based on my response. Breakfast is served daily in the community room and is self-serve, it is a great way to meet other guests and feel at-home instantly.  I quickly became addicted to Gary’s pastries and I even enjoyed taking my breakfast back to my room one of the days I stayed and guests can also enjoy breakfast by the pool.

It is obvious as soon as you pull up to the façade and walk into the open-air communal courtyard of this vintage property that you have stepped back in time and that you are walking into a postcard.  Every bit of this dream property is well maintained and perfectly pristine, the thoughtfully designed rooms open up to this common space with the pièce de résistance pool in the center. Fluffy top palm trees guide your eyes up and out of the courtyard where you can follow the edge of the San Jacinto Mountains on the horizon which provide the most incredible backdrop for this property. 

I was told that Mr. Frey took the mountain range into account when originally designing the layout of the hotel by creating the dramatic slanting roof lines to be in harmony with the mountains. He tracked the sun during the day to determine the best site placement for the property and situated the courtyard to maximise the views of this inspiring backdrop while sitting by the pool. This thoughtfulness is obvious when you are standing in the heart of the common area during your stay, the reward is a golden pink sunrise over the mountains in the morning, soft toned sunsets at the end of each day and an umbrella of stars over the courtyard each night.

In addition to the daily house made breakfast, The Monkey Tree Hotel offers resort-like amenities to guests. You can enjoy complimentary soft drinks and snacks during the day while you dip in the heated salt water swimming pool or swim laps in the tether exercise lap pool, along with happy hour drinks and even a Scandinavian Spa with whirlpool, sauna and cold plunge pool. Massages, gym passes, meal delivery and even a butler service can be scheduled with the front desk as the property has cultivated many relationships with other local businesses to make adding these experiences to your stay easy.

Choose from the Standard or Deluxe King or Queen Rooms or splurge and stay in the Presidential Suite or Jungle Room. I loved my stay in the Jungle Room, 465 square feet of jungle-inspired vintage décor right down to the leopard print walls, pillows and carpet. I was happily lost in the California king-size bed and found the extra seating area and private courtyard with lounging to be a dream too. But, my very favourite part of this room, and perhaps Eric Clapton’s too because this room was his preferred, was the light-filled, original bathroom with walk-in shower and floor to ceiling glass windows.

For a luxurious getaway in the desert you can’t go past Parker Palm Springs. This immaculate five-star property invites you into the world of Jonathan Adler and you cannot help but feel like a fashionable accessory to the picture perfect pages of his expression of this decadent home away from home. 

The first page is a welcome into the main space with lobby and cozy common areas that include Mr. Parker, one of the best reservations in Palm Springs, Norma’s the perfect spot for breakfast and lunch, an intimate lobby “mini bar” and a handful of perfectly decorated seating areas that will have you coveting every bit of hand-picked vintage and repurposed décor.

Wander the grounds with a whimsical feeling as they invite you to get lost in the tall grass and lush greenery that surrounds pathways leading to secret areas gifting you hammocks and fountains and art around every corner. You can even find a game of Pétanque here and if tennis is your game of choice you’ll be happy to learn that there is a tennis court on the property. Make your way to the three pools during your stay, but be sure to find the Gene Autry Pool where you will find a lemonade bar and larger than life chess board, it is one of the best spots to relax in all of Palm Springs.

The rooms, villas and suites, each with their own name and personality are decadence personified.  Adler has treated the entire property as if it were his own home, a passion project, and you feel this passion and attention-to-detail in every bit of space you experience during your stay.  No two rooms are alike.

La Quinta is designed to provide guests with a full experience and very little need to leave the property. In addition to the abundance of golf, the property offers seven unique dining options ranging from comfort food, course and court side fare to casual and fine dining options. Each experience is unique with a property backdrop to match and I always love the variety when I stay on or visit this property. 

Voted one of the top tennis resorts in the world, you can enjoy tennis and pickleball at La Quinta.  The resort has been host to Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova to name a few famed players, and you can enjoy a full game on your own or tennis lessons led by a team of certified instructors. Daily yoga is taught on property as well, I’ve enjoyed group classes and privates in my room during my stays.

Indulge in the on site spa with a full menu of body treatments, skin care and wellness rituals such as the Glistening Agave Body Glaze or a massage menu inspired by various places in the world including a traditional Thai Massage or Hawaiian Lomi Lomi. The spa also includes a full service salon which includes nail and hair care as well as makeup.

What to Do in Palm Springs

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

I’ve been to Palm Springs more times than I can count but I had never visited the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway before this trip, and I cannot believe what I was missing. Not only is the ride up the tramway incredible and unique, but the hiking at the top is worth a day trip. This tramcar is the world’s largest, and it provides each rider breathtaking panoramic views as it rotates the full ten minutes while climbing 2,643 feet above the desert valley. Guests stand along the perimeter of the tramcar while peering out. If you get a little motion sick, you can take a padded seat in the middle which I did on the way down.

The Mountain Station lives at 8,516 feet and is open every day for visitors. The view from this station is incredible and the temperatures are at least 30-40 degrees cooler than below so this is a great spot for a desert reprieve.

Hiking in Palm Springs

There are over 50 miles (80 kms) of hiking trails from the Mountain Station location, with plenty of local guides that can lead you if you are feeling ambitious after your trip up the tramway with many other trails in the area too. Simply organise a guide or self-guided maps through your hotel.

Take a Stargazing Jeep Tour

Undeniably the very best part about a desert visit are the sunrises and sunsets, there are few things more beautiful than a Palm Springs sunset. I highly recommend the Red Jeep San Andreas Fault Night Watch and Stargazing Jeep Tour to take full advantage of a desert sunset while you are visiting Palm Springs.  Witness the transition from day to night by 4WD adventure that ends with incredible stargazing. 

Our Jeep ride meandered along the Palm Oasis of the San Andreas Fault Zone where we explored, with our highly informative local guide, spectacular box and slot canyons, ancient fossil beds and a labyrinth of geological cuts and canyons of this area.  We traveled to a private 800+ acre preserve on the Fault where we gazed at stars and planets led by a local expert who shared his knowledge and telescope with us.  We each took turns peering into the telescope and witnessing far away moons and planets – this was a highlight of the visit for me.

Enjoy a Spa Day in Palm Springs

I enjoyed a day at the Elements Spa at Hilton Palm Springs my last day in the desert. This spa, open to the public, has a menu of treatments and splurges so indulgent you will have a hard time deciding. The nine unique treatment rooms invite guests to explore each of the elements and tease your senses with a full mind, body and spirit experience. I enjoyed a hot soak to start and a full body scrub and massage which was a divine grand finale for my week in Palm Springs. Don’t miss the eucalyptus infused steam room and the Swiss shower.

Healthy Restaurants in Palm Springs

Watercress Vietnamese Bistro

With a focus on healthy food choices, I made sure to try a few new places this trip. I enjoyed a beautiful dinner at Watercress Vietnamese Bistro, where I feasted on vegetarian dishes that were delicious and the perfect fresh, and healthy option for the desert heat. The Summer Rolls were not only yummy, but beautiful and I highly recommend the Shredded Cabbage Salad. Don’t let the heat deter you from sitting outside on the patio, there was a cool breeze the night I visited and it was nice to be in the fresh air people watching during dinner.

Kreem

Run, don’t walk to Kreem in Palm Springs, an artisanal ice cream and coffee café. This vegan friendly shop offers many coconut based ice creams and all natural seasonal sorbets, they also make their own almond milk. Rosemary, Lemon Poppyseed, Honey Soaked Cherries, and Basil Lavender to name a few.  Stay in or dare the outside temps which will challenge you to eat it as fast as you can before it melts.

Cheeky’s

No visit to Palm Springs in complete without breakfast at Cheeky’s Palm Springs, it is by far the most popular breakfast and lunch spot in the desert. I always enjoy a table outside and feast on the farm to table comfort food. Beware, the portions are large enough to share unless you are brunching and rolling two meals into one. Cheeky’s is perfectly situated downtown for a nice walk in any direction to enjoy window shopping or a pop in to the art museum.

How to Stay Active in Palm Springs

Cycle Through the San Andreas Fault Zone

With the flat forever roads and vast space for activities there is plenty to do to stay active in Palm Springs. One of the best outdoor activities I did on this trip was The Earthquake Canyon Express Bicycle Tour with Big Wheel Tours, a 4-hour geologic adventure that includes a 20-mile bike ride that descends through the heart of the San Andreas Fault zone on a paved road to the heart of grape country near Mecca. The route is straight-forward and quiet with very little traffic and makes for an easy pedal and a beautiful day of exploring by bike.

The route takes riders from the transition zone between the Colorado and Mojave Desert, it winds its way through the narrow canyon walls of Box Canyon and finishes with spectacular views of the Salton Sea, Mt. San Jacinto, the All-American Canal, and the agriculture of the eastern Coachella Valley.  We literally rode from dry desert canyons through lush green farm oasis’ and crops ranging from citrus to table grapes, finishing our ride with a visit to the Oasis Date Gardens for a date shake and date tasting. The date shake was another first for me and I could not believe how delicious it was; it was the absolute perfect reward for an adventurous day on the bike.

Horseback Riding through Indian Canyons

I traded in my bike for a horse for another beautiful, authentic desert activity. This perfect early morning activity, was a visit to Smoke Tree Stables for a horseback ride through Indian Canyons.  The stables trailer the horses into beautiful Indian Canyons and riders jump on for a 2-hour scenic ride along streams, rocky mountain trails and among native palms.  The trail is an out-and-back adventure following a guide from Andreas Canyon to Murray and back.  Our guide, a true cowboy, was the perfect gentleman and shared lots of insight about desert flora and the sacred land that we were riding on.  Not only was it incredible exploring the trails by horse, but the panoramic views of the valley and beyond were breathtaking in all directions, the key is to get out early to avoid the heat.

I will always love Palm Springs for the relaxing getaway that it is, with its chill desert vibe that invites pause, but I also love that you can find big adventure here too. I loved trying new things this visit, and learning that happy, healthy options are possible. These adventures made the relaxing time even more delicious.

Getting to Bali

I arrived easily by plane from Bangkok where I was finishing a trip in Thailand. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is easily accessible and central to heading in all directions on the island of Bali.  You can easily taxi to Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud from here and I relied on taxis and personal drivers for my entire visit.

Bicycles, fast boats and mopeds are the main modes of transportation on Bali, I found it very easy to transfer from place to place and my only caution is to allow extra time for traffic and temple ceremonies which happen often an unexpected and cause delays and complete stand-stills.

You will receive a Visa on Arrival (VoA) when you arrive and you do not need an additional visa if you are visiting less than 30 days (check your own country’s requirements before leaving home).

The magic of my visit began with my arrival at Fivelements just south of Ubud, and it was the perfect welcome. This award-winning luxury resort is nestled on the banks of the Ayung River which provided the perfect backdrop for the theme of water which was prevalent throughout my entire visit to Bali, and an essential element of Bali and its culture.

Not only one of the best luxury hotels in Bali, Fivelements is a retreat-style sanctuary too, focused on Balinese healing, living foods and sacred arts, it is intimate and intentional. My two-day stay here was pure medicine in every way, with the invitation to “live well,” I was given authentic opportunities to attune my mind, body and spirit to the natural surroundings and breathe deeply and find peace.

I was led to my suite by a grass and stone path that meandered through the property and past the Sakit Dining Room, an open-air room with a river view, the Mandala Meeting Room and Sacred Spaces where both private and group events are hosted, and it was a pleasant surprise to hear the faint sounds of chimes along the walk coming from the property-wide music system which carried me straight to my suite, and into it even, as I was welcomed with the sound of soothing traditional healing music.

There are nine exclusive suites on this property, each designed with inspiration from a sacred spiral which gives the space an open-air feeling. The décor of each suite and the property throughout includes Balinese “Songket” textiles and antiques which give it an authentic and old-world, traditional feeling. I felt at home instantly here.

Each suite contains a king-size bed which is positioned in the centre of the room and facing the river. The room opens in two directions; from the foot of the bed it opens out onto a private terrace overlooking the sacred Ayung River with a seating area and covered riverstone healing bathtub where I enjoyed a Sakti bath which included lemongrass, Balinese orange, lime, pandan leaves, ginger and Sakti bath oil with the sound and view of the river from where I was soaking. The sliding doors on the opposite side of the room open up to an alfresco bathroom including chromotherapy lighting, and a stone path rain shower.

Every detail of my stay was intentional, every staff member welcomed me with a loving bow and a hello and I was carefully looked after from the moment I arrived until my departure. The Core Values and Guiding Philosophies of this property are aligned with Balinese culture and the aim is to create a space and invitations for guests to transform their lives and live with more love. It was easy to be here with my heart wide open and in receiving mode.

I experienced my very first Melukat at Fivelements, a traditional Balinese water blessing and purification ceremony. The private ceremony took place in the Sacred Space and included a meditation with the temple priest. He prepared the holy water in a clay vase with flowers and incense and chanted mantras in Sanskrit. This was deeply emotional for me as I chant in my daily meditation and Bhakti practice and I felt very much like this was a homecoming. The “holy shower” was a beautiful experience that I highly recommend, and it was the perfect welcome to my two weeks in Bali.

The Healing Village features eight private riverside healing rooms where the treatments take place, each one designed with an open-air river view that welcomed a perfect breeze along with private bathrooms and stone healing bathtubs. These sanctuaries are so quiet and so peaceful it is hard to leave.

The Watsu therapy pool, along with a large lap pool for relaxing and cooling off is located in the centre of the property. Both have massage jets, underwater music, and chromotherapy lighting; the decking surrounding the pools provides dappled shade for napping and the sound of the rushing river as a soothing backdrop.

The Bidadari Beauty Sanctuary and Boutique are available if you feel like splurging on any Balinese-inspired beauty and rejuvenation treatments for your body, face, nails and hair or souvenirs of your time spent here such as healing crystals, mala beads for japa, essential oils, etc.

I loved the Sakti Dining Room and the beautiful meals that I enjoyed there. The fine-dining atmosphere and healing cuisine described as “Living Foods” by the chef; comprising raw vegan options and other lightly prepared plant-based dishes. The dinner reservations are made and set each morning and the menu is prepared daily. I enjoyed a set five-course meal that was both healthy and delicious for dinner both nights, and the breakfasts were full of brightly coloured fruits and bowls filled with organic goodness. The menu and concept of Fivelements supports local farmers, sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly products.

The property is private and secluded and tucked away in a small village that is a beautiful place to wander about if you are feeling like you want to explore. I walked to a nearby temple complex and just beyond it to some rice fields. You can easily arrange a taxi for exploring beyond a short walk but I found myself happily content with all that the property had to offer and invitations to push pause with plenty of tranquil areas to do this.

Desa Visesa

Desa Visesa is located in Ubud, within short resort shuttle to many activities and shopping, this luxury resort property prides itself on honouring the past traditions of Balinese culture while adding modern luxury and plenty of healing, cultural and luxury experiences to invite guests to appreciate the essence of a Balinese village and daily life on the island.

I received my second Tri Datu bracelet as part of the welcome ceremony and blessing when I checked in to Desa Visesa. This gift was accompanied by a traditional Balinese rice blessing and an offering of the welcome drink while I waiting to be escorted to my villa. It was a lovely way to be welcomed to the resort and indicative of how I was treated the entire time.

The suites and villas that make up the property are intimate sanctuaries and mine was so generous and abundant that I did not want to leave. My One Bedroom Pool Villa is one of 35 units and is 124 square metres of space that includes a private floating walkway entrance, outdoor lounge area with stocked mini bar, private dipping pool with fountain, an enclosed bedroom with air conditioning and a canopy king-size bed, and a beautiful open-air bathroom with shower and deep soaking tub.

I love that the villas and suites at Desa Visesa are designed into the natural landscape of Ubud, my villa was located beside the property’s temple and with a field of rice flanking it which created incredible privacy and the most lush and beautiful views. I enjoyed breakfast and lunch by the pool, and a traditional flower bath in the bathtub during my stay, the space was luxurious and each guest is provided with their very own 24-hour butler room service.

There is plenty to do at Desa Viseas, the property has designed experiences of all kinds that invite guests to participate in traditional Balinese culture, as well as five-star luxury experiences on the property that take advantage of the land and a staff of local experts. Everything from making offerings to cow bathing as well as farming and permaculture activities with plenty of things to do for children of all ages too. Guests can find the daily schedule in their rooms and on a board in the lobby, and many activities are included in the stay. Additional luxury experiences including a private picnic in the rice fields on property which I enjoyed, village cycling and yoga as well as making gebogan and learning Balinese dancing can be booked when you arrive.

Property shuttles leave on the half-hour from the lobby and take guests into downtown Ubud for shopping and exploring which I did both days that I stayed at Desa Viseas. I highly recommend visiting the various markets in town where you can purchase beautiful handmade bags, and other local textiles.

One of the highlights of my stay was an incredibly delicious five-course vegetarian meal at one of the property’s four restaurants. I was led down the candlelight path from the lobby into the courtyard and grand entrance of the Padi Fine Dining experience where I was greeted with my very own mixologist who mixed a welcome table-side cocktail for me. Every course was served with care and meticulous detail. The food was tremendously delicious and innovative, fresh and organic flavours, fully vegetarian and plated with artistic perfection.

A caviar of legumes, salt and sugar-crusted beets, hand-pulled cheese burrata, pickled green asparagus, wild grilled taro roots, smoked aubergine and the list went on and on. This meal was not only the highlight of my stay at Desa Visesa, but it was also one of the most beautiful meals of my life. I watch the Chef and his team in the open kitchen as they created each dish, and I was pampered with wine paired perfectly with each course. The final course, a chocolate dessert was served with pretty candies in a box for me to take with me to my room.

There is plenty to explore on the property of Desa Visesa as well. The main pool just beyond the lobby is a beautiful hideaway spot with dappled light and loungers for resting, lounging and napping even. A raised garden with paths and a large stone Buddha can be found just above the pool area, you can wander into the rice fields and along paths leading to the spa and pavilions where events take place, you can even take bicycles or a staff-driven cart around to explore.

Every morning just outside my villa door in a nook to the right of my door I found incense burning and a small offering tucked inside, the nightly turn-down service left my room with the curtains drawn and slippers waiting for me to slip into. It was so hard to leave this property after a few days feeling right at home here.

During my stay at Desa Visesa I hired a local guide to drive me to the Bali Swing, the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and the Tirta Empul Temple. I participated in a purification ceremony at the most famous temple in Bali with many other visitors and stood in awe of the rice terraces which took my breath away.

Where to Stay in Canggu

Tugu Hotel Canggu

I arrived at Tugu Hotel Canggu delighted to find this hideaway property located in the middle of the vibrant beach village. “Tugu” means monument in the Indonesian language. There are three Tugu Hotels in Indonesia, founded by Anhar Setjadibrata who is the owner of the biggest collection of fine Indonesian art and cultural antiquities in Indonesia. He designed the boutique hotels to house his collection and to share it with the world, and being surrounded by this collection is one of many things that makes a stay at Tugu Hotel extra special.

This Tugu Hotel property is located in Canggu, just a short walk to Canggu Beach. It is on the southwest coast of Bali, 30 minutes from the Ngurah Rai International Airport and 15 minutes from Seminyak. There is a lot to explore in every direction from this property, and the vibration here was very different from Fivelements. The property is expansive but maintains an intimate feeling with secret pathways, gardens, ponds, bridges and water features along with the main pool with a wall of sculptural fountains pouring into it. There are plenty of places to find solace and many invitations to be social as well.

Nothing could prepare me for the indulgence I found when I opened the large antique doors into my own private courtyard, tropical gardens with coy pond, suite and private splash pool. The Dedari Suite was decadent in every way. The main suite with canopy king-size bed, seating areas, desk, TV and wardrobes provided ample space for me. The splash pool just beyond the suite area was my favourite for lounging on the hanging day bed, the one in-room breakfast I enjoyed and private skinny dipping in the late afternoon and evenings.

But, it was the bathroom that had me squealing. The private spa area showcased a unique sunken bath in an open-air room with antique doors that opened out into the coy pond and private courtyard. I could see the coy happily splashing about during each shower and bath and I enjoyed a really incredible traditional Balinese flower bath one afternoon by candlelight. The hand-painted terra-cotta tiles juxtaposed with the antique wooden patina of the little doors that opened beyond the bathtub made the space charming and cozy.

There are three restaurants on the property which makes leaving a hard option. Tugu Bali Restaurant located in the open-air hall of Wantilan Agung which is majestic in its own right and full of enchanting nooks and crannies to find a cozy, romantic spot for two or to enjoy the best spot in Canggu to watch the sunset from the rooftop terrace. The menu includes an eclectic selection of fresh seafood and a mix of gourmet continental cuisine with a blend of Asian and Indonesian influences. I enjoyed a sunset aperitif with sushi one night and it was perfect. The Ji Terrace by the Sea is a whimsical and cozy spot for a really beautiful experience of the playful blending of Indonesia, Japan, India and Thailand. The menu is inspired by Japanese and Asian dishes and the Pad Thai was my very favourite. This space is transformed at sunset with a DJ, locals and visitors who enjoy the ambience well into the evening. The third dining option is Ji at Bale Sutra, this exquisite experience takes place in an ornate and elegant dark wooden temple, originally a family temple that was used for generations and found by the owner of Tugu. The temple dining room is lavish and oozing with red walls and large prints and antiques that spill out in every direction. The menu is inspired by centuries-old cooking traditions from Japan, as well as other East Asian countries.

In addition to the formal dining options, guests can order meals on the lawn and beside the pool and every afternoon guests can participate in high tea in the bar just off the lobby.

I enjoyed one of the best massages of my life at Tugu Hotel. I received a Chakra Opening Massage with Healing Mantra, it was a beautiful blend of medicine and healing and I will never forget it. The healer heated soothing herbal oils and applied them to my body while chanting mantras, I was also given a rice blessing and water purification ceremony. The authenticity of the experience moved me, the healer was so loving and beautiful and I left feeling so full of love.

Where to Stay in Seminyak

The Amala

The Amala, was the first of two Lifestyle Retreats sister hotels I would enjoy. The Amala, a five-star luxury resort, is tucked away in the heart of Seminyak; and while it is literally in the centre of big activity in Seminyak, as soon as you arrive you are welcomed into a calm and pace that the space dictates and that pace is very slow.

Bamboo walls and floating stone pathways lead you from the busy outside world into the tranquility of The Amala, passing various property temples, shrines and spirit houses which are adorned with devotion several times a day.  Beyond the open-air lobby you wander into a series of open spaces: the six table dining room which is the heart of the property, a beautiful lap pool joined by a bamboo footbridge, and open air kitchen and lounge area where Balinese Cooking Classes are hosted, and the intimate Pool Villas just beyond this. The guest library is a closed room with air conditioning and fast WiFi, and just off the pool with a glimpse of it from where you can read and work. There are plenty of cozy places to lounge by the public pool, and the dining room is flanked on all sides with private spa rooms and an open-air spa lobby.

Beautiful food is served at The Amala; the Bamboo Restaurant continues the theme of “health-through-harmony” specializing in organic, raw foods which echo the property’s holistic wellness approach. It was easy to be a vegetarian at The Amala, everything was fresh and delicious.

My Spa Villa was a grand, indulgent space of 120sqm with a private pool and open-air bathtub courtyard. The kitchen and dining areas were perfect for in-room dining.

I enjoyed a traditional Balinese Flower Bath upon my arrival and rinsed off in the rain shower complete with spa-like steam and beautiful herbal aromatherapy sacks for extra effect. Choose between the wild herbs, green tea or spiced citrus. The plunge jet-pool was the perfect temperature for cooling off and so private I barely wore a swimsuit, perfectly situated under a shade tree that created the most amazing dappled light and cool shade during the day.

A glass-like house just beyond the courtyard opened up to my suite which included a generous canopy king-size bed, seating areas and bathroom. The room, transformed each night with turn down, is surrounded by velvety floor-to-ceiling curtains that create a cocoon-like feeling, perfect for a deep sleep.

It was easy to find plenty of things to do both on and off property at The Amala, I enjoyed a beautiful Balinese Massage in the spa with traditional foot bath one day and wandered into town by property driver for coffee and shopping on the second day. There is plenty to do nearby and plenty of reasons to stay put and leave your To Do List for another day. This property was so peaceful and so intimate.

Where to Stay in Sanur

The Samata

I arrived at The Samata completely blissed out, and the luxury continued with this second Lifestyle Retreats property. Like Amala this villa resort is intimate with unique rooms and villas and incredible common areas. “Samata” is a Sanskrit word meaning the state of equilibrium between body, mind and spirit. The property is small which means you feel the extra attention from the staff and the community and there are invitations to find balance everywhere.

Located in Sanur, this property is a short distance from many temples, shops and cafes, day trips and adventures. I took a special trip with the property healer to a nearby local temple for a traditional Balinese Purification Ceremony. Otherwise, I found myself completely content with a private Balinese Cooking Class and plenty of one-on-one instruction from the chef, and a traditional palm reading and numerology report.

My 75sqm Ocean View Suite was absolutely perfect. Located on the top floor facing the ocean and property pool this room was generous with a one-of-a-kind view. The view boasts a perfect aerial shot of the main pool, emerald-green gardens, lush rice fields just beyond the property and the Indian Ocean in the distance. The view is enjoyed from a terrace spanning the entire length of the suite and including built-in loungers for private sun bathing. It was the absolute perfect spot to watch the epic sunrises and sunsets. This suite includes a canopy king-size bed, desk, lounging area and a super chic, modern bathroom with a dark stone bathtub big enough for two.

There are three pools on the property, the main pool which looks like it could be in a spread in Architectural Digest with clear modern lines and the signature of the property, a generous lap pool beside the main pool, and a pool located in the spa and wellness area. The Samata is Bali’s only health and fitness resort. 

The spa includes four treatment rooms and an expert staff with a beautiful menu of traditional massage and treatments, attached is the wellness centre which offers yoga, meditation, and a variety of physical programs led by the on-property staff. Both public and private classes can be booked daily. The equipment here is bar none with a Muay Thai ring and plenty of weights and cardio and a personal trainer to guide you along.

I enjoyed two activities that I loved during my stay, the first was a traditional Balinese Palm Reading with Bagus, the property healer and Wellness Centre Manager, and the second was a private cooking class with the property’s Chef where I learned how to make traditional Balinese favourites with a vegetarian twist. The cooking class was followed by a beautiful feast of our creations in the Zenso Restaurant and I was given a Cooking Class certificate, commemorative Samata Sanur apron and the recipes to try on my own at home.

My favourite part of my stay at The Samata was a visit to a nearby local temple for an authentic purification ceremony which was performed by the temple priest. I was accompanied by Bagus, who helped me prepare for the visit in traditional Balinese sarong and top, and his wife also prepared the traditional temple offerings for my ceremony. The temple is one that not many tourists know about or visit, but it is a special temple for purification because it is located five minutes from The Samata, on the coast where the river water and ocean water meet. Bagus led me through the temple explaining every detail as I participated in the traditional ceremony and I will never forget how special and deeply meaningful it was for me.  I received the first of two Tri Datu at this temple. Tri Datu is a unique Balinese bracelet made up of three colours of yarn: red, white and black. Balinese believe these yarn bracelets have magic powers, the red yarn represents Brahma, the black represents Vishnu and the white represents Shiva Tri Datu is also the symbol of Tri Kona (Birth, Life and Death) and has become a common reminder for the Balinese people of the greatness of God and the value of life. It was and still is a huge honour to wear this bracelet, especially as a reminder of this sacred ceremony at this special temple.

Luxury and Elegance at the Anantara Hotel Chiang Mai

From the moment you step out of your car and onto the vast marble floor of the open-air lobby you are transported to another world. If you look up you can see beyond the lobby, through a large rectangular space that frames the property in a way that only Architectural Digest could rival, you have arrived at Anantara Chiang Mai Resort and into the exquisite luxury of this incredible property.

The property’s welcome is gentle and loving, you are treated to a welcome drink, a cold aromatic towel and a gentle shoulder massage in the lobby while you wait for your room. The luxe here is palpable, and it permeates your senses making you feel luxe too.

Clean, sleek, modern lines and forever vantage points are a perfect metaphor for what is possible during your visit.  The marble and teak throughout are softened by textures in earthy colours on shallow and generous day beds which flank the lobby and have views of the reflection pool and property just beyond.  It is impossible to be in the space without being affected by it, carried away by it, inspired by it, moved by it.

This 52 rooms and 32 suites property is situated on the Mae Ping River in the heart of Chiang Mai with access to the city in all directions. My suite was spacious and generous with plenty of room to work and play. Every amenity and modern luxury was provided including a complimentary handy smartphone which I could use during my stay. Each room on the main property has a garden or river view, and intimate outdoor space for in-room dining and relaxing.

There are two incredibly beautiful things that happen each evening and afternoon which you can see from the lobby and you shouldn’t miss while you stay at Anantara. Live music is played on the veranda just outside of The Colonial House by a musician playing a traditional Thai instrument, and the floating candles are lit at dusk in the reflection pools just beyond the lobby by hand and wading in the pool. When the dusk light bathes these parts of the property it is magic, be sure to have your camera handy.

Dining at the Anantara Chiang Mai 

The dining at Anantara hotel Chiang Mai is just as lavish, with a handful of unique and authentic experiences to choose from. The Restaurant serves signature Peruvian and Indian dishes and is located on the far side of the property with riverside tables, this is also where you will find the morning buffet which is so abundant that you will have a hard time choosing between stations of made to order crepe and waffles and heaps and heaps of traditional breakfast dishes from around the world.

My favourite dinner at Anantara took place at The Service 1921 Restaurant and Bar. Imagine the mystique of a speakeasy mixed with the top-secret feel of a Bond movie. The spy theme is carried throughout this experience with secret mission menus and bespoke cocktails. The menu is spectacular, filled with both traditional Asian comforts and innovative Thai-inspired dishes. It was incredibly easy for me to find plenty of things to eat here as a vegetarian and my dinner was absolutely delicious.

If a light snack, happy hour aperitif or mid-day pick-me-up is on your list while you visit Anantara you can have each of these in The Lobby Lounge or Kasara Lounge; each is an opportunity to pause with all five senses.

Relax on the Rooftop or by the River 

There are two pools on property, one is adults only and located on the rooftop with a city view and the other has a river view just beyond the lotus and coy ponds that are incorporated in the modern and sleek lap pool design. The riverside pool was my favourite place for breakfast before anyone woke up, the 34 metre pool was all mine save one guest who was swimming her morning laps. The fitness centre is open 24-hours a day with attendants available from 7am until 10pm, so you can do your workout on your own or tap into the expertise of the personal trainer on staff.

Yoga and Tai chi happen on the property by the river and poolside or you can indulge in a Master Muay Thai boxing class taught on property.

Designed by Therefore Studio and interior stylist Elle Critchley, the perfect pairings of wood, exposed brick and greenery provide the ideal backdrop to the delectable menu showcasing pork belly cooked more ways than you could ever imagine. From classic street eats to spring rolls and pho, St. Cloud offers the best of Vietnam with a classic Melbourne twist.

SUPERNORMAL | 180 FLINDERS LANE, MELBOURNE

Melbourne has somewhat established itself as the city that makes you queue for hours upon hours for fabulous food. Right or wrong, it seems to be the way of the future. Fortunately for us, however, there are usually a plethora of bars in close vicinity to keep us occupied before it’s time to dine.

In short, Flinders Lane’s Supernormal is worth the wait. Plus, while you wait you can get comfy on one of the bar stools and catch all the action in the kitchen whilst sipping on a Prosecco cocktail.

Influenced by the restaurant scenes and cuisine of Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul and Hong Kong, the menu is packed with modern Asian fare. Kick off the meal with the caviar, chives and dashi cracker. It is pure decadence and will leave you feeling oh-so-fancy. Since no meal is complete without dumplings, it would be wrong not to indulge in the prawn and chicken dumplings with chilli and vinegar sauce. Finally, treat yourself to the famous peanut butter parfait with salted caramel and soft chocolate. There are no words to describe just how good this dessert is…but there is peanut butter and chocolate. Enough said.

Bookings are available at lunch time so if you can sneak away from the office, or even better, are on holiday, lock in your lunch and then simply turn up.

THE MAYFAIR BAR AND RESTAURANT | 45 COLLINS STREET, MELBOURNE

If elegance and charm are what you are after, then look no further than Mayfair, Melbourne’s New York inspired supper club. Situated on one of Melbourne’s swankiest city streets, this elegant dining room and cocktail bar is the perfect place to sip on a martini and throw back some oysters. The dim lighting and warm glow of frosted lamps will make you feel like you’re somewhere between Melbourne and New York, with a little Paris thrown in for good measure.

Feast on the fanciest of fancy, like the steak tartare with smoked oil and egg yolk, or the pork shoulder sausage rolls. They will put the sausage rolls at every kids’ birthday in Australia to shame. If you’re feeling fancy but still find it hard to go past a classic toastie, Mayfair has you covered: noix de jambon and brie toastie. Convinced yet? If not, I’ll just say this: live jazz every night. Thank you and goodnight.

I LOVE DUMPLINGS | 298 BRIDGE ROAD, RICHMOND

Fact: Melburnians love their dumplings. Whether it’s fine dining or budget bargains, Melbourne has a dumpling for every diner. I Love Dumplings is somewhat of a Melbourne institution, regularly feeding the residents of Richmond, Brunswick, Flemington, St Kilda and Fitzroy. What makes this place so good? No matter how much you wine and dine, you somehow never spend more than $20.

From steamed to fried, meat to vegetarian, dumplings abound at this charismatically chaotic venue. If, however, dumplings aren’t enough to satisfy you, there are rice dishes, noodles, pancakes and the best pork buns this side of the river.

This is also the kind of restaurant where you don’t have to ask for your wine glass to be filled to the rim. No judgement here my friends.

TONKA | 20 DUCKBOARD PLACE, MELBOURNE

To enter Tonka is to realise that Melbourne’s alleyways are hiding some of the city’s best dining destinations. A largely unassuming entryway in a laneway brought to life with colourful graffiti art, Tonka is moody from the outset. As you make your way through the restaurant, past the bustling kitchen, don’t forget to look up. The art installation adorning the ceiling is designed by Melbourne artist Naomi Troski and is a large amorphous work shaped by the space, transforming by the shifts in light and colour over the course of a day. It may also offer a welcome distraction should your Tinder date not bear any resemblance to their profile pictures…

If you’re after the quintessential Melbourne laneway experience, take a seat in the casual entrance Thali Bar, with a vast cocktail list dedicated to the colourful world of Indian spice. The bar offers a limited selection of Tonka’s modern Indian dishes, but I strongly recommend venturing further into the dining area. There awaits pani puri parcels with aromatic water, blue swimmer crab puttu betel leaf and hand dived scallop, to name a few. The dishes are packed with punchy flavours and truly capture the vibrancy of the subcontinent.

SAINT CRISPIN | 300 SMITH STREET, COLLINGWOOD

Melbourne has a thing for converting old spaces and Collingwood’s Saint Crispin is no exception. Formerly a cobbler’s workshop built in 1865, the space is now home to yet another Scott Pickett success story. Pickett is also the man behind two-hatted ESP, Estelle Bistro and the Queen Victoria Market’s Pickett’s Deli & Rotisserie.

With its palette of dark woods and navy blues, Saint Crispin is certainly keeping up with the Joneses when it comes to Melbourne’s design scene. The stylish interiors make everyone feel welcome; from families on a night out to friends and dates, to birthday celebrations where you might just score a free dessert decked out with sparklers. Maybe.

The ever-helpful staff will likely steer you towards the famous Snap Crackle Pop; the flavourful pork crackling that is not to be missed. If inventiveness is your jam, Saint Crispin fits the bill, with dishes like the asparagus with mushroom ketchup, shimeji and hazelnut. The winner, however, is undoubtedly the Humpty Doo barramundi. I challenge you to find a dish with a better name.

HAWKER HALL | 98 CHAPEL STREET, WINDSOR

Hawker Hall in Windsor brings the best of Southeast Asia’s hawker centres to inner city Melbourne. Famed the world over for their variety, delicious fare at bargain prices and unique dining experience, Hawker Hall seeks to bring the best of Singapore and Malaysia to one convenient location.

This horse stable-cum-food and beer hall is a veritable haven for food lovers. Beer food, satay, noodles, rice, roti, dumplings, curries, stir fry and sweets, most of which will set you back less than $20! Your table will quickly be overflowing with options, possibly making you regret those skinny jeans.

It’s all about sharing and caring at Hawker Hall, so just say “feed me” to the helpful staff and then wait for the adventure to begin.

FEAST OF MERIT | 117 SWAN STREET, RICHMOND

If you can summon the strength to walk in the opposite direction to Melbourne’s famed MCG, you’ll soon stumble upon one of Richmond’s foodie favourites. Opened in 2014, Feast of Merit showcases locally sourced, sustainable and seasonal produce. Most importantly, 100% of the profits directly support local impact entrepreneurs who have launched ventures to improve the lives of those living in poverty.

Feast of Merit’s name hails from the traditions of the far northeast Indian state of Nagaland. It is said that when a member of the Naga community comes into wealth, they host a feast for the entire village. The feast continues until the host has shared their wealth, which can last for several weeks, to celebrate the sharing of wealth and the joy it brings. Upon completion of the feast, the host resumes life as normal; with just the cloak on their shoulders. This cloak signifies the highest social prestige in Nagaland: hosting a Feast of Merit.

Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, there are ample opportunities to feast on everything from the shakshuka baked eggs to the Batata harra. Trust me when I say this is the dish for all potato lovers. It’s a simple philosophy at Feast of Merit: farm to fork and served to share.

THE BLACK TORO | 79 KINGSWAY, GLEN WAVERLEY

Glen Waverley is one of Melbourne’s latest foodie hotspots, with top notch restaurants and cafes popping up all around the suburb. When the restaurant opened its doors in 2012, Glen Waverley locals Garen Maskal, Aret Arzadian and Sasoon Arzadian were looking to bring the colour of Latin America to Melbourne’s south-east.

Head Chef Garen Maskal’s creations present the best of Hispanic cuisine with a modern Australian twist, with a menu that evolves throughout the seasons to take full advantage of every ingredient available.

Nestled in the bustling Kingsway, The Black Toro has a tapas menu that will tantalise your tastebuds. Chargrilled corn with chipotle mayo, queso fresco and fresh lime? Or maybe a croquette with jalapeno and cheese, espelette pepper and crema? You will be hard pressed to limit your choices to an “acceptable” number, so consider the Feed Me menu and let the knowledgeable staff keep you from popping a button.

MAMA MANOUSH | 175-177 LYGON STREET, BRUNSWICK EAST

Halloumi chips. I probably don’t need to say any more than that, but I will. One of the newest players on the Melbourne foodie scene, Mama Manoush opened its doors mid-November to welcome in lovers of Lebanese fair.

Mama throws open her doors six nights a week to the restaurant located at the front of the establishment, if you’re feeling a bit fancy. If, however, you are after a more casual night, the Mama Garden has your name on it, plus a shawarma to boot. With Melbourne’s notoriously temperamental weather, the indoor/outdoor garden is the answer to our frizzy-hair fears. The gorgeous greenery and calming water features provide the perfect backdrop to the authentic, traditional meals on offer. Oh, and did I mention they have popcorn ice cream?

No food guide Melbourne style would be complete without some mouthwatering after dinner treats. Housed inside Melbourne’s iconic Adelphi Hotel lies a luxurious, sumptuously decorated bar. Om Nom’s executive pastry chef Jo Ward’s creative flair has been likened to culinary genius Heston Blumenthal. Enough said. If you’re not sold, however, I’ll just mention the Chocnut Bomb 2.0 with peanut butter parfait, peanut butter powder, chocolate coated rice bubbles, raspberry fluid gel and dehydrated chocolate mousse. Or maybe it’s the White Peach Injection made with white peach sorbet, raspberry and rose curd, peach nitro and toasted marshmallow milk granita that will make your mouth water. Either way, your eyes are in for as big a treat as your tastebuds.

The land that Kamalaya is built on is sacred land, land loved for a long, long time by monks and other indigenous people who gave more than they took and you can feel this from the moment you step through the front gates of the property. The Monk’s Cave, found near the holistic spa and treatment centre, has been lovingly kept in-tact, and serves as a beautiful reminder of ancient times. It is the heart of the place, both literally and symbolically because of the energy felt in the cave. It is the perfect place to wander into and sit quietly and meditate or just listen. Candles, offerings, pillows and incense are available as well as many spiritual relics and alters to show your devotion. The Thai culture is a gentle one, one of grace and humility, and gratitude. Everyone I met during my stay at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary is in service, fully and unconditionally, in service with love and devotion.

I arrived to receive my very first of many fresh chilled lemongrass cloths and a tropical welcome drink. This combination, and others with various scents and herbs, became a cherished part of my stay and I will always associate the smell of lemongrass with the healing that I experienced at Kamalaya.

Because Kamalaya is devoted to wellness, every guest that arrives is given a personalised program based on their needs and intentions if they desire this type of experience. The sanctuary and the team are composed of various disciplines and practitioners of holistic medicine with treatments ranging from Ancient Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and many other global schools, to Reiki and Thai Massage. The mind, body and spirit healing approach takes place at the “cellular level” with an initial Body Bioelectric Impedance Analysis which measures vitality. From there, guests meet with a naturopath who consults with them one-on-one regarding their stay, program and intentions.

My visit to Kamalaya came on the heels of a 7-day detox retreat in Phuket, and my hope was to follow the detox with additional mind, body, spirit healing and guidance on how to continue the healthy lifestyle on my own in the future. My consultation with the naturopath was personal and gave me an overall plan for the week of my stay which included diet, exercise and various treatments provided by the team at Kamalaya. I left this initial consultation feeling incredibly happy to be there and in loving hands for my planned stay ahead.

Pool Villa 

My Pool Villa was centrally located on the property within walking distance to the spa, the monk’s cave, yoga platform, beach and pools and all of the restaurants on property. It also had an incredible view of the beach from the private jungle deck with plenty of room to enjoy a nap or journalling and sunset tea gazing in the afternoons. 

My favourite part about this suite, and what makes it unique to any other room at Kamalaya, is the inner, private courtyard with an outdoor bathing pool and waterfall. This courtyard connects the separate living room space, the outdoor bathroom space and the separate sleeping space, and it provides the perfect private respite with the sound of water which you can hear from the bedroom.

Every bit of my stay was catered to the holistic plan set in place on the day I arrived. Because I was transitioning from my detox, caution was given to go slow, eat intentionally and enjoy the spa treatments. A schedule of treatments per day was waiting for me in my villa when I arrived, along with a plate of fresh, organic fruit.

The luxurious living space provided plenty of room to do just that, live. I enjoyed the open-air shower and melted into the king-size bed each night with the glow of the courtyard and pool and the sound of the water lulling me to sleep.

Organic Detox Cuisine

I will never forget the food at Kamalaya, and that Kamalaya taught me that food is indeed medicine.  Not only is the menu completely guided by wellness, but the guiding principles of the program encompass everything that healthy eating is. Among the principles of this food are that the food is served as close to its natural state as possible. With very little additives, or processing or preserving even. No artificial flavours, or colours and low in sugar, sodium and fat. The quality and freshness of each of the ingredients could be tasted in every bite, and the creativity of the chef inspired me to try new things to substitute for the things that had become part of my everyday diet. I also fell madly in-love with Thai fresh coconuts.

Beyond all of this, the Kamalaya intention is to educate each guest about this first medicine of food so that we can feel empowered to continue the healthy eating on our own. I loved the clear little signs on each plate and dish during breakfast indicating which menu and choices were part of my personalised program for the week, it made it so much easier but I could see the many, many other options that inspired me to remember these things for when I returned home. I came to love the daily green shots, and freshly squeezed juices that were included in each breakfast. I learned what mung beans are and loved the incredible mung bean gluten-free pasta and a mung bean cake that was absolutely brilliant.

There are three dining options on the property of Kamalaya. The Soma Restaurant which is open for breakfast and dinner and includes a spacious open air dining room with intimate tables and a daily communal table which was a lovely way to meet other guests and share a meal together. The Amrita Café, which is nestled along the lotus ponds and swimming pool with private dining “salas” and intimate alcoves which feel incredibly delicious and offer the perfect daily lunch spots. The Alchemy Bar which is located just above the Soma Restaurant with an incredible view of the water and the perfect spot for an afternoon tea or star-gazing dessert.

Staying Active at Kamalaya

Of course, there are many water sports and adventures off-property to enjoy on Koh Samui but sitting still called to me while I was there. Daily movement invitations are given, everything from yoga and moving meditation on the beach to fitness. The state of the art fitness facility can be visited on your own or you can add personal instruction and there are several pools on property if swimming is your favourite way to move.

I attended an intimate guided mediation one of the nights of my stay. A visiting monk took a small group of us through a sunset heart-opening meditation with devotional chanting and it was so beautiful.

I wandered the property when I had time to move and stopped at all of the little spirit houses and alters I found tucked in every corner. I also spent time in the Monk’s Cave sitting still and chanting and feeling the energy of the ancient space. I met the owner, John Stewart, one morning as I was happily wandering and learned that we have Marin California in common and that his childhood time there inspired some of the design of the space. I especially loved learning that the architect he commissioned took careful care to create works of art, almost like natural paintings, with each window on the property. Noticing the medicine of each natural gift of art was a beautiful part of my stay at Kamalaya.

I found a lookout above the pool and fitness centre with a garden and swing and Tibetan flags and I sat on the swing for a long, long time watching the flags in the breeze and listening to the quiet. There is even medicine in the quiet, in the stillness, of Kamalaya, and I breathed it in and drank it up as if my life depended on it.

The Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary 

The wellness sanctuary and holistic spa offers a robust menu of treatments. The personalised plan for my stay included a 60 minute Vital Essence Oil Massage on the first day which was the perfect way to drop into the space and plan for the week. I enjoyed a 60 minute Traditional Asian Foot Massage and a 30 minute Traditional Asian Hand Massage the next day along with a 60 minute Indian Head Massage that I’m still dreaming about. It was a day of pampering, hands, feet and head, three hard-working parts that deserved some extra attention. I especially loved the coconut oil part of the head massage, it was an added bonus to have the extra conditioning for my hair.

I enjoyed several traditional Thai massages during my stay which were the perfect blend of stretching and massaging and left me in a blissed out state. Each time, I was invited into the steam room afterwards and then I took a dip in the three pools which graduating in temperature and were nestled high above the property with views of the water.

On the last day my treatments included a 75 minute Lotus Blossom Scrub and Body Wrap and a 30 minute Chi Nei Tsang treatment which is an ancient tummy massage. It was the absolute perfect way to end my stay and I’m already plotting my return; once every year.
