Bodhi & Ride

This ‘aint your traditional cycling class. I haven’t done one of the infamous Soul Cycle classes that everyone’s going crazy about in the US, but I imagine Bodhi & Ride is as close to that as you’re going to get in Australia.

You get allocated a numbered bike and find your seat inside what they call the “chamber”, a small, dark room with neon lighting. Once that chamber door shuts there is no escaping.

Vibrant beats pump out of the speakers and the instructor yells motivational cues through the microphone as you push those legs, but what makes this class different, is that there are arm exercises thrown in there as well.

The instructor will tell you when she wants you to do push-ups on the handlebars or pick up a set of weights and do shoulder presses as you cycle. It takes a bit of coordination, but it really gives you a full-body workout.

Image © Sophia Lazarides

Tribute Boxing

Former IBO world super featherweight champion, Will Tomlinson, set up this studio in Abbotsford after retiring from professional boxing, last year. There’s really nothing else like this out there, that I am aware of, so it’s great to see something unique hit the fitness scene.

When I went to do my first, private class with Will, he asked whether I’d done much boxing, to which I replied, “Yeah, a bit”, thinking of the free kickboxing classes run in the park by the local council. About a minute into Will’s class I realised I’d never done boxing like that. Like, real, proper, actual, Muhammad Ali-style boxing (except nowhere near as good, obviously).

These guys are really good at what they do and focus as much on your boxing technique as they do on ensuring you get a decent workout.

There’s a different circuit-style class each day, with varying time intervals for each exercise. The exercises range from boxing to treadmill sprints to medicine ball slams etc, so you’re sure to get a resistance workout as well as improve your fitness.

Sum of Us

This gorgeous, little studio located in an old Prahran townhouse, focuses on a holistic approach to health and fitness. You can get your sore, tired muscles sorted with physiotherapy, massage, or podiatry treatments, help your mind stay calm with meditation, or try their yoga, Pilates, and barre classes.

This is where I’ve been going for my meditation, and the teacher, Kasey, is such a calming force. She runs Euonia meditation which isn’t religious or hard and it doesn’t require a mantra.

Sum of Us describes it as “A place where you can come to just be you”, and in their beautiful, leafy surroundings with birds chirping gleefully (but peacefully), it’s actually quite simple to do.

You can even get a coffee or smoothie in the Sum of Us cafe on your way out.

A light and airy yoga and Pilates studio on the other side of town. It’s run by the same guys who own a few F45 studios around Melbourne, so they really know what they’re doing.

Often personal trainers head to Remedy on a weekend to stretch out their weary muscles after a week of tough HIIT training.

My favourite class here is the Remedy Restore, a medium-intensity class suitable for those newish to yoga. It’s ideal for a deep stretch and to recharge the batteries, but it certainly makes you sweat.

What I love most about this studio is that they don’t play your average yoga music in the background; Kat’s playlist ranges from Radiohead to Sigur Ros.

There is nothing quite like some hot, new activewear to pump you up for a workout. In fact, I treat my exercise gear as fashion. I always want to look as stylish as possible when I’m working out, to make up for the blotchy, red face and sweat running down every inch of my body. Staying on top of trends helps and the mesh and cut-out craze is still one of the hottest in activewear right now, taking you from the studio to the street, in style.

Sophia Lazarides

You’ll find cut-outs and mesh detailing everywhere right now, from sports crops to tights, and tees. Be it cut-outs covered over with mesh or those simply revealing bare skin, it’s a trend that will keep you looking stylish while you pound the pavement. It’s also an effective option for high-octane sweat sessions, as any mesh will dry faster and breathe better than other fabrics, keeping you cooler.

I am obsessed with these Lululemon mesh tights. Not only have these got a cute cut-outs around the ankle to up their fashion cred, they’re also made of super compression fabric, so they hug you in all the right places. You can wear them to the gym, for a leisurely stroll or for your Saturday supermarket run. They’d even be great for travelling. I paired them back with a simple slim fit tank, with its own mesh venting, meaning it is super comfortable and made for anything from running to yoga.

Barwon Heads is a small, sleepy, coastal town about 90 minutes drive southwest of Melbourne. It’s close to the better-known towns of Geelong and Ocean Grove. Barwon Heads was largely a fisherman’s village back in the day, becoming a popular holiday spot in the 1930s, when the wealthy Melbourne crowd flocked there to build houses by the sea. Golf has been a very big part of Barwon’s growth, with the very exclusive Barwon Heads Golf Club perched a top a little hill right by the ocean.

The town’s population is only around 4,000 but swells at summer time. However, part of its charm is the fact it’s still far less popular than beachside towns along the Great Ocean Road, such as Lorne and Torquay. Because Barwon Heads is so close to Melbourne, we love to get down there at any time of the year to feel that glorious salty air on our skin, hit the local cafes and take a break from city life. Here’s a list of my must-dos while you’re in Barwon.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7416" class="wp-image-7416 size-full" src="https://thefittraveller.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Barwon-Heads-4.jpg" alt="The Barwon Heads Caravan Park Beach Houses offer self-contained accommodation just off the sand.
There are no big-name hotels in Barwon. I know when you read “caravan park” you probably don’t think of the most luxurious accommodation, but these fully self-contained beachfront cabins at Barwon Heads Caravan Park give you the best view in town and are really clean and very nicely furnished.

Cost: from about $AUD220 per night

There are also some great houses/apartments to rent on Airbnb and Stayz.

At the Heads is the only eatery in town right on the beach. When I say ‘right on the beach’, I mean literally sitting right on the sand (well on a pier). The wonderful views are coupled with basic, but great breakfasts, lunches and dinner, with a focus on seafood.

We jumped in our HR-V and hit the road on a very cold and frosty Saturday morning. We first headed for the tiny, historic town of Creswick, which is about an hour-and-a-half’s drive north-west from Melbourne. Its origins lie in gold mining and it is packed full of attractions, like the Creswick Woollen Mills and, if golf is your thing, the championship 18-hole golf course at the Novotel Forest Resort.

Smack-bang in the middle of Creswick’s one-street town, is the most delightfully cosy, authentic French patisserie; Le Péché Gourmand – so out of place, yet so, so perfect. We stocked up on a few treats to share, like the classic Citron Tart. Needless to say, I would drive all the way to Creswick just to eat here again. It’s almost like Paris is only an hour’s drive away… almost.

Tuki Trout Farm, Victoria.
Next it was time to don our Blundstones and get our hands dirty at the Tuki Trout Farm for a true farm-to-plate experience. It’s here where you catch your own trout and then have it cleaned, de-boned, cooked and served up to you in the most scrumptious meal ever, beside a cosy fire, with a glass of local wine if you wish.

Now, don’t get me wrong, fishing isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but here all the icky stuff is done for you (your hooks are threaded with corn, rather than worms) and you also don’t need the patience required for ocean fishing. Well, that’s the theory anyway. We were told we should each have caught a fish in five minutes. It took us 45…Anyway, it was well worth the wait. The lovely staff served us up a feast of fresh trout, baked in alfoil over a fire, a fresh salad made with locally-grown produce and potatoes that rivalled my Yiayia’s Greek spuds (don’t tell her I said that!).

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2739" class="wp-image-2739 size-full" src="http://www.thefittraveller.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Vic-soph-with-fish.jpg" alt="Sophia Lazarides with her Tuki Trout Farm catch.
By now we were feeling pretty full, so thought we’d better check into our digs for the night, change into our stretchy pants and have a nanna nap before the next meal.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2741" class="wp-image-2741 size-full" src="http://www.thefittraveller.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Vic-trout-served.jpg" alt="Mouthwatering trout lunch at Tuki Trout Farm, Victoria.
Our hotel, iconic institution, Frangos & Frangos, is in Daylesford, just a 30 minute drive from Tuki and a much more happening place than Creswick. It’s full of country pubs, great antique stores and quaint homewares shops. I cannot recommend Frangos & Frangos highly enough! Its 12 rooms, are each a completely different design with pure opulence and luxurious comfort in mind. I’ve been told one room even has a round bed! We arrived to a warm spa bath and champagne and realised it was going to be pretty hard to leave to make our dinner reservation..

Delicious degustation at The Argus Dining Room, Hepburn, Victoria.
Nonetheless, we made it to hatted restaurant, The Argus Dining Room in Hepburn Springs, just a ten-minute drive from the hotel. We were greeted by a dimly-lit, romantic restaurant with white tablecloths and fancy silverware. The Maitre D’ showed us to our table – right by a toasty fire – nothing better on a chilly winter’s night. We opted for the five-course degustation (like we hadn’t had enough food already!) washed down with a bottle of country Victorian wine.

Fresh paddock to plate delights at The Argus Dining Room, Hepburn, Victoria. Image © Sophia Lazarides

The food at The Argus is modern Australian cuisine with much of the produce sourced locally – they have a veggie garden on site and the meat comes from a nearby farm. There are dishes of fish, duck, chicken, pork, lamb and beef. I am so glad we chose the degustation because the Wagyu Beef dish – something I would not have ordered otherwise – was the best beef I have EVER eaten in my life! I can also highly recommend the sashimi and the caramelised banana dessert *Licks lips*.

Decadent dessert at The Argus Dining Room, Hepburn, Victoria.
With our tastebuds alive and our judgement clouded by red wine, we wanted to kick on after dinner. Now, in a country town like Daylesford, there aren’t too many night spots you can go dressed like you’ve come from one of the best restaurants in the country. BUT, trust me to always find one! Enter; The Perfect Drop. It’s the cutest little place, set in an old, Victorian home, with timber floorboards and old-school leather couches. We managed to get the managers to stay open a little longer for us. They serve dinner here too and have live music, so it would be a great spot for a birthday or hens/bachelor party.

The must-try menu item at Café Koukla, Daylesford – Jim’s Greek Omelette. Image © Sophia Lazarides

After a great night’s sleep, it was time for more food. Breakfast. Frangos & Frangos gives you two options; Café Koukla or Jimmy’s Bar and Dining Room. We chose to go to Café Koukla, which is a very funky, Melbourne-style eatery which serves up fantastic coffee and hearty meals. Definitely try Jim’s Greek Omelette – it’s served in a huge frypan, on a stand and is TO. DIE. FOR.

We next headed on a must-do tour of the Convent Gallery. There is so much more to this place than just art – the building is beautiful and it has an incredibly rich history. If you can swing it, ask if the Manager, Liam, can take you on a tour – he’s incredibly passionate about the Convent’s owner and how she managed to buy the place (it’s an interesting tale) and will be able to share with you a few secrets about the place.

The Convent also served up some delicious warm scones for us (a girl’s gotta have morning tea, right?) before we headed on our way to lunch. More food, glorious food.

For our final food stop of the weekend, we found ourselves at The Boathouse, sitting right on the picturesque Lake Daylesford. Like all our other food stops on this trip, food at The Boathouse is all about fresh, regional produce. It was fantastic! Try the Lamb Kofta or the Southern Fried Chicken and definitely pick a dessert from the fridge on your way out, for the road, you know.

If you’re anything like us and don’t feel like you can sit straight in a car for an hour on such a full stomach, there’s a beautiful walking track which takes you right around the lake in about 25 minutes.

I have always put off visiting Hawaii for fear it would be overrun by tourists and overpriced food and drink. While it is a tourist hot spot, there are plenty of places to escape the crowds and find reasonably priced meals. Plus, it’s almost an all-year-round kind of place. I was there in February, which is technically winter, but the weather was perfect for swimming. I really would have liked to have had more time to put my feet up. But if, like me, you only have a few days my Oahu 3 day itinerary is the perfect plan for you.

Sophia Lazarides soaking up the sun on Lanikai Beach, Oahu.
Oahu 3-Day Itinerary

This Oahu 3 day itinerary has a little taste of all of the amazing things to do in Oahu.

From hiking, shopping, snorkeling, and swimming to dining on some delicious healthy food, we’ve got you covered for your Oahu vacation.

Oahu 3 Day Itinerary: Day One

Shop at the Waikele Premium Shopping Outlets

I don’t know about you, but I treat shopping as exercise. It’s hard work. And the shopping in Hawaii certainly leaves nothing to be desired.

On the first morning of your Oahu itinerary, I would suggest getting the Waikele Premium Shopping Outlets out of the way.

You can find everything from skincare to designer shoes, handbags, sunglasses, and clothing, all at incredible prices.

Think of a Coach bag paired with a pair of Michael Kors shoes for under $300. Yes, really.

Spend a few hours here. You can catch the bus (US$15 return) from Waikiki – it leaves from a number of designated hotels. Check with your concierge for your closest departure point.

Waikiki Esplanade

After you’ve done some damage to the credit card, you can head back into Waikiki for an afternoon of walking and swimming.

Work up a bit of sweat with a walk all the way up the Waikiki esplanade.

Aside from plenty of spots to jump in the ocean, you can also spot the famous statue of Duke, the Hawaiian dude who invented surfing.

Bills

There’s no doubt, after all this action, you’ll be hungry, so head to Bills for dinner.

It’s the same Bills as in Sydney, which is a favorite for yummy breakfasts, but at the one in Waikiki, there’s no need to fight for a table and the dinner menu is outstanding.

It’s inspired by fresh, tropical produce and a fusion of a whole bunch of cuisines. The coffee is also pretty damn good.

Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii. Image © Sophia Lazarides

Oahu 3 Day Itinerary: Day Two

Try and get an early start on Day Two. You’ll need it to beat the crowds.

Today, you’re heading for Diamond Head; formed by a volcanic eruption more than 100,000 years ago.

It was originally used as a strategic military outlook but is now a popular 1.1km hiking trail with an incredible view of Waikiki and the south shore.

Gorilla in the Cafe, Oahu, Hawaii. Image © Sophia Lazarides

Acai bowl from Gorilla in the Cafe, Oahu, Hawaii. Image © Sophia Lazarides

Hike the Diamond Head Trail

You can get to Diamond Head by bus, taxi, or walking/running if you’ve got the energy. If you’re like me, you will enjoy running all the way up to the top.

The trail is a fairly tricky one and obviously all uphill, but if there aren’t too many people around, it’s a nice way to work up a sweat, and the reward once you get to the top (via two sets of steep stairs & a dark, underground tunnel), is well and truly worth it.

After making your way down (the crowds will likely have built up by now) the hill and back into Waikiki, jump in the ocean to cool off and then grab a feed.

Acai bowl from Gorilla in the Cafe, Oahu, Hawaii. Image © Sophia Lazarides

Gorilla in the Café

Gorilla in the Café might not look like much, but you can tell a place is good when there’s a line of tourists out the door.

It also actually does the best Australian-style coffee along the main drag, in my opinion.

Not a filtered coffee in sight. I’m talking smooth, creamy milk and strong coffee shots.

The café also does green smoothies, and a decent Acai bowl (it actually comes in a cup), filled to the brim with banana, strawberries, and muesli.

SUP in Waikiki

Spend the rest of the day SUP-ping in Waikiki.

The cheapest SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) board hire rates I found were at Koa Board Sports where it’s US$25 for an hour.

If you don’t feel up to more exercise, you can grab some rays by your hotel pool. Remember: Happy Hour usually starts at around 3-4 pm.

Sunset at Duke’s Waikiki Beach. Image © Sophia Lazarides

Sunset Drinks at Duke’s

To top the day off, you can’t go past watching the sun go down over Waikiki beach while sipping a cocktail at Duke’s.

I can recommend the Coconut Mojito and the Tropical Itch (which conveniently comes with a back-scratcher you can take home).

Duke’s sits right on the beach at the Outrigger Resort and is so popular it’s best to get there around 5 pm, otherwise you won’t get a table, especially one outside on the beachfront.

The food at Duke’s is also really yummy. I can vouch for the fish tacos.

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, Kahuku, Hawaii.
Oahu 3 Day Itinerary: Day Three

Day three of our Oahu 3-day itinerary was probably my favorite.

We took a full-day Oahu road trip around the entire island. It involved a lot of delicious food and swimming in the glassy water (which of course are the things Hawaii is known for).

Brue Bar

First, wake up to an early alarm and hire a car (preferably an iconic Mustang convertible). If you’re in need of a wake-up in the form of caffeine, grab a really, incredibly good coffee from Brue Bar in downtown Honolulu.

Hanuama Bay

Then head into Waikiki and drive east, taking the coastal route. Drive past Diamond Head and head to Hanuama Bay for some of the best snorkeling you might ever experience. This glassy, blue bay is full of thousands of tropical fish, but be aware – it gets busy! It’s best to get there before 9.30 am otherwise the car park is full and you’ll get turned away. (Note: it is closed on Tuesdays).

Lanai Lookout

Your second stop is a quick one at Lanai Lookout, just past Hanauma Bay. On a clear, winter’s day, you can see humpback whales splashing out at sea. Interesting fact: President Barack Obama scattered his grandmother’s ashes here in 2008.

Waimanalo Beach

By now, you’re probably feeling like another quick dip in the ocean. Head straight to Waimanalo Beach; it’s isolated and peaceful, so perfect for reading a book or taking selfies while no one can see you.

Between Waimanalo and the next stop, there is a stack of beautiful, pristine beaches you can stop at for swimming – e.g. Kailua, Lanikai, and Kahaluu (which has decent snorkeling).

Kahuku

But if you’re like us and are ready for some food after Waimanalo, I would suggest putting the top down and driving straight along the coast all the way up to Kahuku. It is here where I had the best shrimp scampi (garlic prawns) of my life, at Giovanni’s.

You can’t miss it – it’s a food truck right on the side of the road with swarms of hungry people waiting for food. But, God it’s worth the wait.

There is a bunch of other food trucks in the vicinity of Giovanni’s.

You absolutely cannot leave without trying Uncle Woody’s BBQ Corn. There’s also a truck that serves yummy salad wraps, green juices, and fresh lemonade.

Kuilima Cove

After lunch, head for some relaxation at Kuilima Cove at Turtle Bay Resort. By now you’re on the famous North Shore.

The resort is actually where ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ was filmed. The water is perfectly clear and really good for snorkeling.

From here, of course, you’ve got the famous Sunset Beach and Pipeline where, at the right time of year, you can see world-champion surfers riding massive waves.

Unluckily (or luckily) for us, there was no surf so all comps had been called off, but it meant we could take yet another dip at Pipeline and it actually turned out to be the best ocean swim of my life. Clear, calm water with not a soul around – perfection.

Unsurprisingly, more beautiful beaches are dotted along the coastline as you continue along; Waimea Bay and Laniakea Beach.

Before you take a turn onto Highway 99 to head back into Honolulu, no stop on the North Shore is complete without getting a traditional shave ice in Haleiwa – a groovy little Hawaiian town with a huge surfing history and relaxed vibe.

We took advice from the locals and hit Matsumoto’s (you can’t miss it – there’s always a huge line out the door) for “the best shave ice in town”. Who would’ve thought flavored ice could be so delicious?

Now, it’s only just over an hour’s drive back into Honolulu. Follow the signs from Haleiwa onto the highway.

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably feeling a little sun-drenched and full of shaved ice and prawns, but that’s never stopped us from eating more food! I can recommend Goofy Café in Honolulu for a light, healthy dinner. The focus here is on eating locally.

They have delicious, fresh salads, tapas, pasta, and cocktails. They also serve an all-day breakfast.

This Oahu 3-day itinerary really is just a taster of all the incredible things to do in Oahu Hawaii. But, we hope it’s a good start for those planning their first Oahu vacation.
