Many of the things to do in Palm Beach Sydney centre around the water; from the famed Palm Beach itself to fun adventures on Pittwater.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk

You’ll need an activity to burn off all that decadent food consumed during your stay in Palm Beach. So, grab your runners and enjoy a walk to Barrenjoey Lighthouse, situated at Sydney’s most northern point.

Built from sandstone in 1881, the lighthouse, oil room and keepers’ cottage remain untouched in the original stone finish. There are two routes to reach it; a steeper, shorter climb (not suitable for prams), or a slightly longer climb with steps.

Once you do reach the top, you’ll be blown away by the vista. Pittwater is off to the right and the Pacific Ocean to your left. You will enjoy views across to Broken Bay, Ku-rin-gai Chase National Park and the Central Coast.

Go Paddleboarding on Pittwater

If waterborne activities are more of your thing you can hire a paddleboard or tinnie from Alf’s Bait Shop at The Boathouse. Yes, the real Alf’s Bait Shop used in Home & Away. Spending the afternoon cruising the many secret coves and beaches along the Pittwater Basin is one of the best things to do in Palm Beach.

Where to Eat and Drink in Palm Beach and Surrounds

The Newport

The Newport has long been a local favourite, particularly with families and larger groups. The sprawling beachside pub is definitely worth stopping by for a tipple or a long lunch.

Settle into the main communal deck and enjoy views over Pittwater for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There are plenty of menu options from fresh seafood to pub grub and plenty of activities for the kids too.

Bert’s Bar and Brasserie

For a fine dining experience, make a beeling for the more refined 1930s inspired dining room of Bert’s Bar and Brasserie. Merivale’s Justin Hemmes rarely gets it wrong and Bert’s is a testament to that. The need for more of a white tablecloth dining destination with a relaxed Northern beaches feel has more than filled the gap he found yearning in this part of Sydney.

Undermaster sommeliers Franck Moreau and Adrian Filiuta, Bert’s balances older homegrown vintages with new, exciting produce from further afield. They also utilise the latest technology, pouring their wine using a Coravin; a device that allows a wine pour without pulling the cork, preventing oxidation.

The Boathouse Palm Beach

The beautiful waterside location of The Boathouse Palm Beach sets the tone for a relaxing breakfast or lunch at this relaxed cafe.

The menu features fresh, colourful delights while showcasing local produce and seafood finds. Another great spot to take the family, make sure you get here early, particularly on the weekend as they don’t take reservations and space fills up fast.

Jonah’s Whale Beach

From The Newport, it’s a short drive down Barrenjoey Road and a left up the snaking Surf Road to reach Jonah’s. Jonah’s is one of Sydney’s most spectacularly located fine dining restaurants.

Dine on fruits de Mer at you gaze out across neighbouring Whale Beach. Or, tuck into the sumptuous rib eye in red wine jus. The Chocolate Cremoso with wattleseed ice cream, coffee and marsala sabayon is the icing on the proverbial cafe. It should bee washed down with a Late Harvest dessert wine from the Centennial Vineyards in the Southern Highlands.

If you’re strapped for time, Jonah’s also offers a ‘fly-in’ package with Sydney Seaplanes. You will be fed, watered and back to the harbour in style, within four hours.

Visit Clareville

Clareville Beach is a local gem and the perfect spot for those looking for somewhere off the beaten track. 15-minutes drive south of Palm Beach, snake the bushland curves bound for the Clareville Kiosk. Snag yourself a lobster roll there and plan an afternoon of paddleboarding or fishing off Taylor’s Point Wharf.

This quiet and secluded suburb has one of the area’s most picturesque coastlines. With fibro surf shacks nestled next to waterside mansions, it’s a hidden location that guarantees you’ll always find a spot of sand to yourself.

Barrenjoey House

Check in to Barrenjoey House, a 1920s guesthouse recently transformed by new owners, The Boathouse Group into a seven-bedroom boutique hotel. It comes complete with a sun-drenched terrace and Hamptons-themes communal lounge space.

Resplendent with whitewashed floorboards, clamshells, decorative dishes stacked high with citrus fruit and nautical trinkets. Rooms overlook the stunning Pittwater Bay. They come with a fully stocked mini-bar and breakfast options to tide you over until service begins at the restaurant downstairs.

There you’ll find a menu peppered with freshly baked flatbreads, oysters and kingfish. Wash it down with a carefully crafted cocktail or a glass of wine from their extensive international selection.

With sandy feet, peeling noses and full bellies, the hour drive back to central Sydney is a scenic one. You’ll wind your way through the Bilgola Bends and down into the more densely populated suburbs of Collaroy, Dee Why and Balgowlah.

Palm Beach is known as the home of the wealthy. But, it’s also a relaxing getaway destination for Sydneysiders who enjoy nature, good food and switching off.

How to Get to Palm Beach Sydney

Palm Beach is 40 km from Sydney’s CBD, an easy 65-minute drive. Allow a bit longer and hop on the B Line bus from Wynyard Station in Sydney’s CBD, which drops you off on Barrenjoey Road, right overlooking the Pittwater Basin.

How to Get to Lake Como

• Como is easily accessible by train, car, bus, and/or ferry.
• If you hire a car, we recommend you choose both a smaller car and opt for full excess. The roads are essentially single lanes, pretending to be twin lanes with one side flanked by a sharp drop to the water, and the other often unforgiving rock of a tight tunnel carved through the mountainside.
• From Milan, trains leave from Milan Nord Cardona, taking you directly to Como Nord Lago. The trip only takes about 35 minutes. From Como, you can get on a bus, ferry, or fast boat up the lake to your town.
• If you are basing yourself in Varenna, you can catch a train directly there from Milan.
• If you are staying in Belaggio or Menaggio, there is also the option to catch the train to Varenna and take the ferry across to either town from there.
• Lake Como day trips are popular too with a full-day tour from Milan a good option for those without a car or short on time.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The best way to visit Como is to decide on Como village to base yourself in for a number of days and visit the other surrounding Lake Como towns by ferry during your stay.

If you visit Lake Como in the high season (Summer), you should book your hotel well in advance. The villages are small and hotels book out quickly.

There are a number of iconic luxury hotels in Lake Como like Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, and Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como where you can call a villa home for a few days. Nothing beats the immersive experience of staying on the iconic lakefront like a celebrity if you are able to splurge.

For those travelling to Lake Como with kids, the Hilton Lake Como could be a good option. Located close to the train station in Como, it has family rooms and suites and amenities like a rooftop pool, and gym (which aren’t very common among boutique hotels on the lake).

There are also many boutique hotels in Lake Como and less-expensive bed and breakfasts accommodation for those looking for more budget accommodation near Lake Como.

If you visiting Como in Summer, ensure your accommodation has air conditioning as the heat can be stifling. Also, check on parking availability if you need it as parking is at a premium around all the Lake Como towns.

Lake Como Towns: Bellagio

Bellagio is easily the most well-known of the Lake Como towns and probably the best town to stay in Lake Como if you are hoping for more of a buzz. As its main business district, it is a bustling hubbub of activity.

Getting from Como to Belaggio takes about 45 minutes by ferry or bus. Ferries from Bellagio are frequent and of good value. You can take a car or travel as a foot passenger. But ensure you are 30 minutes early for the ferry you want to catch to beat the queues and secure your spot. It’s not possible to pre-book ferries. 

From here, you can catch an easy ferry over to Menaggio or onwards to Varenna, a unique way to see the many harbourfront hotels in pastel shades of pink and peach, and homes steeped way up into the Italian Alps.

Many visitors question whether to visit Menaggio or Bellagio during their time in Lake Como. The obvious answer is if you have time, visit both.

Bellagio is a much busier town during the day full of day-trippers (popular as it’s a great option to add to most Italy itineraries). It quietens down at night time. So, if you base yourself here and visit the other towns during the day, you can enjoy the quaint restaurants and more relaxed streets in the afternoons and evenings, perhaps.

There are some incredible things to do in Bellagio where pristine botanical gardens mingle next to a popular lido, churches steeped in history, and museums full of relics.

Things to do in Bellagio Lake Como

There are so many great things to do in Bellagio. From wine tasting to walks and visits to stunning villas and gardens.

Here are a few ideas for what to do in Bellagio:

• Visit the Parco di Villa Serbelloni. Tours take about 90 minutes. Guests learn about the history of the villa, and the gardens and enjoy the magnificent view of the lake over to Lecco. It costs about 10 euros per person (children under 6 are free).
• Stroll the gorgeous Villa Melzi Botanical Gardens designed by architect Luigi Canonica and agronomist Luigi Villoresi. The gardens are open over Summer. Tickets are about 8 euros each (children are free). Guided tours can be booked at an additional cost. Wear comfortable shoes. Read more here.
• Do a wine tasting at an ‘enoteca’. This is a must-do in Lake Como for wine lovers. You’ll find these little wine cellar bars by simply wandering the backstreets of any of the villages. You may need to book in high season. Settle in for delicious wines matched with tasty antipasti.
• Hire a boat in Bellagio and go in search of George. You can hire a small boat from one of the vendors on the lakefront without a boat license. The boats are small 40hp boats that you can hire by the hour or half-day for upwards of about 100 euros. Cruise on your boat like an A-lister, take a dip in the lake and enjoy the magical views of the villages from the stunning emerald waters.

Lake Como Towns: Varenna

Varenna is full of charm. It has a more laid-back, sleepy feel than some of the other towns on the lake. It offers the same cobblestone alleyways dotted with trattorias and trinket shops.

But, there is less traffic and more waterfront dining options. Varenna has a more local feel to it and less of a night-time buzz than Bellagio or Menaggio.

Rest your head at Hotel Du Lac whilst in Varenna, and you’re supremely placed for all the town has to offer. Set in an 1823 villa on the shores of Lake Como, it boasts comfortable, understated rooms and attentive service.

A leafy terrace plays host to wine tastings and afternoon aperitifs, and there’s also parking for guests – something not to be sniffed at in Como.

Things to do in Varenna Lake Como

There are lots of fun things to do in Varenna Lake Como. For garden and history lovers there are villas aplenty and for hiking enthusiasts, there are nearby Lake Como hikes.

Here are a few things to do in Varenna Lake Como:

• Visit Villa Monastero. Widely considered one of the best things to do in Varenna. A former nunnery, visitors can walk around the gardens and visit the house museum. Tickets are about 13 euros for adults (children are free) Pre-book tickets online and plan your visit.
• Explore the gardens at Villa Cipressi. If you aren’t fortunate enough to stay at this luxury hotel, you can still enjoy the view from the gardens. Confirm your visit date online before going as the gardens book out for weddings and other events. You can also buy a combined ticket for both Monastero and Cipressi for about 19 euros (children are free) if you plan on visiting both on the same day. Villa Cipressi also has evening yoga classes a couple of times per week open to outside guests (for about 9 euros per class).
• Hike the Sentiero del Viandante, a 45-km trial that winds up along the eastern shore of Lake Como. One of the most famous Lake Como hikes, dating back to Roman times hikers can choose 3 different paths. You will need to be fit and wear comfortable clothing and appropriate hiking shoes. The hikes take anywhere from 2 hours to a full day, depending on which path you choose and how long you stop to take in the incredible views of the lake.
• Immerse yourself in nature at the Orrido di Bellano. Despite the name (orrido translates to horrid/horrific), you will find a breathtaking gorge, filled with aquamarine lagoon water, flanked by steep rock walls. Visitors can traverse a wooden walkway to admire the waterfall. Admission is about 3 euros per person.
• Sample the local wines at In Vinis Veritas, where the knowledgeable sommeliers will help guide you through Viogniers and Pinot Noirs alongside a tasty plate of fresh bruschetta. Use this as your amuse-bouche before dinner at characterful and cozy Il Cavatappi, where the pumpkin gnocchi is the standout dish.

Lake Como Towns: Menaggio

A visit to Menaggio completes the trifecta of Como’s most popular towns, and the ones easily accessed via ferry.

The ferry from Como to Menaggio takes anywhere from 35 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on which ferry you take.

Things to do in Menaggio Lake Como

You’ll find plenty of things to do in Menaggio with its town squares and plenty of patisseries.

Here are just some of the Menaggio activities on offer:

• Take an e-bike tour to Lake Lugano. This is a mini-adventure for those who are fit and used to riding (not appropriate for children under 14). 
• Walk or ride part of the Menaggio-Porlezza railway line. If you don’t want to ride all the way to Lugano via the old retired railway line, walk a section and revert back.
• Visit the historic churches. As you wander through the town you might want to pop in to see Chiesa Di Santa Marta and Chiesa Di San Stefano two quaint little churches near the main square.
• Hike the Senagra Valley. Take a self-guided tour like this one (you will need hiking shoes and a good level of fitness) or book a half or full-day guided tour here that is less intense.
• Play a round of golf in Lake Como. Menaggio and Cadenabbia is Italy’s second-oldest golf course and offers 9 or 18 holes with views over the lake. Book and pay for a tee time here.
• Take a trip down to Villa Carlotta with its expansive gardens and panoramic lookout spots.
• Villa Balbianello should be on your list if history is more your thing. Count Guido Monzino, the last person to live in Villa Balbianello, was the first Italian to lead an expedition to Mount Everest.

Lake Como Towns: Nesso

Nesso is one of Lake Como’s quieter towns. It’s for that reason that you’ll want to seek it out. The pace here is quiet and peaceful – even outside of daily siesta hours. With limited ferry traffic, it is also the perfect spot for a swim. 

A stay at a local Nesso apartment is a taste of true Italian living. Throw open your shutters and listen to the sound of the lapping water just a few feet below.

Things to do in Nesso Lake Como

Nesso is a quieter town in the cluster of Lake Como villages. While there are less organised things to do in Nesso, there are a couple of local activities and sights to see:

• Visit the Ponte della Civera. A gorgeous little Romanesque bridge that has become the most famous bridge in Lake Como. You will need comfortable walking shoes to traverse all the stairs down from the main road.
• See the Orrido di Nesso. Continue past the bridge you will be able to see the famed Orrido di Nesso, a long, narrow waterfall.

Whether you choose the buzz of Varenna or Menaggio or Bellagio or the serenity of Nesso, nothing is too much trouble in any of the Lake Como towns. Choose your pace, switch off your notifications, and kick back with local red wine – you’re in Italy’s playground now.

A Self Drive Tasmania Itinerary

Getting to Tasmania

• Unless you are a local, a Tasmania self-drive holiday will begin as more as a fly-drive Tasmania vacation. Australia’s only island state, flights land daily direct from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
• Hobart airport is about 20 minutes drive from the CBD and rental cars are available for pick up at the airport. Pre-book your rental car before you arrive.

Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park

Often touted as one of Australia’s most iconic mountain regions and home to the world-renowned Overland Track, Cradle Mountain and the surrounding national park is a wilderness experience like no other and must be on any Tasmania itinerary.

Visiting in mid-autumn is highly recommended, when the vibrant colour palette of burnt orange fagus trees contrasts against the pale yellow of the alpine heath and placid wombats lurk round every corner. With daytime temperatures averaging 2°-10°C, it also makes for comfortable walking weather (though don’t forget to pack your thermals.).

There are Cradle Mountain walks to suit most fitness levels. A hike to Marion’s Lookout is a decent 90 minute climb, whilst a trek to the summit beckons to more experienced climbers (note it involves some scrambling up cliff faces). The sedate, family-friendly Dove Lake circuit is perhaps one of Tasmania’s most Instagrammed locations, and is easy to get to on the shuttle bus.  

Your abode of choice has to be Waldheim Cabins, one of the few accomodation to be located inside the national park itself, and with direct access to the walking tracks of Cradle Mountain. Waldheim translates to ‘forest home’ and is exactly that, nestled within a forest of myrtle, pandani and King Billy pine, with resident wombats and wallabies just a few steps from your front door. Facilities are basic – though each cabin is equipped with a heater, essential for the chilly temperatures – making it the perfect opportunity to get ‘off grid’. Bring supplies for a hearty stew, a game of Monopoly and your finest bottle of red, and you’re set.

If, like us, you forget to bring the tea bags, you can grab a cup of the good stuff at Cradle Mountain Lodge. Their snug-cum-dining room is open to visitors every day of the week, and is the perfect place to warm up whilst devouring a book in front of the log fire. For those looking for more luxurious lodgings than the cabins, this is also a great place to spend the night.

Freycinet Scenic Flight

The arid east coast of Tasmania offers a different type of gem in the form of the turquoise bays of Freycinet National Park. Visitors flock to this part of Tasmania for the Bay of Fires, Wineglass Bay and the beaches of Honeymoon Bay, each bordered by white sand and rugged coastline.

Whilst a climb to the top of Mount Amos rewards intrepid hikers with a vista of Wineglass Bay quite like no other, a Freycinet scenic flight is not to be missed. Hop aboard the four seater Cessna, operated by the friendly guys at Freycinet Air and breath in the magic of Friendly Beaches, Maria Island and Dolphin Sands from above. A sunset flight, if you can nab one, is the cherry on the cake.

Be sure to make a detour to Bicheno, a sleepy fishing port located 35km from Coles Bay, the heart of Freycinet National Park. It’s got beautiful beaches as well as some of the best fish and chips in Australia at The Gulch. Order the fluffy cold water cod, creamy succulent oysters and salty chips and enjoy it on the water’s edge as the resident seagulls look on.

Eaglehawk Neck

The furrowed and wild township of Eaglehawk Neck connects the Tasman Peninsula with the Forestier Peninsula, the gateway to historic Port Arthur. Eaglehawk Neck itself is a narrow isthmus, thus making it the perfect location to house convicts in the 1800s as it was easy to patrol and monitor the whereabouts of prisoners. The Peninsula is characterised by beautiful seascapes and dramatic cliff formations; wide expanses of beaches and white crested foam lashing against rocks. Be sure to check out one of the most popular Tasman Peninsula attractions, the Tasman Arch, an impressive geological formation created by wave action over many thousands of years.

For those keen to explore the rugged local area a little deeper, allow some time in your Tasmania itinerary to do one of the Tasman Peninsula walks, such as the picturesque Three Capes Track.

Stay for a few days at The Tin Lantern, an eco-hut nestled in a wood overlooking Pirates Bay, crammed with sailing paraphernalia including flags, maps and bells from owner Nick’s transoceanic voyages. Described as a place for “dreamers, stargazers, hikers, divers, thinkers and surfers”, it’s also a book lovers dream, where tomes jostle next to copies of The New Yorker, Smith Journal and Suitcase. Sleeping with the blinds up in the master bedroom on the first storey is an absolute must – the tall gum trees cast a shadow in the moonlight, the sky is a carpet of stars and, once the sun has risen, you can catch a glimpse of the Tasman Sea – and beyond that, Antarctica – all without leaving your bed. If you are on a 5-star budget, Eaglehawk Pavilions is another Eaglehawk accommodation option that may suit too.

Underwater lovers should make a beeline for Eaglehawk Dive Centre, who offer a range of dives including Cathedral Cave and the historic wreck SS Nord, as well as an opportunity to frolic with curious and playful fur seals.

A Day in Hobart

There’s definitely a sense of things being ‘on the up’ in the state’s capital city. Any Hobart itinerary must feature their famed fine dining restaurants, high end distilleries and sumptuous bakeries making it a foodies paradise.

Plan your visit to arrive on a Saturday and fossick for delights at the Salamanca Markets, where you’ll find local cheeses, oysters, chocolate and the famous Tasman scallop pie. Grab a seafarers lunch at The Whaler, and, if you’ve left enough room, swing by Jackman & McRoss in Battery Point for a sumptuous selection of delectable sweet treats. The area was named after the battery of guns placed on the southern side of the point in 1818 as part of the coastal defences for the deep water port established at Hobart. Today, Battery Point is home to workers cottages, cute bakeries and boutiques.

Many Hobart hotels feature local charm with plenty of rich stories from the past to share. The stunning Henry Jones Art Hotel, located on the water at Hunter Street is the perfect example. A former jam factory, this hotel is steeped in history and combines luxurious touches (such as dual head rainforest shower and plush carpets) with exposed brickwork and modern art.

Hobart is nothing without the behemoth that is MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), an attraction that not only transformed tourism in the town, but gave Australia bragging rights on the international art stage. Leave all of your prejudices about art at the door – MONA is as much an immersive experience as it is an aesthetic delight, dubbed a ‘subversive Disneyland’ by billionaire owner David Walsh and with central themes of sex and death.

You’ll head underground via a network of tunnels and read about each exhibit on your iPhone using MONA’s custom app. There’s also an on-site winery, brewery, plenty of restaurants and five star accommodation. Catch the ferry to MONA from Brook St Pier – if you’re feeling fancy, the Posh Pit is a first class experience in which travellers are plied with as much free champagne (or coffee, if that’s your thing) and canapes they can wolf down in the 25 minute crossing.

Bruny Island Day Trip

Bruny Island is unique in that its actually an island-off-an-island, and is famed for it’s abundance of eateries and the very Insta-worthy isthmus, the Neck lookout. A Bruny Island day trip is well worth the time in your schedule, if you plan properly. We made an error when we visited Bruny. Firstly, by going an an unseasonably-warm Sunday, the crowds were at their peak and arriving at the ferry port at the town of Kettering by mid-morning. Consequently, we queued for two hours just to get a ferry to Bruny Island. That left us with only the same time again on the island before it got dark.

My advice is to get the ferry to Bruny Island early, at around 7 or 8 am. Drive to the southern-most tip of the island and work your way back to the north. Definitely factor in stops at Bruny Island Cheese Co and Get Shucked for succulent, creamy oysters. Of course, don’t miss The Neck, if only for the ‘gram.

 A Breathtaking Tasmania Itinerary

From the white sand and perfectly clear waters on the east coast, to the verdant rainforest of the west and the dramatic igneous rock of Cradle Mountain, a self drive Tasmania itinerary can be as diverse as the island is wild. In a state where 40% of its population live in the capital city, there’s a beautiful solace to be found traversing across the island.

You’ll find wildlife here that you can’t find anywhere else in Australia such as The Tasmanian Devil that is much revered and protected by Tasmanians. The Tasmanian cool climate produces some of the country’s most stunning pinot noir wines, cheeses and oysters.

The Apple Isle makes up for its diminutive size with both beauty and serenity. Whether you make a beeline for the culinary shores of Hobart, the mountainscape of Cradle or the immune-boosting waters of Freycinet National Park, it’s an Australian destination not to be missed.

Cultural Considerations in Samoa

Part of the appeal of visiting an underdeveloped country is that its infrastructure is developed enough to be able to welcome visitors, but without the rampant tourism you see across other French Polynesia locations. Outside of Apia, the only town on the island, you’ll find tribes living the simple life in mud huts with open sides, their pigs and goats roaming free and a stall selling coconuts perched precariously on the roadside. The villagers have few belongings, but they aren’t in poverty. As a local woman explained it to us, work comes low down on the priority list for Samoans – family, community and the Church are the pillars on which they build their livelihoods. Before you begin exploring, get to know the unique customs and etiquette of the Samoan culture; check whether there is a curfew or fee associated with the place you plan to visit and dress appropriately.

Getting Around Samoa

When it comes to getting around Samoa, riding the colourful public bus is a fun way to experience local life. However, renting a car in Apia will give you the freedom to explore further, just ensure you have enough fuel, as petrol stations can be scarce.

There is a Samoa Tourism Information fale (a traditional thatched hut) on Beach Road, should you need a map or some local advice with you arrive in Apia.

Where to Stay in Samoa

Upolu island is the gateway to Samoa and Apia the capital. While there are a number of beautiful beachside resorts in Upolu, we counted just three along the entire South Coast Road, and even then they are less like the luxury resorts you might find in other island tourist destinations and are more likely to be small can Pacific-style buildings rather than high-rise complexes.

Things to Do in Samoa

What you absolutely will find in Samoa is intense natural beauty at every turn; where iridescent seas meet rolling hills and mountains and an emerald carpet of luscious and rich vegetation greets you as far as the eye can see. If you need any more convincing, here are some of the top reasons to visit this South Pacific gem; just a a few of the incredible things to do in Samoa.

Explore Underwater Caves and Ocean Trenches

The To Sua Ocean Trench is the jewel in Samoa’s tourism crown, and it’s easy to see why. This extraordinary swimming hole is the result of a lava eruption causing the land around it to slip away, leaving two large holes connected by a lava tube cave. The bigger of the two is To Sua, and what a mesmerising and magical swimming spot it is.

Set in well-maintained (and managed) gardens, you can make a day trip out of visiting To Sua, setting up in one of the beach fales (traditional wooden beach huts) that border the trench and overlook the ocean. The trench itself is an other-worldly experience – with warm, crystal clear water, you’ll gaze up into the cavernous crater fringed by mossy vegetation and strands of ivy that glisten in the dappled sunlight and pinch yourself. It’s certainly an experience that you won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

If heights aren’t your thing but you still want to cool off, try the Piula Cave Pools, a freshwater oasis on the grounds of the theological college. The water is crystal clear, and although cooler than saltwater, is still a refreshing break from the island humidity. The water flows into a cave a few metres long – swim into the darkness if you dare!

Relax on a Beach all by Yourself

It’s true there isn’t a bad beach on Upolu, but make a special trip to Vavau. Once a bustling tourist resort, Vavau remains deserted since the 2009 tsunami tore down much of the infrastructure and now only palm trees and a few beach fales remain.

Set to the backdrop of volcanic rock and luscious vegetation, Vavau is one of those beaches that has to be seen to be believed.

Aganoa, also known as Black Sand Beach, is another hidden gem. This beach is only accessible down a 3km gravel track, which is undulating in places and only suitable for 4WD vehicles. As is the case for accessing all beaches in Samoa, you pay the Chief your fee ($10WST per person (about $AUD5.50/$USD3.80) in the village before embarking on your off-road journey to find a beach that is deserted, pristine and devastatingly beautiful.

This beach reminded me a lot of the vast expanse that is Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland, Australia (only minus the threat of hungry crocs) with dense vegetation bordering the beach and fringed with majestic palm trees that soar high into the sky. The whole of Upolu is protected by a reef making swimming here safe and enjoyable, but do watch out for currents and a break at this beach. If you’re a strong swimmer, take your snorkel, as we later read that snorkelling at this spot is out of this world.

Meet the Warm and Welcoming Samoan People

It’s true that neighbouring Fiji is often ranked one of the happiest countries on earth, and certainly, the people of the South Pacific have generosity in spades. Traversing the island by car, you’ll pass many a hard-working Samoan, all who will raise their hand in greeting and smile broadly. English is widely spoken by most in the more built-up areas, and the service we encountered whilst dining out was outstanding.

Interactions with the locals is also special. At Vavau, we were the only tourists on the beach, sunbathing to the backdrop of quiet labour as a local tribe built a new fale. A few steps away a mother and her brood of children were busy foraging for food, with the children all too happy to pose for a photo, giggling and jostling for the spotlight as soon as I trained my lens on them.

As a gesture of goodwill, I offered some coins to the family and asked permission before taking a photo. Tipping is not widespread in Samoa, but appreciated by tribes when taking photos or interacting with them on their land.

The Diving and Snorkelling in Samoa is World-Class

Samoa is one of the most unexplored places on earth for diving and snorkelling, and yet one of the most biologically diverse. Turtles, manta rays, eagle rays and fish of all shapes and colours are plentiful when underwater in Samoa.

We spent the day diving with Samoa Dive & Snorkel and can’t recommend them enough. Justin and Ty have 20 years of experience between them and are professional, reassuring (for a first-time diver over here) and more than willing to share their vast local knowledge about the island. Their philosophy is centred around taking their clients to the spots not frequented by tourists, and the resulting day trip means you’ll find yourself the only people deep in the heart of the Samoan jungle, using a dive weight to crack open your coconut at morning tea before sinking into the warm and crystal clear water to begin your day of diving.  

If you’re going to spend time underwater in Samoa, these guys should be your only choice. In fact, they’re rated number one for diving by TripAdvisor in the whole of Samoa, and the only operator to hold a PADI 5 star rating.

With regular flights arriving in Apia, incredible landscapes, welcoming people and so many adventurous things to do in Samoa, it’s time to push this South Pacific gem to the top of your must-travel list.

Discovering the Best Wineries in Margaret River

Getting to Margaret River

The nearest airport is in Perth (search flights to Perth). From Perth, Margaret River is about a three-hour drive. There are several routes you can choose if you are driving yourself. Otherwise, South West Coach Lines runs direct coaches from the airport or pick up from Perth city centre.

As the Margaret River region is only connected by two main roads, getting around can be tricky. When we both wanted to enjoy a drink with dinner we employed the services of a ‘Designated Driver’, who comes to your location and drive your car home back to your property. Prices start at around $AUD70, depending on the distance travelled.

Margaret River Wineries

You simply can’t go to the Margaret River and not visit a winery. In fact, driving up and down Caves Road, one of two main thoroughfares, you’d be hard-pushed not to count over a dozen wineries in any 5-kilometre stretch. With space in abundance in the Margaret River wine region, almost all of the vineyards are set amongst breathtaking acreage, with sweeping vistas across the vines and beautifully tended rose gardens.

Whether you’re a red drinker or a white, Margaret River caters to both; famed for its Cabernet Sauvignon and its chardonnay, thanks to the Mediterranean, dry climate. In fact, whilst the region produces only 3% of Australia’s total wine, it commands 20% of the premium market, indicative of the quality of the wines being produced in this small corner of paradise.

Many of the wineries, as well as being some of the most outstanding wine producers in Australia also offer stunning Modern Australian cuisine, with impressive degustation menus giving the option to pair your wines to your chosen dish.

Wine connoisseur James Halliday alludes to the ‘Golden Triangle’ of vineyards in the Willyabrup region, and this is where you’ll find three of my stand-out favourites – Voyager Wine Estate, Leeuwin Estate and Vasse Felix.

3 of the Best Wineries in Margaret River: Voyager Wine Estate

The first thing you’ll notice when you approach Voyager is their gargantuan Australian flag. At 15mx7.5m and mounted on a 30m high flag pole, it’s rumoured to be the largest in the country. Vineyard Manager Linda explained that when Parliament House heard about the size of Voyager’s flag, they had their own altered to ensure it remained the biggest in the land. The building at Voyager is inspired by the Cape Dutch-style farmsteads of South Africa, with a manor house surrounded by a series of outbuildings and walled gardens.

The rose gardens here are exquisitely kept by four full-time gardeners, and retain the Cape Dutch influence with hints of European plantings. Roses are used at the end of vineyards not only for their aesthetics but as an early warning system to indicate if vines are experiencing a pest infestation.

We took the Voyager Estate Tour, joining Linda and another couple in the Estate’s Land Rover to hear about the fermenting process, viticulture and we were also able to gain access to the vast underground cellar Voyager built in 2013, to house its reserve stock.

Our time here was rounded off by a delectable degustation with matching wine flights. Menus change depending on the season, but example dishes include venison with macadamias, wagyu rump and eggplant, swimmer crab and washed down with a goat’s cheesecake with fig and vanilla.

3 of the Best Wineries in Margaret River: Leeuwin Estate

The family-owned Leeuwin Estate is set on breathtaking grounds, with manicured lawns and an impressive restaurant, whose bifold doors and domed skylights give you the best view of the forest of karri trees below.

Utilising an ever-popular ‘paddock-to-plate’ menu and always with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, eating here is a luxurious affair made even better when paired with the Estate’s library wines.

The Leeuwin Estate produces three ‘classes’ of wine – Art Series, Prelude, and Siblings. The coveted Art Series is Leeuwin’s most opulent and age-worthy wine, whose bottles are unique in being adorned with paintings commissioned by leading contemporary Australian artists.  

This is where we discovered the illustrious Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon, which still remains up there as my favourite red. Notes of blueberry and chocolate mean it’s more like sipping a decadent dessert whilst retaining the easy-to-drink flow of a good red wine. It’s rated by the pros too, with the Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon being recognised internally as a Decanter Top 50 Wine and a James Sucking and US Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wine. If you’re a fan of big, luxurious red wines, make a beeline for Leeuwin Estate.

3 of the Best Wineries in Margaret River: Vasse Felix

I had to include Vasse Felix, Margaret River’s founding wine estate which was established in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, the man credited with bringing winemaking to the region.

Vasse Felix boasts some of the best wine in Margaret River and Western Australia for that matter, thanks to a unique ‘hands off’ philosophy to winemaking, achieving ‘fruit quality through plant health, and plant health through soil health’.

Next to the oldest vineyards, you’ll find the breathtaking Vasse Felix restaurant, with architecture inspired by new and old, made from local materials and covered in Instagram-worthy ivy. You can pop into the Tasting Room for a glass of wine – I recommend the Heytesbury Chardonnay – peruse the Art Gallery, dine in the restaurant or visit the wonderfully atmospheric wine cellar, which houses bottles as far back as 1967 and feels very much like being in a post-war bunker.

With gorgeous art sculptures set amongst the well-kept gardens, feasting on a picnic with a bottle of Vasse’s reserve Chardonnay is not a bad way to spend an afternoon. You can stock up on picnic supplies at Margaret River Gourmet Merchant, where you’ll find oodles of cheese, chutney, gourmet crackers and olive oils. Find them in Cowaramup (known locally as Cowtown – you’ll soon see why).

Margaret River Wine Tasting Etiquette

Many, in fact, almost all of the vineyards offer their tasting services for free, in the hope that any subsequent purchases made will offset the cost of providing tasting bottles.

Some, such as Cullen Wines, do ask for a small fee ($AUD5) to sample some of their finer reserves, which is refundable upon purchase. Of course, there are going to be wines that don’t take your fancy, and it’s okay to be selective.

But, as so many of these vineyards are family run, and like so many small businesses have staff to pay to pick the grapes, to harvest the wine, bottle it and market it, to forage for the food served so beautifully in their restaurants, I implore you not to go on a freebie wine crawl.

Buying something from an independent creator lines the pockets of those who created it in the first place, not a millionaire investor. Reward the hard yards put into the art of winemaking and enjoy your tasting, but don’t take advantage.

The region is also well set up for sending cases of wine interstate, so if you’ve not enough luggage allowance there’s still a way of getting your favourite Cabernet Sauvignon to the comfort of your own home for you to enjoy.

It’s abundantly clear why Margaret River has cemented its reputation as one of the premier wine destinations in the world, and a beautiful one at that.

Consider it next time you need to fill up the wine cellar. You’ll return a few kilos heavier, but sated, relaxed and maybe just a little tipsy.
