50+ of the Best Things to Do in Bali with Kids

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia for families, Bali promises an action-packed family holiday.

Kids of all ages will love their time on the island.

Whether they are spending the day at a beach, relaxing in the resort pool, or doing one of the many Bali adventure activities on offer, Bali is somewhere families return to again and again.

1. Spend the Morning at Waterbom Bali

One of the best things to do in Bali with kids, small children, and adults alike will love the water slides at Waterbom Bali in Kuta

Waterbom is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm (except Nyepi).

Try to set aside a full day for Waterbom, as there really is a lot to keep you entertained.

The best time to visit is of course from opening until lunchtime or during the afternoon to avoid the harsh midday sun.

Also, remember not to book a big night out with the kids after a visit to this water park as they should be pretty tired after a long day in the Bali heat.

2. Go to the Bali Bird Park

The Bali Bird Park is home to 1300 birds from 250 species. Wander the park, pose with a macaw, or watch a live show.

You may also get to see a Komodo Dragon during your visit.

The Bali Bird Park is about 25 minutes from Ubud, Sanur, or Denpasar and about 50 minutes from Seminyak, Canggu, or Nusa Dua.

The park is open daily from 9 am to 5 30 pm. Tickets are about AUD$42($US27.50 each) and you’ll need about 2 to 3 hours to explore.

3. Try Some Fun Water Sports

Spending the day trying out different water sports is a fun activity for the whole family.

4. Visit the Kuta Art Market

No trip to the island is complete without a visit to at least one Bali market. The Kuta Art Market is pretty iconic.

It’s a great place to wander around and pick up some Bali souvenirs.

This is also the best way to practice your haggling skills and bargain the price down.

Open 7 am to 8 pm.

5. Do a Seminyak Eat Street Food Tour

Feast on Bali’s best street food with a Seminyak Eat Street tour.

Try a traditional Soto Ayam, Babi Guling, and Joss Milk (a local energy drink) among other local favorites while learning about Indonesian food traditions and the influences from the rest of the region.

This is a nighttime tour so would best suit families with older children or teens (children under 6 not permitted).

There are also no ‘kids meals’ provided so they will have to have an adventurous palette.

6. Experience an Iconic Tanah Lot Sunset

You’ll need to plan your visit to Tanah Lot as it will take about half a day including the drive and exploring.

Tanah Lot is about an hour’s drive from Ubud or 1.5 hours from Kuta. You’ll want to spend 1 – 2 hours there.

Tanah Lot is open from 7 am to 5 pm ever y day. Foreigners cannot enter the temple itself. But, most enjoy visiting the temple at dusk to capture an iconic Tanah Lot sunset photo.

If you are doing a sunset tour or visit, book into one of these Canggu restaurants or a beach club for dinner afterward.

The sun sets at about 6 pm in Bali, so you should get the kids to dinner by about 7. 30 pm.

7. Spend the Day at a Bali Day Spa

Day spas are synonymous with the relaxing family holidays offered in Bali.

No matter what part of the island you stay on you will be able to find a great Bali day spa to spend a morning.

We love booking into a day spa on a rainy afternoon. It’s a lovely way to spend some time relaxing and you don’t feel like you are missing any of the outdoor activities Bali has to offer.

8. Do a Balinese Cooking Course

There are so many ways to do a cooking course in Bali. Most hotels offer adds ons like an onsite cooking course.

There are also lots of half-day tours or full-day tours that include Balinese cooking courses.

9. Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Visitors to the Ubud Monkey Forest walk a pathway through the 30-acre forest to view the four temples on-site.

They include Pura Dalem or a temple to worship Lord Shiva, Holy Water Temple, and Cremation Temples.

They also see the statues, and of course, see some of the more than 600 monkeys that live in the monkey forest.

The monkeys in the monkey forest are not shy. They will and do climb on visitors (one of the reasons this isn’t my favorite tourist activity).

There are specific guidelines outlined on the Sanctuary website to follow when interacting with the monkeys.

I wouldn’t recommend you to visit the park with young children.

10. Visit the Ubud Art Market

The Ubud Art Market is a fun family activity in the Ubud town center. The permanent market is the perfect place to buy a few Bali souvenirs.

Visit one of Ubud’s great coffee shops or healthy cafes afterward for afternoon tea out of the humidity.

The Ubud Art Market is open from 10 am to 5 pm most days.

11. Watch an Ubud Palace Legong Dance Performance

Once the residence of the royal family, the Ubud Palace hosts dance performances on its grounds nightly.

A wonderful thing to do with kids in Ubud, the cultural performances are beautiful and entertaining.

Legong and Barong dances are held on different nights with all shows scheduled to start at around 7.30 pm.

Tickets are about IDR 100,000 each.

Make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes early to get a seat as they get very busy during peak season.

12. Try Some Tasty Babi Guling

Try traditional Babi Guling or suckling pig. One of the best-known Bali street food options, the slow-roasted pig is served at some street food restaurants and warungs.

It is also made by Balinese locals for special occasions or gatherings.

If you are in Ubud, the most convenient place to try Babi Guling is at Warung Ibu Oka on Jalan Tegal Sari.

This is not a fine dining experience. You will be eating outside with the locals. Expect a plate of suckling pork with vegetables, sides, and sauces.

Better yet, ask the locals where they recommend you try Babi Guling in a more traditional (less touristy) setting.

13. Go White Water Rafting in Ubud

Older children might like to go white water rafting. I was very pumped up to try white water rafting while visiting Ubud. 

While it wasn’t completely still, there weren’t many rapids to speak of which could make it a great family activity in Ubud.

Spending the morning rafting down the famous Ayung River in Ubud is such a great way to experience Bali in a whole new and exciting way.

I went with Mega Rafting but there are a number of companies that offer white water rafting tours in Ubud.

14. Take a Bali VW Tour

A VW tour was a super fun way to get around Bali.

I was traveling with a group from Kuta to Bali, so we drove in convoy through the busy streets of Kuta and watched as the scenery changed, becoming awash with green as we made our way to the jungle in Ubud.

This is a super fun thing to do in Bali with kids who don’t need car seats (so about 7 years and up). Children under 2 aren’t permitted.

There are full-day tours that will take you up to Mount Batur and through local villages.

15. Do a Bali Yoga Class

Bali yoga classes are the stuff of yogi dreams. From the whimsical setting of Desa Seni in Seminyak to flows on the cliffs in Uluwatu, and classes at the iconic Yoga Barn in Ubud. There is a setting to roll out your mat that will suit any yoga starter.

While a Bali yoga class probably wouldn’t be suitable for young kids, older children would definitely enjoy the experience.

Make sure you call the studio you are hoping to drop into first to enquire about any age minimums.

For those staying at family-friendly Bali hotels, there are often very inclusive classes scheduled for the morning.

You could always consider booking a private yoga class for the whole family with a local instructor too.

16. Take a Scenic Bali Cycling Tour

A Bali cycling tour will be a highlight of any family trip to Bali.

We did a downhill bike tour in Bali from Ubud.

Starting our day by drinking coffee with a view over Mount Batur we wound our way around through local villages, and rice fields and enjoyed a traditional Balinese lunch.

This type of tour would suit families with kids from about 10 years and up.

The cycling itself is not difficult and mostly downhill.

But, there were sections (like winding through the dirt roads behind villages or navigating the rice paddies that were a little tricky.

17. Visit a Bali Tourism Village

One of the best things to do in Bali with kids has to be to visit a Bali ‘tourism village’.

While a trip to Bali with kids can often mean time spent in waterparks, resorts, and restaurants, visiting a local village is a unique way to experience the Balinese culture.

A few of the ‘tourism villages’ in Bali are:

• Tenganan Pegringsingan Tourism Village (East Bali)
• Carangsari Village (Ubud)
• Mas Wood Carving Village (near Ubud)

Hire a private driver and visit some of the small tourist villages or book a full tour.

Expect to pay a donation on entry to the villages.

It is important to ensure you remain respectful of the village locals and their customs so please remember to dress modestly too.

And, don’t forget to buy some of their wares or souvenirs to support the village.

18. Tour the Green School Ubud Campus

Fascinated by the award-winning Green School in Ubud?

Why not take a tour and let the kids see the differences between this amazing open-air, bamboo-constructed campus and their own schools back home?

Warning: your kids may want to relocate to Bali once they’ve seen this wonderful campus up close.

For those interested in a more sustainable model of architecture, this offers a bit of an educational experience too.

Bookings for Green School Tours require bookings and aren’t offered year-round. So, contact their office directly when planning your family trip to Bali to secure a spot.

The campus gets very humid so dress accordingly and take hats and water bottles.

This tour isn’t suitable for prams or people with mobility restrictions.

19. Do a Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

If you are visiting Bali with kids who are a bit older, a Mount Batur sunrise hike is an amazing family activity.

This hike is not for the unfit or for small children. You will start hiking in the dark to make it to the viewing point at the sunrise breaks.

So, if you are a fit family with teenagers this could be the perfect Bali activity.

There are lots of operators offering Mount Batur sunrise hikes – some in combination with hot springs visits or breakfast.

20. Do an Instagram Photo Tour

Want to build up your Bali Instagram highlight reel?

Book a Bali photography tour. You can tick off all of those must-visit Bali sites and snap away.

This full-day Bali tour is a great way to cover a lot of Bali tourist sites very quickly if you only have a few days on the island.

Expect to cover some of Bali’s best Instagram spots like Lempuyang Temple the Gates of Heaven and the Inst-famous Jungle Swing.

This tour would suit pre-teens and above as there is a lot of walking and some rocky terrain.

21. Learn to Surf in Bali

A haven for surfers from around the world Bali welcomes beginner to expert board riders.

There are many places to learn to surf in Bali.

Padang Padang Beach right (up the coast from Uluwatu), Kuta, and Canggu are some of the best places to learn to surf.

But, there are surf schools and surf camps in Bali all over the island.

This is one of the best things to do in Bali with kids who can swim confidently.

The whole family can get involved. Book a group class or a private surf lesson just for your family.

22. Visit Some Incredible Bali Waterfalls

Visit some of Bali’s famous waterfalls for an adventurous day out in Bali with kids.

Whether you do a mini-waterfall tour with a private guide or add on a visit to one of two of Bali’s most beautiful waterfalls, this really is a lovely way to see a different side of Bali.

These are a few of the most popular Bali waterfalls to visit:

Gitgit Waterfall

Gitgit waterfall is probably the most famous Bali waterfall.

It takes about 2 hours to get to Gitgit waterfall from Seminyak, so get on the road early to beat the crowds. This is a popular tourist attraction.

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan Waterfall is in Tegenungan Kemenuh village, south of Ubud, and is often added to any Ubud tour itinerary (or request it).

It costs a couple of dollars to enter and extra for lockers, toilets, and parking.

They are open from 6.30 am til 6 pm.

Try to visit first thing in the morning or early evening to avoid the harsh sun and the crowds. These are one of the busiest waterfalls in Bali.

There are almost 200 steps to climb at this waterfall, so this is an activity to fit, mobile kids.

Tukad Cepung Waterfall

About an hour from Sanur or just over an hour from Ubud, Tukad Cepung Waterfall is in East Bali.

A unique cave-style waterfall, book a day tour to visit Tukad Cepung Waterfall.

If you are staying in Sanur, you could ask to visit the Tegenungan Waterfall on the way through as well.

This Bali day tour includes a visit to an Insta-famous Bali Swing, rice terraces, a tourist village, and a coffee plantation as well. So, it’s a good way to tick off some Bali must-dos in a day if you are short on time.

23. Spend the Day at a Bali Beach Club

Bali Beach clubs have come a long way in the last couple of decades.

They are now highly curated mega catering to the entire family. You can safely plan to spend an entire day at a Bali beach club. 

Many have pools, dining, bars, and endless entertainment options for both adults and kids.

24. Go Snorkelling off the Nearby Islands

The dry season in Bali (May to October) offers calmer waters for snorkeling and diving.

If you have the time in your Bali itinerary, consider a day trip to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan to snorkel.

25. See a Devdan Show 

Another great cultural activity to do on your Bali family vacation is to see a Devdan Show.

A fun way for older children to experience the Balinese culture, a Devdan Show is a live stage performance.

You can see a Devdan show at the Nusa Dua Theatre a few nights a week.

26. Visit the Bali Safari Park

Showcasing more than 1000 animals, if you like animal parks, this may be something you are keen to explore.

Visitors can get up close to elephants, tigers, and more than 120 species of animals.

27. Get Wet at Splash Waterpark

Splash Waterpark at Finns Recreation Club in Canggu is filled with water slides, an aqua playground, and amenities to fill your family’s day.

With a designated Splash playground for young children and plenty of slightly hairier slides for older children and adults, there is something to keep the whole family entertained.

Swim vests can be hired for the day and towels and sun loungers are included in your ticket.

Covered cabanas and days beds can be booked at an extra cost.

28. Swim with Manta Rays

Get up close and personal on a swim with Manta Rays. The majestic mantas can be found all year round in Bali.

Book a snorkeling day tour that includes stops at Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan for the best chance at a sighting.

29. Go Trampolining at Bounce Bali

One of the best things to do in Bali on a rainy day, Bounce Bali is an indoor trampoline center elevated.

Located inside Finn’s Recreation Club, Bounce is also air conditioned should you need to cool off after a morning in the Bali humidity.

Open 10 am to 8 pm Sunday to Thursday and 10 am to 9 pm Friday and Saturday.

30. Go Horse Riding

There are so many options for horse riding in Bali, these days. From sunrise to sunset rides, beach or mountain, there are Bali horse riding tours aplenty.

However, if your kids aren’t proficient riders, start with a riding lesson. This is a truly unique thing to do in Bali with kids.

The Bali Equestrian Centre is a world-class facility that offers private lessons and group lessons, pony rides, and even pony riding camps for children.

31. Attend the Bali Kite Festival

If you are visiting Bali in August, add the Bali Kite Festival to your itinerary.

This annual celebration sees hundreds of giant kites take to the sky above the east coast of Padanggalak, just north of Sanur.

There are a number of events including local youth competitions as part of the Bali Kite Festival.

But, the main days are the 26th to the 28t of August as part of the Sanur Village Festival.

The beloved spectacle is held annually with kite-flying a tradition to thank the Gods for a rich harvest.

This is absolutely one of the most unique things you can do in Bali and the kids will love it.

32. Let the Kids Get Their Hair Braided

Is there anything that screams ‘Bali holiday’ more than kids with their hair braided?

There are little braiding stalls at most markets and plenty of hawkers around offering their braiding services.

The prices vary and may depend on how good your negotiating skills are.

But, if you think your kids can sit still long enough, this is always a favorite Bali activity for kids.

33. Go Ten Pin Bowling

A great idea when it rains in Bali, take the whole family bowling.

Located at Finns Recreation Club in Canggu, book a lane at Strike Ten Pin Bowling.

For about IDR95,000 per person, enjoy a little healthy competition and some snacks afterward. Suitable for ages 3 and up.

34. Go Shopping at the Factory Outlets

If your teenagers are mad for surfwear and keen to go shopping, head to the Bali factory outlets for some affordable retail therapy.

There are a number of shopping outlets in Bali, from Kuta to Seminyak, Ubud, Legian, and Denpasar.

You’ll find brands like Nike, Levis, Rip Curk, Oakley, and 69 Slam (my hubby’s favorite board shorts).

Check with your hotel for the outlets closest to your hotel. Then, if you are really keen you could still book a driver for a morning of shopping.

35. Spend the day at a Kids Club

I highly recommend you choose a family resort in Bali with a kids club. I mention a few here.

The beauty of visiting Bali with kids is that many hotels cater to children as well as adults, so kids’ clubs are part of the package.

With anything from in-house splash parks to arts, crafts, and cultural activities, there is so much to entertain young children at a kids club during their holiday.

This will leave you more time to explore the local area or check in to a spa for some time out.

36. Eat Fish on Jimbaran Beach

Eating with your feet in the sand on Jimbaran Beach is a Bali must-do for first-timers.

Jimbaran Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Kuta or Seminyak (depending on traffic).

The Jimbaran Beach cafes all sit on the sand along the beach with outdoor tables on the sand so visitors can eat right at the water’s edge.

You will go and choose your fresh fish or seafood and they will cook it for you right then and there and serve it up.

Enjoy your meal as the sun sets and the kids can play on the sand afterward.

37. Enjoy a Kecak Show at the Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple or Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of the most important Balinese temples.

The sea temple sits on a cliff above a 70-meter drop to the beach and ocean below.

The Balinese Hindus believe that the powers of the Hindu Trinity are all present here.

Said to have been built by a Majapahit monk, it was later expanded and is now a popular tourist spot in Uluwatu.

A cliff pathway leads to the temple, so be mindful of this if you are considering bringing young children.

You will also encounter monkeys, so leave any valuables or food in the car.

The entrance fee to the Uluwatu Temple is about IDR 30,000 per person for adults and IDR 15,000 for children.

The best time to visit is in the afternoon, just before sundown.

A guide is recommended as organizing transport to and from Uluwatu can be tricky.

38. Learn Balinese Dance

Another fun thing to do in Bali if it’s raining is to learn Balinese Dance. While there might be a few giggles and some challenging choreography for some, this is a great way for the family to immerse themselves in the culture together.

The Yoga Barn in Ubud offers Balinese dance classes on Monday evenings.

The ARMA Museum and Resort offers 2-hour long classes (as well as many other cultural activities).

39. Go Boarding at the Bali Wake Park

Head to the state-of-the-art Cable Park Lake for a day of fun out on the water.

One of the best things to do in Bali for teens, Bali Wake Park has a full menu of water activities to suit all levels.

When it comes to boarding there is wakeboarding, kneeboarding, waterskiing, and skurfing on the cables which have been designed to cater to kids and beginners.

There is also a giant Aqualand fun park with obstacles on the water, a waterfront cafe, and a bar with an infinity pool.

So, everyone will find a way to relax at the park.

Bali Wake Park is in Benoa, about 15 minutes from Sanur and 20 minutes from Kuta or Seminyak.

It is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. Entry is free and then you simply buy your activity tickets at the park.

40. See the Famous Bali Rice Terraces

It’s hard to see an advertisement for Bali without a photo of the stunning green rice terraces included.

They really are a must-see when on the island, especially for those looking for the best photo spots in Bali.

January through March are the best time to visit the Bali rice terraces. This is simply because they are lush and green at the end of the rainy season.

Tegalalang Rice Terraces are the most famous (you’ll recognize them from “Eat, Pray, Love”) and are often very crowded.

Other rice terraces in Bali worth visiting are:

• Jatiluwih rice terraces in Bali’s Tabanan Regency (known as Bali’s rice bowl) are about 2 hours drive from Kuta.
• Rendang rice terraces in East Bali

Be prepared to pay an entrance fee for each of the popular rice terraces.

The easiest way to visit is to book a tour which will usually include seeing the rice terraces and other activities like visiting a coffee plantation or other well-known Bali attractions.

41. Visit the Pura Tirta Empul Water Temple

The Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple is about 3o minutes north of  Ubud, in the village of Manukaya, in central Bali.

This is a sacred site as the Balinese Hindu community believes the water from the natural springs here has been created and blessed by the God Indra. They, therefore, have the potential to purify.

A visit to this incredible complex is definitely a Bali bucket list item which of course means it can get very busy during peak season.

You will need a good hour or more once you reach the temple as the site is expansive and you will likely be greeted by crowds.

The temple is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.

The entrance fee is about IDR 50,000 for an adult and IDR25,000 for a child.

42. Eat Traditional Indonesian Fare at a Warung

Made’s Warung has long been a favorite of ours since we started coming to Bali more than 2 decades ago.

Kids will love an easy Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, or other simple Indonesian dishes for dinner.

Just make sure you are clear on whether your kids can handle chili, so they can adjust accordingly.

43. Do a Rice Field Walk

If you are visiting Bali with teens who are happy to go out and get active, consider a morning rice field walk.

These walks are one of the best things to do in Ubud if you are staying in the village or nearby.

Work your way through the list or just start with the Sari Organik walk

Sari Organik Walk

Just 10 minutes from the Ubud Art Market, the Sari Organik walk is a great activity to do in the morning for breakfast before wandering the markets.

The walk is about 3.5 kilometers long and takes about an hour, depending on whether you stop at any of the cute restaurants (like the namesake Sari Organik) along the way.

The Penanstenan Rice Field Walk

About 4 kilometers out of Ubud you’ll find Penanstenan village. This walk starts at the north end of the village and is a quieter walk without the warungs and cafes along the Sari walk.

It finishes at Terracotta Restaurant at Mathis Retreat Ubud where you can enjoy lunch with a striking view over the rice terraces.

44. Visit the Ubud Water Palace

The Saraswati Palace or Ubud Water Palace is located in the heart of Ubud (behind Starbucks).

A popular Instagram photo spot in Ubud, many will recognize the stunning stonework rising up either side of the temple gates.

With ponds of pink lotus flowers on either side of the entry pathway, it creates a perfectly framed photo.

The best time to visit is in the evening when it is cooler and there is a Balinese dance performance (most nights except Friday).

Make sure you dress appropriately for the palace with covered knees and shoulders.

Entry to the palace grounds is free. The dance performance will cost extra and you just need to buy your tickets there.

45. Learn to Scuba Dive

If you are traveling with teenagers, why not get your Padi accreditation as a family in an idyllic location?

46. Have a Floating Breakfast

The Best Time to Visit Bali

The dry season in Bali is from April to October.

The best time to visit Bali is between May and August with the high season in Bali considered April to August.

The island gets particularly busy during the Australian school holidays in April and June/July, Christmas, and New Year.

The wet season in Bali is from November to March. January to March is the low season in Bali. If you can put up with late afternoon showers (or more) every day, this is definitely the cheapest time to visit the island.

Check that your travel dates don’t fall during any of the public holidays in Indonesia or you may be restricted in what you can do around the island.

How Long Should You Stay in Bali?

Ideally, a family trip to Bali should be 7 to 10 days, or longer.

This gives you enough time to stay in one or two different parts of Bali. It will also give you and your kids time to get over any jet lag from the journey over.

The great thing about Bali is you can get a feel for Bali in 3-4 days if you only have time for a short trip.

But I would highly recommend booking one, very central, family resort in Bali for that time.

Also, hire a driver or book Bali day tours so you can explore stress-free and get the most out of your family holiday.

If you are coming from the United States or Europe or somewhere a bit further away, try to give yourself time to spend a little longer as there are so many things to do in Bali.

Which Part of Bali is Best For Families?

The island of Bali has a destination that will appeal to every type of family. There are busy areas overflowing with crowds, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. 

But, there are also off-the-beaten-track villages or villa resorts where you can switch off and just spend your days on one of Bali’s beautiful beaches with your kids. Of course, there are also places in Bali with a little of both.

You simply need to decide the type of holiday you are planning, consider the age and interests of your kids, and book your Bali accommodation and tours accordingly.

There are a number of different main tourist areas in Bali that are good for families.

Each area offers something unique in terms of activities, setting, and entertainment. I have included a summary of each below.

The best places in Bali for families to stay are Nusa Dua, Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Canggu, Jimbaran Bay, Ubud, Uluwatu, and Sanur.

Nusa Dua

If you are looking for a really relaxed Bali resort holiday, Nusa Dua is a great place.

Nusa Dua is on the southeastern tip of Bali, about 10 to 15 minutes from the airport.

You’ll find large luxury resorts in Nusa Dua that have everything from restaurants, spas, kids’ clubs, shopping, and a gorgeous beach area.

The best part is there’s no need to leave the area if you aren’t up for exploring.

Kuta

Kuta is the busy part, suitable for those planning a family trip to Bali with a good dose of nightlife and daily activities.

The good thing about Kuta is that there are always plenty of things to do for kids and adults. But, be prepared for the crowds.

Legian

Legian is the stretch of the beach north of Kuta stretching to Seminyak. While more expensive than Kuta, Legian is generally more affordable than Seminyak.

Popular with families and surfers alike, it’s a great spot for those looking for a more low-key area than its noisy neighbors.

Legian has some good-value family resorts and great Bali beach clubs to keep you entertained during your stay.

Seminyak

With a good balance of buzz, beach clubs, and great shopping, Seminyak has a little of everything.

This is a great area to stay in on your first time in Bali as it’s right in the center of the action.

Book a hotel near the main road with Seminyak restaurants within reach so you can walk everywhere and avoid having to sit in infamously bad Bali traffic

Canggu

The hipster hub of Bali, Canggu is a popular neighborhood for surfers, digital nomads, and families alike.

Slightly quieter than Kuta or Seminyak there are good local Canggu restaurants and family-friendly beach clubs in this area.

For those who still want to party down after a day spent coffee crawling or surfing during the day, there are some fun bars too.

Jimbaran Bay

Jimbaran Bay is on the west coast of Bali about 20 minutes south of Kuta Beach.

Jimbaran Beach is well-known for its seafood restaurants where guests can choose their own catch and have it cooked in front of them and dine with their toes in the sand.

This area is a bit of a blend of a small local fishing community with a few luxury hotels in the surrounding areas set overlooking the ocean.

Jimbaran is a good place to spend a few days if you want some peace and quiet and to unwind in a resort.

Ubud

Escape to the jungle and the famous rice fields of Ubud.

Often touted as the spiritual center of Bali, nature lovers will also appreciate Ubud.

Ubud offers a calmer family trip to Bali with so many things to do from outdoor excursions to village visits and wildlife experiences.

Ubud also has some of the best hotels in Bali set amidst the trees and rice terraces.

Uluwatu

If you’re back in Bali for the second time spending some time in the Bukit offers a lovely contrast to the often chaotic Kuta or Seminyak.

Sanur

For a much quieter family trip to Bali with some local experiences on your doorstep Sanur is a good option.

There are a number of Sanur hotels and family villas to call home where you can relax during the day.

Or head out to the local markets, artisanal stores or try your hand at Balinese cooking.

What to Pack for a Family Trip to Bali

Packing for a family trip to Bali is pretty simple.

You need summer clothes that are comfortable in the humidity like loose maxi dresses, cotton shorts and t-shirts for kids, and comfortable sandals or water shoes.

Here are a few other important things to throw in your suitcase:

• Sunhats
• Sunglasses with UV protection
• Reef-Safe Sunscreen (it can be very expensive on the island)
• Deet-free mosquito repellant and Mosquito Repellant patches. Most hotels should have mosquito nets provided too. Dengue fever is present in Bali.
• Pool floatation devices. If your child needs a safety vest for swimming, bring it from home.
• Medications in case the dreaded Bali belly hits (we carry Buscopan, Mintec, Imodium, Kids panadol, and broad-spectrum antibiotics – please seek your own medical advice as this is just our personal travel list.)
• If you are traveling in the rainy or shoulder season make sure you pack raincoats for the kids. Otherwise, you should be able to buy ponchos, umbrellas, or raincoats at the markets.

Is the Food in Bali Safe to Eat?

Bali is a food lover’s paradise. With some incredible fine dining, traditional Indonesian fare (like personal favorites Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng), a huge choice of healthy Bali cafes to high-end bars.

Bali food is great, until in some cases, it’s not. Once upon a time, ‘Bali belly’ was simply par for the course with a trip to Indonesia.

Bali belly can be caused by eating food or drinks contaminated by bacteria.

But, these days there are a few of the best things you can do to try to avoid getting Bali belly:

1. Never drink tap water. Only drink from sealed bottles of water. This includes when brushing your teeth. Also beware of ordering smoothies, juices, and cold drinks that may have water added.
2. There used to be a blanket rule to never order ice too. Most upmarket bars and beach clubs will serve clean ice. I personally still avoid having ice in my drinks.
3. Ensure your food is hot, fresh, and cooked through.
4. Beware street food that isn’t cooked fresh in front of you.
5. Avoid buffets where food may not be fresh or may have been sitting in the heat for extended periods.
6. Avoid any unpasteurized dairy products.

How Much Does a Family Trip to Bali Cost?

Bali has unfortunately become one of the more expensive destinations in South East Asia.

While there is no set cost for a family trip to Bali there are several factors that will impact how much a family trip to Bali will cost:

• Whether you are luxury travelers or budget travelers,
• Where you stay in Bali,
• What is included in your accommodation packages
• What activities you would like to do in Bali? Obviously, the more activities you do outside your resort, the more your Bali holiday will cost.
• Whether you need additional care for young children (always check the age minimum at kids clubs)

How to Save Money on Your Family Trip to Bali

Although Bali can be a more expensive family holiday pre-trip planning is key to keeping your Bali budget in check.

Here are 10 simple ways to save money on your family trip to Bali and eliminate some of the pre-holiday budgeting stress:

1. Choose a centrally located family resort in Bali

A great way to save you on the cost of drivers and you can easily walk to restaurants nearby.

2. Book a package that includes childcare

Although nannies in Bali are inexpensive, booking a Bali hotel with a kids club will save you money on one-off childcare fees and tips.

3. Book a half-board or all-inclusive Bali hotel

Booking a hotel that includes meals and some drinks will ensure you won’t be reaching for your wallet all the time or paying expensive ATM fees or exchange fees. It also means you don’t have to worry about your kids adding unexpected food and drink costs onto the bill.

4. Choose a hotel with a good entertainment offering

The more free entertainment you have at your Bali hotel, the less likely you are to need to take the kids out for additional shows and day trips.

5. Give your Kids a Budget

One of the best parts of a family trip to Bali is being able to go to local shops and the markets together.

If you are traveling with older children or teenagers, give them a budget for the trip, let them manage their own shopping spending, and do their own negotiating. You are giving them some independence, and responsibility and they will learn valuable negotiation and exchange skills.

6. Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate

The beauty of Bali is that it is still very much a place where you can negotiate.

Whether it is a room upgrade with your hotel, a “7 nights for 6” style packages, hotel extras, or a fixed price with your driver, you can negotiate a lot of things while in Bali.

7. Travel in the Shoulder Season

You can save a lot of money on a Bali holiday if you choose to travel in the low season and by avoiding school holiday surge times.

These are also times when you will be able to negotiate directly with hotels and tour operators for discounts.

The trade-off, of course, is that you may be faced with rainier or more humid days.

8. Eat locally

Eating at local warungs will not only allow your family to have a more authentic experience, but you will also save lots of money.

Bali restaurants are incredible. But, they aren’t cheap. So, if you don’t have the budget to take the whole family out to one of the fancy places, save that for a date night.

9. Use an App to Track Your Expenses

If you are good with spreadsheets, you can track your expenses by inputting each cost.

However, apps like TravelSpend or NomadWallet make it easy to track your expenses. Splitwise is a great app for splitting up trip costs within a group.

10. Choose a Bank Card without International Fees

We use WISE travel card as it has limited international transaction fees and reasonable conversion rates.

Amazing Day Trips from Bali

If this is your first time in Indonesia, you will have an amazing time just exploring the island

But, if you have a little more time or this isn’t your first visit, I encourage you to consider at least a day trip from Bali to one of the neighboring islands.

A few destinations beyond the main island to add to your Bali family itinerary include Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili Islands.

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is an island off the southeast coast of Bali and a popular choice for a day trip from Bali.

This gorgeous island is the largest of the three “Nusa Islands” that are part of a protected marine park.

Nusa Penida is a lovely place to spend a few days or is an easy island hop for the day. Picture clear blue water, palm trees, and a lush green landscape.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

The easiest way to get to Nusa Penida in a day is to book a day tour. But, if you have more time, jump on a boat from Sanur.

The fast boat ride from Sanur to Nusa Penida takes about 40 minutes.

Book a private tour to take you around for the day.

The landscape on Nusa Penida can be rough with steep terrain. So, make sure you tell your tour guide if you are traveling with small children so they can adjust the itinerary accordingly.

Things to do in Nusa Penida

• See the famed Teletubbies Hill, a viewing point and photo opportunity. Best after the rainy season when it’s green and lush./
• See the Rumah Pohon Tree House
• Go snorkeling
• Visit one of the beautiful beaches in Nusa Penida. While the Insta-famous Kelingking Beach is popular the walk down is not suitable for small children.
• Go swimming with the Manta Rays in Manta Bay.

Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is a small island next to Nusa Penida.

Nusa Lembongan is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you are a keen surfer, want to spend some time seeing the iconic coral reefs by snorkeling or spend some beach time away from the crowds.

How to Get to Nusa Lembongan

Sanur to Nusa Lembongan takes about 40 minutes by fast boat.

Boat tickets generally include transfers to and from your hotel in Bali to the wharf.

The Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are an archipelago of three tiny islands, Gili Trawangan (Gili T), Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

While this cluster of islands is particularly popular with backpackers and travelers looking to party, it also has laid-back appeal for families.

How to get to the Gili Islands

The trip from Bali to the Gili Islands takes anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours, depending on which type of boat you choose so it will be a full-day trip if you are just doing a day trip.

Speedboats go from Port Padangbai in southeast Bali directly to Gili Trawangan.

If you are traveling with small children you might prefer one of the larger, slower ferries as the seas can be quite rough on the journey. But, it can become a long journey that way so spend a few nights on the islands if you are able to.

From Bali visa requirements to travel insurance and which activities to book, here are a few things you should do before you leave including some common Bali FAQs.

Is Bali Safe For Families?

There’s no denying that Bali has a tragic past so it’s important to check any travel warnings before you leave for Bali.

I strongly recommend you register your travel details with your country’s government site.

In some instances, you may receive any travel warnings in the lead-up or during your trip. It will also make it easier to contact you in the event of an incident while you are in Indonesia.

Each country will have its own government agency with guidelines and up-to-date travel warnings for Indonesia:

• Australians can check Bali travel warnings here.
• Americans can check travel warnings here.
• Indonesia’s Department of Foreign Affairs lists travel requirements, warnings, and emergency contact information on its site here.

While we have personally never felt unsafe in Bali, you need to weigh up the risks and be vigilant and cautious.

There are risks with traveling to any destination, especially with the added responsibility of traveling with kids.

Tourism Statistics for Bali (2025)

While Bali saw a softening in tourist numbers in recent years. The island is very much a popular destination for tourists once again.

Bali aims to attract 6.5 million foreign tourists in 2025.

Here is a quick snapshot of Bali’s tourism numbers for the past year:

• 469,227 foreign tourists arrived in Bali in March 2024. That’s 3% up on the month prior.
• Tourists from Australia dominated foreign tourist arrivals to Bali in March 2023 with a share of 24.28 percent

Bali Visas

Tourists from 90 countries are permitted entry to Bali for up to 30 days for tourist purposes with a visa on arrival.

You can pre-pay your e-Visa on Arrival through the immigration website here.

Beware of the many fake Bali visa sites around.

Both adults and children must have visas for Bali.

Bali Fast Track Service

For those who have the budget consider the Visa Fast Track service in Bali.

A VIP service for an additional cost, passengers are greeted from the plane and fast-tracked through immigration, the Visa on arrival process, and customs.

This will save you valuable time, especially while dealing with tired children off the plane.

Denpasar Aiport also offers a free buggy car service if you don’t have a travel pram and need help transporting your children.

Respect for Indonesian Customs

Bali is cracking down on the behavior of foreign tourists, right now after several incidents of tourists behaving badly.

Bali authorities will soon hand out a ‘Dos’s and Don’ts Card’ for tourists arriving in the country as a reminder of what is acceptable on the island.

Vaccinations for Bali

Check which vaccines you might need before traveling to Indonesia, both to ensure your family trip to Bali goes as seamlessly as possible, but also to ensure you gain entry on arrival.

Currently, visitors to Bali 18 years and older need proof of Covid-19 vaccination (at least 14 days prior to your visit). You must also download the SATUSEHAT app before arrival.

If you are planning on spending time around the well-known stray Bali dogs or visiting the sacred monkey forest or other animal encounters in Bali, your doctor may advise you to consider additional vaccines.

There are some medications that it is not permitted to bring into Bali, including some ADHD medications. You will need to declare those medications on entry.

Get Comprehensive Travel Insurance for Bali

Buy a comprehensive travel insurance policy. You can buy family policies that cover everyone in the family and save you some money.

Make sure you choose coverage for anything you might want to do in Bali with your kids, particularly any adventure activities like white water rafting, quad biking, surfing, scuba diving or even riding a scooter.

You also want to make sure your insurance policy has substantial coverage for Covid-19.

Bali Airport Transfers

You can absolutely go to the desk at the airport and wait for a Bali taxi.

But, you may be split into two or more cars (to fit all your luggage), you will have to carry your own baby seats or boosters and there will definitely be a wait time.

Prebook private transfers from the airport. Why a private transfer?

The last thing you will want to do after getting off a flight into Bali (often late at night), is to wait for other people before getting in a shuttle to your hotel (and possibly stopping at others along the way).

Also, the humidity in Bali can be pretty overwhelming when you jump straight from the intense air conditioning of a plane. So, the faster you get into an air-conditioned van, the better.

So, if you are staying at a hotel there are a few things to check when it comes to Bali airport transfers for families:

• Do you have transfers included?
• Will your transfer be private?
• Are child seats and boosters included or will they cost extra?

If you are staying at a villa, it is likely that you will have a driver included as part of your package. But, don’t assume they will have car seats in the van. Make sure you request them (even at an additional cost).

We have used Bali Baby Hire before and found them to be efficient and good to work with.

We had a private car with a car seat collect us promptly for the transfer from the airport to the hotel and again on our return transfer to Denpasar airport.

The beauty of Uluwatu beach clubs is most offer incredible views and stunning white sandy beaches.

Most are family-friendly, so you can settle in for the entire day with your kids too.

Here are a few of our favourite beach clubs near Uluwatu, Bali.

1. Sundays Beach Club

Sundays Beach Club has a special place in our hearts as we got married at The Ungasan Resort and enjoyed our post-wedding recovery day at Sundays Beach Club on one of Bali’s most beautiful beaches.

Returning recently, it was interesting to see how the club has evolved from the simple beach club it once was.

The private beach club is definitely fancier than back then.

However, it still has the same certain rustic charm, great drinks and good food.

Most importantly, it offers a calm oasis on its own private white sand beach, which is very different from some of the bigger day clubs further north.

Book some beds or a cabana on the beach to save your wait time and ensure you get an umbrella (it can get hot out there).

Entry is via reception at The Ungasan where you’ll follow the stairs and pathways down to their inclinator that carries you to the club on the beach.

Sundays Beach Club entrance fee:

Weekdays – Adult IDR 400,000 | Child 7-12 IDR 200,000 || Weekend – Adult IDR 450,000 | Child 7-12 IDR 250,000

It has long been a popular destination for the day on Dreamland Beach.

Or, book a prime position to experience one of Uluwatu’s stunning sunsets at its Sunset Theater.

Either way, El Kabron promises good times in this magical Bukit spot.

Ulu Cliffhouse offers a number of different areas to spend your day relaxing.

Start on a daybed by the 25-metre-long infinity swimming pool, dine at The Cliff Restaurant or venture down the cliff to the Ocean Deck with low-tide access to a private beach.

Ulu also has ticketed special events like world-famous DJs throughout the year.

Ulu is also home to seven boutique suites at  The Clubhouse at Ulu, for those who want to spend a little longer in Uluwatu.

4. Roosterfish Beach Club

Rustic and ultra-relaxed Roosterfish is one of the newer Bali beach clubs, offering a chilled-out experience on Pandawa Beach. A quieter part of the island, spend a day swimming, eating and relaxing at Roosterfish, before the crowds catch on.

Roosterfish features a large outdoor pool overlooking the beach, a grassed area with casual seating and cabanas that can be reserved in advance.

They hold a Sunday brunch, “Penguins Love a Bath” from 11 am to 4 pm, every Sunday. A buffet brunch is served, backed by beats from their resident DJ. Tickets are about IDR 499,000++ per person.

A great option for families, there is plenty of room to run around, explore the beach, activities on Sunday and a tailored kids menu for the little ones.

Roosterfish entrance fee: Free. But you may need to pay an entrance fee to Pandawa Beach.

It’s here you’ll find fine white sand and breathtaking limestone cliffs.

Guests can settle into a spot by the pool, and enjoy the resident DJ, some fresh snacks, pizzas and drinks.

Special offers include bottle service, shisha and even a drone photography service for those looking to, quite literally, elevate their Instagram game.

Tropical Temptation Beach Club entrance fee: Free but reservations are recommended.

Opening Hours: 10 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 9 pm on weekends.

Family-friendly? Yes, however, children aren’t allowed in the pool area after 5 pm.

Children are only allowed in the lounge area and must be supervised at all times.

6. White Rock Beach Club

One of Bali’s newest beach clubs, White Rock Beach Club is also on Melastic Beach in South Bali.

Choose one of their (many) day bed or lounge packages and spend the day between the pool, the ocean and the deliciously global food menu featuring everything from Indonesian favourites like Nasi Goreng to Western comfort food and fresh seafood.

Every Sunday, they hold a market from 3 pm to 8 pm which is perfect for families.

Mari Beach Club is located at Batu Belig, on a prime beachfront position in Seminyak.

An artfully created space has been designed to fit seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape, inspired by Mount Agung, Bali’s famous rice terraces.

Still one of our longtime favourite beach clubs, you can’t go wrong with Ku De Ta.

Settle in from morning to night under their iconic red umbrellas in the heart of Seminyak.

Ku De Ta is a great choice for couples, families and friends; a good mix between fun and relaxation, without the full-blown party vibe. We often even pop into Ku De Ta for breakfast on the weekend, while in Bali (often with a cheeky mimosa added on).

We then make sure we have a swim and grab a daybed before they fill up (best to pre-book a daybed).

Ku De Ta entrance fee: Free

There isn’t a minimum spend at Ku De Ta. But, you pay about Rp. 2,500,000 to reserve a day bed (for up to 4 people sharing the day bed) and that is credited towards food and beverage.

Opening Hours: From 8 am daily

Family-friendly? Yes. Children under 12 aren’t allowed on the second floor.

Ku De Ta has a great Family Sunday program with kids’ activities.

13. SugarSand

Located on Double Six beach, part of Hotel Indigo, SugarSand really is in the heart of Seminyak.

A cosy spot, across the road from the sand, this is a calmer club that is perfect for a quiet lunch, swim and afternoon relaxation session.

It’s ideal if you are a guest of Hotel Indigo and you don’t want to stray too far, as we were on our visit.

Particularly, with a toddler in tow.

From SugarSand, work your way across the beach to La Plancha to watch the sunset with the crowds before moving on to dinner.

SugarSand is accessible via Hotel Indigo Seminyak or via the beach on Jalan Double Six.

More than just a beach club, La Brisa is an experience and has quickly become one of the top beach clubs in Bali for Summer sundowners.

Crafted from reclaimed wood from more than 500 old fisherman boats, this Canggu beach club is an architectural marvel.

Bookings include amenities such as towels, sunscreen, water and access to changing rooms and showers.

Pick a neutral color that you can mix and match with all your clothes and take it out in the evenings just in case the temperature drops.

Non-Iron Chinos

A pair of chinos for men who want to dine at the fancier restaurants. These good-value no iron chinos are a good option.

Light Jacket

If you are visiting Tulum in the rainy season, a light jacket may come in handy. A thin packable jacket is probably all you’ll need.

Tulum Packing List: Sunglasses, Shoes, and Hats

Polarised sunglasses

Folding sunglasses save space and reduce the risk that they’ll get crushed or scratched on the journey.

Sun hat

A sun hat is important for the tropical climate as temperatures in summer can reach 90F/32F in high summer.

A packable hat is a great idea for sun protection and saves on luggage space.

Hat clip

Don’t forget a handy hat clip too so you won’t lose track of your hat while you’re out at about. It easily clips to your beach bag so it’s out of your hands.

Strappy sandals

Ditch the high heels in Tulum for cute sandals instead. Albeit trendy, this is a laid-back beach vacation destination where bare feet are common too.

Try to avoid wearing cheap flip-flops for your whole trip and invest in some sandals that support your arches.

These sandals are made to support your feet during all of that walking.

Water shoes

Water shoes are a great option if you plan on doing a cenotes tour. 

Comfortable shoes

Lightweight trainers are particularly important for any day trip from Tulum.

Whether you are visiting the Chichen Itza or going to a cenote for the morning or doing any other outdoor activities, we recommend you wear sneakers.

Closed-toe shoes

If you are planning on going to any Tulum nightclubs you may need closed-toe shoes.

Check their entry dress code requirements before leaving home or throw if you have room in your suitcase, throw in a pair of roll up ballet flats or casual slip-ons, just in case.

Tulum Packing List: Toiletries and Medicine

Reef-safe sunscreen

We like this sunscreen as it has natural ingredients and is reef-safe – perfect for the beach or cenotes. Especially if you are spending a long time at the beach, make sure you buy waterproof sunscreen and reapply often.

Sunscreen lip balm

Pack lip balm with sunscreen to protect your lips from the sun as well.

Skincare

As well as deodorant I carry cleansing balm or micellar water wipes, toner, and moisturizer in travel sizes.

Fragrance

A solid perfume is a clever way of carrying your fragrance without it leaking all through your luggage.

Just make sure it stays in your hotel room so it doesn’t melt in the Tulum heat.

Hair Products

We carry a travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, and a leave-in conditioner spray for after the beach or before the long trip home.

I am obsessed with Oribe hair products.

Hair Accessories

If you have long hair, I definitely recommend carrying hair claw clips in your purse for when the humidity creeps up.

Makeup

The weather in Tulum means it’s way too hot to wear a full face of makeup.

IT Cosmetics CC Cream Illumination Full Coverage Foundation, waterproof eyeliner, and waterproof mascara should suffice.

Mosquito repellent

Bug spray is definitely one of the essential items and will be your best friend in Tulum. Typical of a tropical climate like this there are lots of mosquitos so carry bug spray everywhere.

First Aid Kit

A travel first aid kit is a good idea if you are planning on doing a lot of adventure activities.

Add in your personal medicine (there is a limit on how much you can bring in), plus some additional medicine and electrolytes in case you get hit by food poisoning.

We always carry Buscopan Forte, Immodium, Mintec, Panadol, Nurofen, and Hydrolyte in our carry-on medicine kit.

Tulum Packing List: Bags and Accessories

Dry bag

A dry bag is a good idea, particularly for any of the water activities offered in Tulum to keep your valuables dry.

We use a cross-body dry bag (that folds flat in the bottom of the suitcase) so you can sling it across your body for Tulum bike rides too.

Cross-body bag

A cross-body bag will come in handy when you’re wandering around town or jumping on a rental bike.

Sling bag

A sling bag is another good option for sightseeing as you can wear it as a sling bag or fanny pack and it folds up easily in your luggage to take home after your trip. These Bellroy sling bags are a great size.

Beach bag

A beach bag is definitely a Tulum essential.

If you don’t have a cute compact travel beach bag at home it might be a good souvenir to buy in town to remember your Tulum vacation.

Travel Backpack

A small travel day pack could be a practical thing to pack for both travel and day trips.

Particularly for any of the tours like ATV or zipline and the like, you can keep your essentials safe and your hands-free. 

We love Patagonia bags as they last forever and are really durable.

Travel towel

A compact quick-dry towel will be helpful on a trip to one of the beautiful beaches, a boat trip, or a cenotes tour.

Waterproof bag for your phone

A waterproof bag for your phone will protect your phone from water. You can also sling it around your neck and keep cards in there if you need to (when your bags are elsewhere on an excursion).

If you are going on a boat tour or cenote trip just throw your phone in the bag and seal it up and continue to use your phone safely.

Waterproof accessories kit for your GoPro

If you plan on jumping into a cenote with your GoPro, make sure you have really good waterproof housing and a floating handle grip with a safety loop so you don’t lose it in the water.

Reusable water bottle

As you can’t drink the tap water in Mexico consider a reusable water bottle to save money on buying water and wasting plastic bottles,

Camera

Obviously an essential for any trip to Tulum. There is a photo opportunity around every corner here, from the local village to the incredible natural landscapes. Our favorites are the Canon DSLRs or the Powershot range for beginner photographers.

If you plan on doing any work or staying in touch during your Tulum holiday, don’t forget your laptop.

A Portable Charger

A portable charger with a built-in cable will give your phone longer life when you wear the battery out with all of those Insta-posts of beautiful Tulum.

SIM card

If you are from the US or Canada you may be able to use roaming on your existing phone plan.

If you are from elsewhere in the world ensure you are traveling with an unlocked phone and you can grab a Telcel SIM card.

Portable Door Lock

While not explicitly a Tulum packing list essential, a Portable Door Lock is an inexpensive extra line of safety, particularly if you are a solo traveler in Mexico.

Tulum Packing List: Important Travel Documents and Apps

The most important things to pack and organize are your forms of ID and important documents, money, credit cards, and insurance papers.

Passport

You need at least six months validity on your passport to gain entry to Mexico.

Visas

Do you need a visa for Mexico?

Australians do not need a visa for Mexico. Nor do citizens of the United States, the UK, or Singapore for a time Countries that need a visa to enter Mexico are listed here.

Health Checks

Ensure you check when there are any restrictions related to health checks before booking your ticket to Mexico.

Credit cards and a debit card

There are ATMs in Playa Del Carmen and Tulum but make sure you bring some cash too. Withdrawing money from an ATM may mean an extra cost or service fee too.

We choose WISE for this reason.

Travel Insurance

A comprehensive travel insurance policy is essential, especially if you are doing Tulum tours.

Make sure you choose a policy that covers those adventure activities you choose. The last thing you would want is to be stranded in a foreign country without health insurance.

Rappi is a local delivery app similar to Uber (there isn’t any Uber in Tulum)

Maps.me – An offline maps app to help you get around if your wifi is patchy. It also shows you points of interest, restaurants and gyms around Tulum.

What Not to Pack for Tulum

High heels

You won’t need heels in Tulum as you might in Cancun. Sandals or low wedges are enough for a nice dinner out.

Expensive Bags or Jewelry

Tulum is a very low-key travel destination. So, there’s really no need to bring your designer clothing and valuable handbags or jewelry. They may be safer at home.

Drones

While it might be tempting to try to catch those stunning turquoise sets from your drone, drone use in Tulum isn’t permitted for visitors.

Food

Leave any open food on the plane. You aren’t allowed to bring foods in that are not ‘company packed and sealed’.

You will need to declare any food with customs when entering the country.

Lots of Money

Try not to carry too much money on you at once. You can get more out if  you need to, but there’s no need to take the risk.

What to Wear in Tulum to Visit a Cenote

Wear your swimsuit, shorts, and a top in the car with sneakers.

To ensure you have a great time on your cenote tour carry water shoes to wear in the cenote and keep your trainers dry for the walk back to the bus so you’re not uncomfortable.

Pack your travel towel to dry yourself and your feet off before you do the walk back.

Make sure you put on plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellant before you get to the cenote.

Don’t forget your wet bag, phone bag, and waterproof GoPro case so there aren’t any accidents.

What to Wear to the Beach in Tulum

Tulum has some of the best beaches in Mexico, so you may want to settle in for the morning.

A bathing suit with a cover-up, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and some strappy sandals (with ankle straps if you are riding a bike).

If you plan to go to a beach bar from the beach, make sure you carry a maxi dress or shorts and a tank top to put on after the beach. While some Tulum beach bars don’t mind bare feet, others have a specific (albeit casual) dress code.

What to Wear to Chichen Itza or Other Mayan Ruins

For a day trip to Chichen Itza or other Mayan ruins in Quintana Roo, you need to be sun safe and wear comfortable shoes.

Wear sneakers, shorts, and either a loose-fitting long-sleeved linen-style shirt or tank top (with lots of sunscreen).

You will definitely need to wear a hat and sunglasses and don’t forget to take your water bottle as the ruins are exposed to the sun and you can get overheated quickly.

Take your swimmers and water shoes if you are doing a tour that includes a visit to one of the Tulum Cenotes too.

What to Wear to a Tulum Restaurant

While there are only a few fancier restaurants in Tulum, a couple have specific dress codes. Men may be required to wear chinos or tailored shorts (overboard shorts).

Some Tulum clubs require closed-toe shoes as well.

For those wondering how to dress in Tulum for dinner out. Generally, flowy maxi dresses with sandals are dressy enough for casual Tulum.

What to Wear on a Tulum Boat Trip

It gets super hot out on one of the boat trips off Mexico’s coast, especially in the heat of the Tulum summer.

A bathing suit with a romper or shorts and a top is the easiest thing to wear on a boat (dresses will fly up in the breeze).

Make sure you pack sunglasses and a hat and lather up in sunscreen.

Flip flops or sandals are a good footwear option.

What to Wear to a Tulum Yoga Class

Comfortable, breathable activewear or yoga clothing is important for a Tulum yoga class or retreat.

Don’t forget your water bottle and travel towel.

Most studios will provide yoga mats, blocks, and straps for you.

There are warnings in place for Quintana Roo in relation to risk.

The current advice is to only use ATMs in public places, don’t carry a lot of cash, and be especially cautious walking at night time in Tulum and Playa del Carmen, and Cancun.

The advice is to generally stay in well-lit areas with other people.

Make sure you check any up-to-date travel warnings before traveling to Tulum.

How to Get to Tulum

Tulum is a town on the breathtaking Yucatan Peninsula on Mexico’s east coast. 

With turquoise waters lapping at white sand beaches, ancient ruins, luxury eco-hotels, and adventure tours aplenty, Tulum is the perfect place for almost everyone to visit.

You’ll fly into Cancun direct or from Mexico City. Click to search Tulum Airfares.

Make sure you fill in your tourist entry card online to save time on arrival.

Then, you’ll need to get in a taxi or the bus from Cancun Airport to Downtown Tulum.

The bus will not stop at individual hotels. So, make sure your hotel can collect you from the bus terminal in Tulum.

The bus from Cancun airport to Tulum takes about 2.5 hours and it costs about $US19 each way.

When is the Best Time to Visit Tulum

It’s important to note, the Tulum weather is hot, really hot, especially in the summer months.

The best time to visit Tulum is from November to March (during the winter months).

It is the (relatively) dry season and the mildest time of the year when it comes to weather in Tulum. Expect average daytime temperatures between December and March about 75F /23C. This is also the high season.

May to October is the hottest time in Tulum. With temperatures reaching a maximum of about 90F / 32C during these months, it also gets really humid during these months. So, make sure you pack for the warm weather.

The weather in Tulum in October is wet. So, expect a little rain and average temperatures of 80f / 27C if you choose to visit Tulum in the low season.

Hurricane season in Tulum is also from June to November with some restaurants closed during this time too.

How Long Should You Spend in Tulum?

How long to book in Tulum will depend on how many tours you want to do while you are in Tulum.

If you just want to cover the main things to do in Tulum, you only need 2 to 3 days.

If you want to do Tulum day trips or day tours, try to allow 5 to 7 days in Tulum to allow for more relaxation time in between.

The beauty of long haul flights is that any premium carrier will provide personal entertainment screens. But, screen time isn’t going to offer hours of entertainment to your children on a long flight.

Not only does the novelty wear off fast, but there really are limited options for kids when it comes to airplane entertainment systems.

That’s why you need to make sure to pack a selection of toys and activities for each of your kids.

This is a comprehensive list of the best travel toys for kids.

Obviously, you don’t need to pack all of these items. But use this as a guide so you pick and choose those which you think would suit your own kids’ interests and ages. 

The Best Travel Toys for Babies

Sensory toys are perfect for babies and toddlers.

Not only are they great travel toys to help develop their fine motor skills, but they are also a particularly great distraction during take-off and landing when the pressure may be affecting your little ones’ ears.

A rattle or pretend keys. If you’re traveling with a baby and you have to use the insanely small change table in the airplane bathroom, keeping a small toy in the diaper bag is a clever idea.

These Hit The Road Activity Keys are a great toy that we carried on planes (anything with a mirror is a winner with babies).

We must have taken Sophie the Giraffe on at least 30 flights when Alaska was a baby.

Great for teething, chewing during take off if they won’t feed, or as a travel toy to entertain during the flight or car ride, this is one of our favorites.

Suction spinner toys are the perfect toys to stick to the plane window during take-off to entertain babies when they can get frustrated and tired of being in that infant seat belt.

A tummy time book with a mirror and teethers were one of my daughter’s favorite travel toys as a baby.

It was the simplest and easiest travel toy to carry in the carry-on, the baby backpack or to use in the hotel room for playtime. 

Musical pram toys. While most traditional pram toys are too bulky to take traveling, a small pram toy can be surprisingly entertaining for your baby during transit.

We would attach a pram toy like this one to our travel pram, then place it in the car seat of the rental car and use it again when exploring. It easily hooks onto a travel backpack for transit.

Picture books. I’ve mentioned my love of the chew-proof books the Indestructibles series, before. They are lovely and thin, colorful, and cannot be ripped by little hands.

You don’t need a huge busy board, simply choose the right size quiet book that’s the right size for your carry-on.

A Melissa & Doug refillable water pen and coloring pad is a genius idea as there is no mess, no fuss and you don’t have to watch them like a hawk as you do if you carry markers or sharp pencils.

A magnetic play set will get their little fingers working and test their imagination as they design different scenes.

Animal playsets are the best toys for your toddler to take in the car, plane, or even the bath. You don’t need to pack a whole set, just throw a few in their pencil case.

A Duplo set is a double-duty travel activity as your toddler can build the scene and then use it for imaginary play.

Fingers puppets are a super packable fun travel toy for toddlers. Choose silicone or plastic as they then double as bath toys.

Popper fidget toys are a simple yet effective travel activity for toddlers. The mickey mouse poppers with a key chain are easily attached to your travel bag for entertainment while in transit.

A silicone coloring placemat sits neatly on their tray table and is another fun way for kids to color and draw and is reusable.

A collapsible bucket and sand set is such a handy toy to keep in the car for road trips or to squeeze in your luggage for a holiday.

The Best Travel Toys for Kids Aged 3-5 Years

Kids’ creativity and imaginative play really flourish at this age, meaning they have a much broader range of interests when it comes to play.

Dot books are a fun travel toy for preschool to school-aged children. They are a new take on a coloring book. Older toddlers will love these too.

Coloring books are the perfect travel toy for a budding little artist. If you travel or go out to eat frequently, I recommend you buy a pack in bulk and keep them in the cupboard. 

Twistable crayons are a great idea as there is less chance they will make a mess and you don’t need to carry a pencil sharpener.

They are suitable for toddlers to school-aged children and we’ve found they last a long time compared to regular crayons.

Reusable Sticker Books. Reusable stickers are a clever option over a single-use sticker pad as they can design the scene, pack up and start all over again.

Magnatiles are a great way to play with your child on the plane. You can build structures and shapes together and they easily pack away afterward into a ziplock bag or carrying case.

Suction toys are fun airplane toys but also double as bath toys once you get to your hotel.

A talking flashcards toy is one of the best travel items for toddlers for long road trips. This is a good way of entertaining and educating a toddler while they sit in the back seat as they can learn unassisted.

A small magnetic drawing board. Kids follow the pre-made pattern by placing colored magnets to create a picture.

A mini Etch A Sketch is great for small hands as you simply draw with the knobs and shake to erase.

Wikki Stix are bendable crafting sticks of twine that children can shape into whatever they like.

Both little kids and older kids will like getting creative with these and as they are waxy, they don’t require glue to stick onto surfaces.

An airplane tray table cover. A tray table cover is a simple way to keep your child’s snacks and hands on a clean surface (because we know they never keep their food on a plate).

This cover keeps the space clean while adding a couple of extra activities to their schedule.

A foldable travel tray. If you are doing a lot of long-haul travel or a big road trip, consider a tray table organizer. Your child can settle in and get set up and you don’t have to crawl on an airplane floor every five minutes in search of a missing crayon.

Simple, fun, thin books. Both of my kids love the School of Monsters series.

The Best Travel Toys for Kids Aged 5 to 7

Preschool and early school-aged children love to learn in a practical way. So, the best travel toys for 3-5 year olds are fun, educational, and creative activities.

Kids’ tablets can come in handy when you are on a long car ride or family road trip (or you’re flying with a budget carrier that doesn’t provide screens – check that before flying).

While it’s simple to download shows and movies onto your children’s tablet, they can be educational too by adding games like Reading Eggs, World of Peppa Pig, or the Grandma’s Garden series.

If you don’t have the budget for an Apple iPad, buy the top-selling kids tablet with built-in software, parental controls, and a shock-proof case. 

We have these kid’s wireless headphones for our kids to watch tablets or the inflight-screen. They are fun colors, the kids get stickers to customize them and they have a safe, maximum sound limit.

Don’t forget to grab a headphone adapter for flying.

Handheld water games are not only compact but can be quite challenging. These are the perfect game to keep your kids occupied while waiting in those long airport lines.

An activity book is the best travel toy for preschool and early school-aged children, particularly on long trips. They can do coloring, solve puzzles, answer questions, and draw.

You absolutely do not have to pack an entire suitcase full of toys for your kids to travel with.

A handful of different toys is the perfect amount. Be smart about what you choose to pack.

The best travel toys for kids are those that are dual-function (like a soft toy with sensory extras like teethers), reusable, compact, and easily washable.

Opt for Quiet Toys

Consider your neighbors on that flight, train ride, or airport lounge. The majority of toys should be quiet toys that don’t disturb others.

If your kids are using a tablet, ensure they have headphones plugged in. And, don’t use musical toys or loud rattles unless you are in the car or out in the open.

New Toys Are Key

New toys are key to keeping them engaged for longer. This doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune or go overboard with how many you take.

Make sure you have some travel toys in your carry-on and some in your checked baggage for when you arrive at your destination.

You may need them for the wait in the luggage hall, the transfer trip, or the hotel waiting area.

How to Pack Kids Toys for the Plane

Encourage each child to decorate their own packing cubes that will fit easily in a carry-on.

Make sure you have two separate bags or activities for younger and older siblings or a bag for each child, so you don’t risk arguments over who owns which toys.

Make sure each child (if they are 5 years old and up) knows they are responsible for their own travel activities, including packing everything away once they’re finished.

When you’re packaging up your toys into different bags, ensure anything that could leak is in a well-sealed snap-lock bag.

Ask For Inflight Entertainment

Don’t be afraid to ask the flight attendant whether the airline has any travel toys for kids.

Some airlines have great kids activity kits like the Qantas kids pack that contains a mini Etch A Sketch style toy.

There’s nothing better than a road trip to explore in the comfort of a car. These are just a few of the day trips from Queenstown that have appeal for the whole family.

Queenstown to Glenorchy

One of our must-do Queenstown experiences, if you have access to a car, is to take a day trip from Queenstown to Glenorchy.

The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is about a 40-minute drive but can take up to an hour if, like me, you are constantly struck by the scenery and pulling over as you happen upon secluded beaches and empty viewing points, perfect for putting your photography skills to the test.

You might recognise Glenorchy as the backdrop for the epic Lord of the Rings movies (click here to book a Lord of the Rings Locations Tour).

If you aren’t mad for Middle Earth, the now very Insta-famous Glenorchy red shed might look familiar.

Either way, this tiny town of Glenorchy is well worth the drive from Queenstown, if not for the jaw-dropping journey alone.

Leave early in the morning, and head south, keeping Lake Wakatipu on your left. You’ll often find yourselves alone to contemplate the beauty of this magical drive with the passengers able to witness the Remarkables painted in pastels across the water.

If, like us, you take a day trip from Queenstown to Glenorchy during winter make sure you dress warmly. It was a beautiful clear day, but the wind was biting coming off the river.

Things to Do in Glenorchy

Visit the Glenorchy red shed located on the waterfront reserve. A former NZ Railways Department building where goods were dropped off and picked up by steamers before there was road access into town.

We were among the first visitors to arrive at the iconic Glenorchy red shed first thing in the morning.

After you’ve walked the waterfront foreshore and taken your photos of the red shed and the river from the wharf, make your way back to Mrs. Woolly’s General Store to get warm. Sit in for a coffee and one of their highly-praised pies or a sweet treat from the cabinet. And, don’t forget to shop the local artisan-made goods in store.

If you are visiting Glenorchy in summer, pack your swimmers and enjoy a swim in the lake.

Thrill seekers or those visiting Queenstown without a car could book a jet boat ride and ‘funyak’ experience with Dart River Adventures.

Their half-day tour packages include a shuttle service down to Glenorchy. Plus, it’s an exhilarating way to see Glenorchy and a world heritage site from the glacier-fed aquamarine waters of the Dart River.

Queenstown to Arrowtown

Only a 25-minutes away, a visit to Arrowtown was our favourite Queenstown day trip during our recent visit.

Wondering what to do in Arrowtown once you arrive in this quaint former gold mining town?

There are actually so many great things to do in Arrowtown, even if you’re only stopping in on the way to Wanaka.

Things to do in Arrowtown

For an introduction to the gold mining history of Arrowtown, start at the Lakes District Museum. The museum is also the tourist information centre for the town so you can grab maps and event information there too.

For a unique Arrowtown activity, you could also try panning for gold by hiring tools from the tourist office in the museum.

Then, walk up to see the 19th Century miners’ huts (mostly from the 1870s) that have been lovingly restored. Stop in at the family-friendly Arrowtow pub, The Fork and Tap for a drink or snack afterward.

Then, continue along the main street to peruse the boutiques. We loved Smith and Western, Bunnies and Goals.

We stopped in for coffee at the cute Arrowtown cafe, The Post Masters Kirchen and Bar after we’d checked out the shops. Patagonia Chocolates is also a good Arrowtown cafe for a casual coffee or hot chocolate.

For those visiting Arrowtown with kids, take them for a run around Buckingham Green (next to Bendix Stables) or around the block to Rose Douglas Park Playground. Kids also won’t miss the very charming and busy, The Remarkable Sweet Shop.

During our recent day trip from Queenstown, we booked a long lunch at nearby Akarua Winery.

Akarua is a family-friendly restaurant with outdoor seating, delicious farm-to-table food, and a great kids’ play area (bookings essential).

Queenstown to Wanaka

One of the most popular day trips from Queenstown has to be to Wanaka.

The Queenstown to Wanaka drive takes about an hour.

Wanaka town is perched on the southern end of the stunning Lake Wanaka, with the Southern Alps’ Mount Aspiring National Park at the doorstep.

Wanaka town has a really different feel to Queenstown. An adventure-lovers paradise, there are so many things to do in Wanaka for the outdoor enthusiast.

Things to do in Wanaka

A Wanaka must-do while you’re in town is to see That Wanaka Tree.

The lonely willow, standing solemnly offshore was made famous by an award-winning photo. Now, it seems everyone wants a photo of their own.

Park in the Wanaka Watersports Carpack and follow the crowds down the beach to snap your photo.

For a truly unique activity in Wanaka, enjoy a lake-to-plate experience fishing in Wanaka at Hook Fishing.

One of the best things to do in Wanaka with kids, you will catch your own Chinook salmon from the lake and the team cook it up for you while you’re enjoying the other games on offer, from mini-putt putt golf to lawn games.

If you are visiting Wanaka with kids they will also love the Dinosaur Playground and a walk along the lakefront at Roy’s Bay. Older kids (and adults) may also enjoy Puzzling World.

You can’t take a day trip to Wanaka without stopping in at one of the many Wanaka cafes – the food scene is buzzing in this cute town.

We had lunch at the family-friendly Amigos restaurant and stopped in at Scroggin Coffee and Eatery (which felt like I was back in Finland or Norway), for a delicious coffee and afternoon snack for our car ride back to Queenstown.

If you make it to Wanaka in good weather consider going on a Wanaka hike. Here are a few of the Wanaka hikes in Aspiring National Park to tackle during your day trip. Always check the weather and the track conditions before you head out on the trail.

Visiting Queenstown in Winter? Intermediate and advanced skiers shouldn’t miss the chance to ski at the largest ski resort in New Zealand’s South Island, Treble Cone. Treble Cone is just a 40 minutes drive from Wanaka.

Save some time to stop in at the historic Cardrona Hotel on your way back to Queenstown. This Wanaka pub gets busy on apres days during the winter season so try to snag a spot early afternoon.

Queenstown to Bannockburn

A drive out to Bannockburn is one of the shorter day trips from Queenstown.

About a 50-minute drive from Queenstown, Bannockburn has a little something for everyone – from history to cellar doors and dare-devil adventure.

Another small former mining town, Bannockburn has historic appeal. The old stone buildings still stand in town and are home to the local shops.

Things to do in Bannockburn

Those interested in the mining history of the town can visit the Bannockburn Sluicing Historic Reserve.

If you are visiting Bannockburn with kids in Summer, take them cherry-picking at Cheeki Cherries in Cromwell. Pick your own cherries and stone fruit and have a play or a picnic on the orchard grounds afterward.

Wine enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in this Central Otago basin.

Carrick Winery and Mt Difficulty both offer tastings and different dining options. For a fancy lunch book into the restaurants at either Mt Difficulty or Carrick Winery.

For a family-friendly option, picnic on the lawn at Carrick Winery and enjoy their wines paired with freshly made pizza or a platter proudly crafted from freshly grown produce and locally sourced products.

Adrenaline junkies will be excited to hear that the Aj Hackett Kawarau Bridge Bungee jump is in the Gibbston Valley too. If you choose the self-drive option, you’ll have plenty of time to spend the rest of your day exploring the local area.

Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the local hiking and mountain biking trails around Bannockburn that you could cover during a day trip like the 45th Parallel Track and the Bannockburn Sluicings track.

Queenstown to Milford Sound

Milford Sound sits in the heart of the Fiordland National Park.

As the name suggests, the waters are dark and deep, dramatically surrounded by steep cliffs and waterfalls. It’s no surprise a Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown is high on anyone’s list who has enough time in Queenstown to squeeze it in.

With scenery reminiscent of breathtaking Iceland, it’s easy to see why this is one of the Lord of the Rings filming locations (featured in Lord of the Rings (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring).

A Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown could mean a full day of travel up and back. The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound takes about 4 hours (but could take longer in winter). Check the road and weather in Milford Sound before you set out on the drive.

A flat rate fee applies for Milford Sound parking and you need to arrive at least 20 minutes before your cruise departs.

The drive from Queenstown to Te Anau takes about 2 hours which is a good mid-point place to stop on the road to Milford Sound. You can also stop your drive here and jump on a boat from Te Anau.

Things to Do in Milford Sound

Ensure you allow plenty of time once you get there for a Milford Sound cruise. The cruise will take about 2-3 hours, depending on which company you choose.

If you feeling adventurous, choose a kayak and cruise combination with a guide to show you the sights from the water.

Keen hikers may also be able to squeeze in one of these Milford Sound walks during their day trip, depending on the weather (this is the wettest place in New Zealand).

Queenstown to Mt Cook

A day trip from Queenstown to Mt Cook offers a complete change of scenery and a fully immersive alpine experience for the adventurous.

Aoraki Mt Cook is the tallest mountain in New Zealand.

The drive from Queenstown to Mt Cook village takes about 3.5 to 4 hours each way, depending on weather conditions. So, you’ll need to get an early start if you are doing the drive as a day trip. The Crown Range Road is a super scenic drive.

Things to Do in Mt Cook National Park

While mountaineers have long journeyed to Mt Cook in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary, there are plenty of things to do in Mt Cook for the everyday visitor too.

From climbing to skiing and hiking to a Tasman glacier experience, Mt Cook National Park has a range of activities on offer for those with a good level of fitness.

Plan ahead and book a soak at the Hot Tubs Omarama well in advance so you can relax before you come off the mountain (leaving plenty of time to get down the mountain before dark) and begin the drive back to Queenstown.

There are also Queenstown tours to Mt Cook from Queenstown via bus or helicopter so you can just sit back and enjoy the trip.

Where to Find the Best Coffee in Queenstown

While these Queenstown cafes serve up a moreish morning brew, many also serve some of the best food in Queenstown too.

Vudu Cafe

There are actually two Vudu Cafes, the original one in the centre of town and the other overlooking Lake Wakatipu.

The coffee is fantastic (we had two each) and they open early if you are on a morning walk.

The food is also perfectly fitting for a cold winter’s morning. We tried the Eggs Benedict and ‘Gibbston Agria Hash with Chilli Fried Eggs’.

Fergbaker

The sibling to Fergburger, Fergbaker bakery serves up great, early-morning coffee, as well as pastries and pies perfect for on-the-go if you’re keen to get up onto the ski slopes quickly.

The breakfast burrito is pretty darn good too.

Marmolada

Marmolada is a warm, spacious cafe with a Scandinavian feel. Chances are, if you’re joining the morning ski bus queue wrapping around the corner from the Man Street Carpark, you’ll walk straight passed this cute Queenstown cafe.

Start here for breakfast or pick up a pastry and coffee to keep you warm during your wait to go up the mountain.

Patagonia Chocolates

While their ice creams and desserts cannot be missed, Patagonia Chocolates make delicious coffee and hot chocolate too.

Patagonia roasts their own coffee on site too so you can take home some fresh Queenstown coffee beans to brew your own back at your hotel.

The Boat Shed

We consider the Boat Shed is one of the best cafes in Queenstown for a few reasons.

The historic former New Zealand Railways Shipping Office is positioned right on the lake (you can even arrive by boat). It has some of the best coffee in Queenstown and a delicious farm-to-table menu.

Cosy up inside or venture out onto the deck for a closer view over the lake.

Casual Queenstown Restaurants

Dining in Queenstown ranges from fresh fast-food favourites to white-tablecloth award-winning restaurants.

These are a few of our favourite casual Queenstown cafes and restaurants, perfect for dinner in Queenstown with the kids.

Fergburger

If you asked anyone who has visited this gorgeous town where to eat in Queenstown during your stay, Fergburger will most likely always be one of the first places they’ll recommend.

When you see the line outside this joint you will definitely think to yourself, “Nah, I’ll give it a miss this time”.

Let me tell you, it’s worth the wait. The burgers here are world-renowned and very worthy of all the praise and you’ll see why it’s one of the must-do activities to do in Queenstown.

All the patties are made from 100 per cent, prime New Zealand beef, plus there are scrumptious chicken, tofu, falafel and even venison options.

The Cow Restaurant

The Cow is a Queenstown institution and the long wait for a table proves it. As soon as you enter the restaurant, your nose will be completely overwhelmed by the delicious scent of wood-fired pizza.

They haven’t changed their menu since they opened nearly 40 years ago. It’s not just pizza on the menu, they are well-known for their spaghetti too.

They don’t take bookings at The Cow so we got there right on opening and scored a table next to the fire.

Be warned; it’s a tiny place, so be prepared to get to know your eating neighbours very well.

They also have a sister restaurant in Wanaka.

Fat Badgers Pizza

Fat Badgers Pizza is all about pizza and cocktails.

Open for lunch from 12 pm, grab a spot on the long tables outside and share a couple of pizzas, salads and even poutine, perfect to meet those post-skiing appetites.

Fat Badgers also has a huge range of vegan pizza options for those looking for vegan cafes in Queenstown.

Cargo at Gantley’s

We loved Cargo at Gantley’s so much on our first visit, we returned a couple of days later.

Set in a gorgeous historic building in Arthur’s Point Queenstown, Cargo is the ideal spot for lunch after coming down from Coronet Peak.

But, it’s also well worth driving around from Queenstown village for dinner or drinks in the afternoon or evening too.

Grab a spot near the fire in winter or if you are travelling to Queenstown in summer enjoy their vast outdoor beer garden.

Order from their menu filled with comfort food and delicious farm-to-table options. They have a Sunday roast on Sundays.

White and Wong’s

White and Wong’s Asian restaurant Queenstown serves up elevated street food with influences from all over Asia.

The food was delicious and our kids even loved everything we tried – from dumplings to Peking duck pancakes.

If you are travelling to Queenstown with a bigger group this Queenstown restaurant also has rooms to book for functions and private dining.

Winnie’s Gourmet Pizza Bar

Another of the most iconic Queenstown eateries, Winnie’s Gourmet Pizza Bar has a fun, vibrant atmosphere and lots of beer.

There are some unique pizza options on the menu, such as the ‘Mexican Fiesta’ including corn chips.

They can open the roof if it gets a little stuffy inside, and it’s also a great place to go if you want to kick on dancing and drinking after dinner.

Lone Star Cafe & Restaurant

The heading for this section might as well be, “BEST RIBS IN TOWN” because the ribs at Lone Star are to die for. Not to mention they are huge.

This is one of the best restaurants Queenstown has on offer for family-friendly or group dining. The pub-style menu has lots of variety, from burgers to delicious garlic prawns and burritos.

Plus, there’s a really decent kids’ menu and in true Queenstown fashion, the produce is high quality.

The Best Fine-Dining Restaurants in Queenstown

There are so many date-night or fancy night-out options when it comes to where to eat in Queenstown.

Jervois Steak House

I enjoyed the best steak I have ever eaten at Jervois Steak House, probably the fanciest of the Queenstown steak restaurants

The epitome of fine dining Queenstown style, the focus is on using super fresh local ingredients, and the meat is the hero without too much fussy fusion of flavours.

It’s one of those steak high-end restaurants where you can examine the marbling before you choose your cut.

Spoil yourself and get the Wagyu Sirloin.

Botswana Butchery

Botswana Butchery has long been considered one of the best Queenstown restaurants (that has now made its way from Queenstown to Sydney), so be sure to book a table well in advance.

It sits right on the picturesque Lake Wakatipu, giving it a beautiful ambience.

The menu is changed seasonally and focuses on strong flavours with fine-cut meats and locally-sourced produce.

The Bunker

We found The Bunker was one of the best places to eat in Queenstown during our stay.

One of the features that surely help its ranking as one of the best Queenstown restaurants is the fact that it is so intimate.

Hidden in a secret alleyway and behind a rustic, old, wooden door, with log fires and dim lighting adding a beautiful ambience.

The perfect setting for a date night, we got comfortable with a cute table across from the fire in the softly lit space and worked our way through one of the Bunker’s tasting menus with matching wines.

Blue Kanu

When I asked a local where to eat in Queenstown her immediate response was Blue Kanu.

While we couldn’t get a booking during our visit, it’s on our list for next time, the Polynasian (Pacifica and Asian fusion) fare looks like it would make your taste buds dance.

Our Favourite Bars in Queenstown

We couldn’t simply cover where to eat in Queenstown without mentioning a few of our favourite central Queenstown bar finds too.

Eichardt’s Bar

Eichardt’s Bar was recommended to me as her favourite Queenstown Bar. As soon as we walked into the luxurious Alpine-chic apres space, it immediately became mine too.

As you’d expect from a high-end cocktail lounge, there is a very impressive curated cocktail list.

We couldn’t settle on one visit to Eichardt’s and found it our favourite pre and post-dinner aperitif venue.

The Bunker Cocktail Bar

We popped up to the Bunker Cocktail Bar after our delightful degustation at Bunker Restaurant downstairs.

In the short time we were there, it became clear Bunker would be a late-night favourite for partygoers for sure.

When we first sat down, we easily found seats and enjoyed ample elbow room. A short while later we were contending with the DJ and buzzing bar space.

The Lodge Bar

The designer interiors invite guests into the warm space at The Lodge Bar, right on the Queenstown lakefront.

We happened upon the Lodge Bar when looking for an early dinner at the last minute.

Sitting alfresco complete with blankets and heaters, we shared some plates from the food menu paired with an incredible glass of Otago red, recommended by our very lovely waiter.

While I wouldn’t recommend this to others dining with very young children (it’s a bit fancy), the staff was so kind and inviting to our kids.

I will absolutely return again with friends or for a date night bite.

We also thought it was some of the best food Queenstown has to offer.

Ferg’s Bar

Seemingly a world away from the chaotic burger rush next door, Ferg’s Bar was a Queenstown dining delight.

We wandered into Ferg’s initially for a quick drink while we worked out where to have lunch. And, by chance, the food menu was delivered and it was a dream.

So, we sat in the window, perched at the benchtop quietly tucked away from the masses but close enough for a really good serving of people-watching with our perfectly palatable share plates.

We circled the snow-capped mountains as the plane made small anticipatory hops to match those of our four-year-old clawing at the chilled cabin window.

Queenstown is a resort town on the North-West coast of New Zealand’s South Island.

Central Queenstown wraps around the shores of Lake Wakatipu and it is the ideal place to base yourself, particularly on your first visit.

In town, there are ample cafes fine dining restaurants, fun Queenstown activities for kids, and plenty of rowdy and upmarket bars for those keen to stay out late.

Planning Your Queenstown Winter Trip

One of the reasons Queenstown is such a popular destination with Australian travelers is that it is such an easy place to reach from Australia.

It only takes 3 hours to fly from Sydney to Queenstown which is particularly great news for those travelling with babies or toddlers.

I highly recommend booking your rental car and/or your airport transfers as soon as you decide to visit. Especially in peak season cars will book out and taxi numbers are limited.

Don’t forget to book a big enough car for all of that extra snow gear, and get full insurance as you’ll be driving on slippery roads, and parking in some pretty precarious spots on the mountain. Also, don’t forget snow chains.

It’s just a 20-minute drive from Queenstown airport into town.

It is also important to pre-book your restaurants if you are traveling to Queenstown in winter peak times (like the school holidays).

The village is buzzing with people. Make a reservation or you’ll quite literally be left out in the cold (even if you try to get a table early).

How cold does it get in New Zealand in winter? The weather in Queenstown winter isn’t as chilly as in Canada or Japan (it gets down to about 5C during the day and at night that will drop to -1C or -2C).

Accommodation in Queenstown

If you don’t have a car you will want to book accommodation in Queenstown city centre.

There are buses to Frankton and the ski resorts from town and being in a central location will make it much easier at the end of the day when you’re tired and the temperature drops and you need to go get groceries or venture out for dinner. 

We stayed at a 5-star hotel in Queenstown by Accor, Hotel St Moritz which was a short 5-minute walk to the village.

We booked an Alpine Suite (1 bedroom Lake View with a balcony). The room had a small kitchenette area with a sink and fridge and coffee and tea.

If a 2-bedroom had been available it would have been a better option for us. I would also have preferred a kitchen with a cooktop.

Otherwise, we had gorgeous views of the lake over to The Remarkables and really enjoyed watching the sunset each night. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was excellent.

There are a number of other big 5-star hotels in Queenstown such as The Sofitel, The Hilton Queenstown Resort and Spa, and the QT Queenstown, among others.

The Eichardt Private Hotel is a boutique 5-star property on the lakefront that would be my pick for a splurge stay if I were travelling as a couple. We went to the cocktail bar in this stunning boutique hotel numerous times and it quickly became our favourite Queenstown bar.

The Novotel and the Crowne Plaza are 4-star Queenstown hotels right in the heart of the village.

We spent one night at the Crown Plaza. The location of this hotel is amazing, right across from Steamer Wharf, the room was clean and the breakfast was good with a clear view straight across to the lake from the dining room.

While there are a few hotels with family rooms, the best Queenstown family accommodation would probably be a rental house or apartment within walking distance of town.

What to Pack for Winter in Queenstown

You will need to dress appropriately as many Queenstown activities in winter are enjoyed outdoors under the clear-blue winter skies.

These are a few of the basics you should pack for Queenstown;

Take a down jacket each. We got these reversible down jackets for our kids and layered them with thermals, wool knits, and polar fleece tops, depending on the weather and time of day.

Thick warm socks, a scarf, a beanie, and gloves, especially when skiing or walking around in the early hours and once the sun drops.

We also got snow boots for our kids. They wore them on and off the mountain.

Thermals are essential when packing for Queenstown (we prefer Merino to synthetic fibers as they breathe).

Thankfully, New Zealand has some high-quality Merino brands if you forget to pack them.

There are also charming boutiques if you are shopping in Arrowtown or Wanaka where you can buy wool and alpaca knitwear and other clothing made by local makers and artisans.

Things to do in Queenstown in Winter

Most of these Queenstown winter activities can actually be done year-round. That’s the beauty of Queenstown – it’s a destination that draws visitors for the whole year, similar to Whistler in Canada.

It’s easy to see why some people go on a Queenstown vacation and never leave.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Queenstown

It should come as no surprise that leading the list of Queenstown winter activities are the winter sports it is famed for. There are four snowsports mountains within reach of the town.

Choosing which ski resort to visit, may come down to how close each is to your accommodation, the commute, the apres scene, night ski sessions, or which runs they have open at the time of your visit.

Now, more than ever it’s important to buy your lift passes early if you can. The mountains are trying to manage overcrowding by controlling capacity. That means they are tightening up on ticket sales and making you specify which mountain you want to ride on.

Buying your Queenstown lift passes early generally means you get a better deal with early bird lift pass packages too.

Ski, board, and gear hire is available on all the mountains and in the snow shops in town. This can also be pre-booked and may save you time waiting when you arrive.

Coronet Peak

Queenstown to Coronet Peak only takes about 20 minutes by car.

There is also the ski bus that leaves from the Man St Carpark (follow the crowds of kitted-up skiers with coffee in hand).

Coronet Peak has 3 chairlifts, 1 t-bar, and a few surface lifts.

For apres, join those in the know at Heidi’s Hut for a fireside drink or pizza, located near the Rocky Gully T-Bar.

Keen skiers will also be enticed by Coronet Peak’s famous Night Ski sessions when the mountain is lit up and the apres game is on full tilt.

We loved Coronet Peak ski fields as they cater to first-time skiers well and importantly they have a daycare and ski school for kids, Skiwiland. Book in early for Skiwiland as they cater to limited numbers.

We booked our son into the early childhood offering at Skiwiland. He did both indoor activities and outdoor winter activities like snow play and absolutely loved it.

Our daughter was part of the older program for 3 to 5-year-olds that includes beginner ski lessons at Coronet Peak. She had such a positive experience. Our kids were at Skiwiland for 3 days and that was enough time on the snow for them.

The beauty of Coronet Peak for non-skiers in Queenstown is that your family can ski for a half-day from the first tracks at 8 am and you can easily collect them with time to make lunch in town afterward. This is something we did a couple of times.

The Remarkables

‘Remarks’ as the locals like to call it is a little further from town. Queenstown to the Remarkables is a 45-minute drive.

This is another good Queenstown ski resort for beginners, with an easily accessible, wide, protected learning area. I have done a snowboarding lesson at Remarkables and loved the conveyors and ample area for learning those first turns.

There are 4 conveyor lifts in total and 4 chairlifts.

Non-skiers can try their hand at tobogganing or riding a Yooner (a cross between a ski and a sled), snowshoeing or even catching a chair to hike Shadow Basin to enjoy the view. The mountain has cheap lift passes known as sightseeing passes with limited access and hours if you aren’t skiing.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a childcare service at the Remarkables. However, they do offer lessons for 4 years and up. They also have a Parent Pass option where each parent can take turns to ski, while the other spends time with the kids.

Cardrona

Queenstown to Cardona is about a 50-minute drive (depending on the condition of the road).

Cardrona is another fantastic choice for those visiting Queenstown with kids as it also has a daycare and a ski school for little kids, Ski Kindy.

As with Coronet Peak, you should book places early for the nursery (3 months – 3 years) and Ski Kindy (for 2-5 year-olds) as places are limited.

Cardrona is set up well for beginner skiers with wide runs and the McDougall’s Chondolas (chair-style gondolas) in the main basin, so they don’t have to contend with the dreaded T-bar while learning.

The Cardona terrain offers 25% beginner, 25% Intermediate, 30% Advanced and 20% Expert ranked runs.

Allow enough time to stop at the iconic Cardrona Hotel on the way over or for a post-skiing snack on the way home.

Treble Cone

If you’re staying outside of Queenstown or you’re up for a drive, Treble Cone might be enticing.

The drive from Queenstown to Treble Cone takes about 2 hours. Treble Cone is a 40-minute drive from Wanaka.

Treble Cone is the largest ski resort in Queenstown. But, only about 10% of the terrain is suited to beginners. They also don’t offer beginner lessons at the resort.

The uncrowded, steep runs are suited to intermediate and advanced skiers with challenging off-piste offerings.

Things to do in Queenstown for Non-Skiers

Luckily, this is not just a skiing town. So, if you are a non-skier you won’t be at a loss for what to do in Queenstown in winter. There is so much more on offer than just heading up the mountain.

Go Jet boating

One of the many things to do around Queenstown for thrill-seekers, jet boating on the Shotover River is a Queenstown must-do.

Shotover Jet is located just past the turn-off to Coronet Peak and over the Edith Cavell Bridge.

Passes range from individual to family or combination passes for those wanting to do the Canyon Swing as well.

The child-friendly Canyon Brewing is just next door, perfectly located for spectators or a post-ride lunch.

Dart River Safaris offers jetboating adventures on the glacier-fed Dart River for those daredevils going on a day trip to Glenorchy (an hour’s drive from Queenstown).

The 2-hour tour takes guests through the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Mount Aspiring National Park. We were spectators during our visit to Glenorchy and it looked incredibly picturesque, albeit very chilly on the water.

If you don’t have a car, both companies offer a shuttle service.

Ride the Queenstown Gondola

The Skyline or Queenstown Gondola is one of the best things to do in Queenstown with kids.

There is parking on the corner of Man and Brecon Streets if you aren’t staying within walking distance.

Grab breakfast at the very cute Bespoke Kitchen around the corner on Isle Street and wander up to the gondola on opening to grab one of the first cars up the mountain.

You can pre-purchase tickets online to save time waiting in line.

Famous as the steepest cable car in the southern hemisphere, the kids will love the descent up to the mountain with a view back down over the village in the valley below.

Once up the top of Bob’s Peak, enjoy the panoramic view and take some snapshots, have a snack at the restaurant, or ride the luge back down.

If you go up the gondola in the afternoon book in for an early dinner or roll straight into apres, back in the village afterward.

The gondola is closed between late April and July 1. Tickets range from single to family passes (children under 5 rides free) and combinations for luge riders.

If you have a foldable pram (we took on our Nano) it will fit in the gondola. Make sure you dress warmly as the wind gets icy up the top.

Pack your comfortable pants for your trip because this is a food destination to rival the best winter resorts around the world.

Dining out at one of the many restaurants is one of the top things to do in Queenstown.

From casual cafes, takeaway goodies for the ride up the mountain, or fireside fine dining, there is something for everyone.

Spend a Romantic Afternoon at the Onsen

One of the most special activities in Queenstown in winter has to be a visit to an Onsen.

Onsen Hot Pools in Arthurs Point Queenstown offers the ideal date afternoon or a fun place to hang out with friends.

Onsen Hot Pools books out months in advance, so as soon as you book your Queenstown trip, book an afternoon spot here.

We missed an afternoon booking but managed to book a post-dinner soak.

On arrival, guests wait in the swanky lounge area and choose their refreshment package. They are then ushered to the private onsen room where drinks, towels, and the tub await.

You are left for an hour, music playing in the background. A subtle bell chime is a warning to prepare to exit the tub and get dressed.

While it wasn’t as magical as it would have been catching the sunset from the tub, we still had a relaxing time with a glass of wine looking off into the darkness and enjoying the fresh air.

I would definitely consider this a Queenstown must-do.

Cruise on the Steamship TSS Earnslaw

A cruise on the steamship TSS Earnslaw is one of the most popular activities in Queenstown for families combining scenery, mini-adventure, delicious food, and the outdoors.

Launched the same year as the Titanic, the 1912 vessel was originally commissioned to help connect farming families living along the lake to town.

Now, the iconic more than 100-year-old steamboat carries guests across Lake Whakatipu from Queenstown, passing The Remarkables and on to Walter Peak High Country Farm.

During the trip, guests can relax on the deck with a drink or snack or visit the mini-museum or see the steam room in action.

There are several ticket options for activities once at Walter Peak. From a horse-riding tour (7 years+) to cycling, a long lunch to a farm tour.

If you are in Queenstown with kids, book the afternoon crossing. Children will love the farm tour and a leisurely afternoon tea. Then, you will be returning to the bay in time for an early dinner. Pre-book at one of these awesome Queenstown restaurants.

The Steamship TSS Earnslaw is undergoing maintenance between mid-May and the end of June.

Get Your Adrenaline Pumping

A famed hub for adrenaline junkies, there are so many fun things to do in Queenstown to get your heart pumping. 

AJ Hackett has several adventures in Queenstown for daredevils. There are a few Bungy jump spots, choose to get catapulted across the Nevis Valley, do an extreme swing ride, or do the (slightly) more family-friendly Kawarau zip ride (8 years+).

Just don’t jump dehydrated or after a large apres session the night before or you might blow a blood vessel in your eye as The Hubby did.

Relax at a Queenstown Day Spa

A visit to a day spa is an indulgent Queenstown winter activity for non-skiers or those fresh off the mountain. Unsurprisingly, many agree so try to book your spa visit even before you land so you don’t miss out.

I booked a treatment at So Spa at the Sofitel, buoyed by the hype that this is one of the best spas in Queenstown, and in desperate need of some attention for a back injury.

Thankfully, they could squeeze me in for a massage at the last minute. While it wasn’t up there with the best spa treatments in the world, my therapist was lovely and I would definitely book in again if I were staying at the hotel.

Toward the end of our week in Queenstown, I also booked a spa package at Body Sanctum.

I really loved the whole treatment and felt so comfortable with my therapist (which is important when you’re spending hours with them). I will absolutely be returning on my next visit.

Take a Lake Wakatipu Walk

One of our favourite activities and one of the most beautiful things to do in Queenstown for free is a Lake Wakatipu walk.

If you’re up early as we were, make sure you dress warmly in layers (with a beanie, scarf, and gloves) and say good morning to the ducks as you start in Queenstown Bay.

These are three Queenstown walks – each a little longer than the last;

Stroll or power walk your way towards Glenorchy along the lakefront where you can grab a cheeky morning coffee, (Vudu Cafe and Larder opens early and has yummy coffee).

Then walk past the Steamer Wharf restaurants onto Beach Street which will lead you to a little rocky beach and Saint Omer Park.

This is an ideal spot for some early morning photographs with The Remarkables in the background.

Then wind your way back to the Bathhouse Restaurant again. This is only a cute, easy walk (about 2km / 1.2 mi), suitable if you are travelling with toddlers.

The Queenstown Garden Trail is a little bit longer (3 km / 1.8 mi). You will head towards the north end of the bay beach and follow the signs which will lead along the pathway and lead you around the botanical gardens loop.

If you are in Queenstown with kids, they will love to finish with a play at the Bathhouse playground afterward on either of these walks.

Book a table for breakfast or grab a morning coffee at the historic Bathhouse Restaurant.

This is also the perfect thing to do in the afternoon and then you can finish with an early dinner overlooking the lake as the sun goes down.

If you have a little more energy, book one of our favourite Queenstown cafes, The Boat Shed (it opens at about 8 am) and walk your way along the Frankton Trail to breakfast and back.

The views from the track are breathtaking and the cafe has delicious food in a cozy setting (the building dates back to the 1800s).

You’ll find it hard to resist taking one of their delicious counter goodies back to your hotel for afternoon tea.

Taste Some New Zealand Wines

Queenstown wines are well known around the world, especially the incredible and very-drinkable Pinot Noir.

The beauty of Queenstown wineries (or those close by) too, is that many are family-friendly. So, you can book in at a restaurant, do a wine tasting and there are activities for kids to keep them entertained.

We loved Akarua Winery for a long lunch with the kids. Kinross (where you can also stay) and Amisfield also come highly recommended by friends.

Booking is highly recommended for all wineries, even for simple tastings.

The easiest way to experience a number of wineries is to book a Queenstown wine tour (like this half-day tour with lunch) that will do all of the bookings for you and shuttle you around.

Go Shopping in Frankton

A visit to Queenstown Central Shopping Centre is a fun option if you are looking for things to do in Queenstown in winter, especially when the weather isn’t great.

This cluster of Queenstown outdoor shops is a one-stop destination with ample parking.

If you need more ski gear there are shops like Mountain Warehouse and Macpac.

There is a big supermarket, a pharmacy, and other essential shops.

The gorgeous little health food store, Soul Food Organics where you can try some delicious local products (they also deliver). I picked up some amazing kombucha, organic fruit, and snacks for the kids here.

If you need activities for kids or odds and ends, Kmart is there too. You’ll also find some casual Queenstown cafes here too for an easy lunch.

And, if you are caught in Queenstown in the rain with children, Chipmunks Playland and Game Over indoor go-karting are both five minutes drive away.

Visit the Lakefront Markets

If you are in town on a Saturday, visiting the markets is a must-do in Queenstown.

A low-key afternoon activity, you can watch the local buskers and buy some artisanal goods to take home as gifts. 

Stop in at Patagonia Chocolates for one of their legendary ice creams to eat while you wander.

Grab a Drink at an Ice Bar

If you are looking for unique things to do in Queenstown at night, have a drink in the igloo-like Ice Bar.

You’ll find Minus 5º ICE BAR down on Steamer Wharf. With packages for entry and a drink (with mocktails for kids or non-drinkers).

The team will kit you up in some warm gear and boots so you experience the space created from 18 tonnes of ice and snap lots of photos.

Positioned as more of a fancy, elevated experience, the Queenstown Ice Bar on Brecon Street (up near the Skyline), promises carefully built cocktails from premium pours (mocktails available). Their lounge is made from a huge 25 tonnes of ice.

Take a Road Trip out of Queenstown

Jump in the car and take in the incredible natural scenery on a few day trips from Queenstown.

While there are so many things to see in Queenstown itself, there are other wonderful towns not far away.

Pick from picturesque towns like Glenorchy, Wanaka, and Arrowtown, among others.

This is such a fun way to spend a day, see the sights, explore the shops, learn about the local history, and try some delicious food along the way.

You are now 9 years sober. Congratulations! Tell us a bit about your personal path to sobriety…

Thank you! It was around 13 years ago that I began secretly questioning whether I struggled with addiction. The harmful consequences of my drinking and drug use had started to far outweigh any benefits, and yet, I couldn’t seem to stop.

Like so many others, I had developed a pretty strong set of beliefs that I needed alcohol to socialize, have fun, release stress, date, and so forth.

I also fell into the trap of using external achievements like maintaining a high GPA and getting promoted at work to justify why I wasn’t that bad.

In 2010, I went to outpatient treatment and started attending AA meetings for a brief period but quickly went back to drinking, convinced I could get a handle on it. Those next few years were filled with a lot of denial, inner turmoil, and confusion because of it.

I finally had a wake-up call on April 27, 2013, and made the decision to surrender fully to the path of recovery with a newfound enthusiasm for building a fulfilling life free from addiction. 

What role did yoga play in your recovery and lifestyle shift? 

It’s played such an important role, it’s hard to know where to begin.

For one, my daily yoga and meditation practice helps me stay anchored in the present moment, which immediately alleviates so much of the suffering tied to past experiences and fears about the future.

It’s increased my capacity to be with discomfort, versus seeking relief through substances or harmful behaviors.

It’s enabled me to access and widen the space between impulse and action, which leads to more conscious decision-making.

Yoga also offers us a powerful set of tools to regulate the nervous system when the relief we’ve become accustomed to is no longer available to us. This is also important because when we’re dysregulated, we’re much more susceptible to cravings.

Having that daily check-in has allowed me to pick up on early warning signs when I’m off balance, and make necessary shifts in my day to prioritize self-care when needed, even if that’s just taking a little bit of time to disconnect and take a walk in nature.

I really believe all healing and self-care should have an integrated mind-body approach. 

Was the shift for you gradual or quite immediate once you had decided to become sober? 

I would say both. My life changed pretty dramatically from an outward perspective after getting sober.

I quit my job in digital advertising, got certified to become a yoga teacher, and moved across the world all within the first year.

But the real inner work has been much more gradual and will be a lifelong journey.

When I first got sober, I needed to relearn healthy ways to navigate difficult emotions, and social situations, rebuild confidence, practice self-care, and so forth, and all of that takes time.

Would you say your practice is essential for maintaining your sobriety on a daily basis?  

Definitely. There’s an obvious shift in the way I feel when I don’t make time for some form of conscious movement or meditation.

Even if it’s just a super short and simple check-in, it’s been key and I genuinely look forward to it!

What do you think the hardest part of the journey has been for you? 

Overcoming my fear of how my relationships would be impacted and learning to navigate social situations where alcohol is present.

I will say though, for anyone who has that fear, sobriety has been the greatest thing to happen to my social life and relationships.

The work has really been about deconstructing where those beliefs come from and practicing self-acceptance.

How is your life different now from a decade ago? 

10 years ago I was living in Chicago, working in a cubicle under artificial lights at a digital advertising agency.

I was drinking seven nights a week and using Adderall and cocaine to fuel a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle.

I was completely disconnected from myself and nature.

Today, my priorities have changed completely. I find incredible joy in the simple things. Getting outside in nature every day, conscious movement, meditation, and genuine human connection are non-negotiables.

I still have challenging days, but I don’t turn to coping strategies that ultimately make my life worse.

Above all, I’m grateful that I’ve gotten to spend most of the last decade sharing what I love – hosting retreats internationally, teaching yoga and meditation, and coaching others through their recovery journey.

What would you say to someone who is sober-curious on how to get sober or begin that journey? 

1. Try taking a month off of alcohol, and notice how your life changes. I always recommend This Naked Mind by Annie Grace, a paradigm-shifting book that has really expanded the conversation about sobriety beyond addiction recovery circles. This will help with making an honest inquiry into what’s shaped your beliefs about alcohol up until this point and the true impact it’s having on your life. 
2. Start to follow people who normalize sobriety versus glamorize drinking.
3. Listen to podcasts (like the Sun & Moon Sober Living Podcast).
4. Join sober communities online and in person.
5. Explore new hobbies and activities that don’t involve drinking, and keep an open mind!

Everyone has unique circumstances, so in some cases, seeking out support from a therapist is useful and necessary.

At what point in your own recovery did you realize you now had the capacity to help others on their journey? 

I think we can all help others in meaningful ways by simply offering a non-judgmental ear and providing unconditional love and support, and I’ve always made an effort to offer the same generous support to the recovery community that was given to me.

On a professional level, it was after three years of continuous sobriety and completing specialized training in trauma-informed yoga, addiction recovery, and Y12SR Leadership Training that I hosted my first workshop on Yoga for Addiction Recovery.

I later became certified as a Professional Recovery Coach before beginning to work 1:1 and in a group coaching format.

You live in a very beautiful but quite rural part of the world. Do you think that makes it any easier to stay sober? How much of a factor is your environment? 

Yes and no. There’s a lot of research to support how being in a natural environment can lower stress hormone levels, reduce anxiety, enhance mood, and calm the nervous system, and all of those factors support sobriety.

Living close to nature has also typically meant living close to others who prioritize a healthy lifestyle, versus a city where you’re more likely to be surrounded by a heavy drinking culture.

That said, I really resonate with the quote, “Wherever you go, there you are” and don’t think you can rely solely on a location cure. I’ve had to confront my own inner demons, even in paradise!

What first sparked the idea for Sun & Moon Sober Living?

The idea to help end the stigma around addiction and serve the recovery community had been brewing in me for a long time.

But, it was the rapid decline in mental health and increase in alcohol consumption during the pandemic that drove me to take action on it.

How is this program different from others offered around the world? 

It’s an inclusive, community-based approach that doesn’t require you to identify as an alcoholic or addict or assume any labels.

We promote the message that sobriety is an empowered lifestyle choice that everyone can benefit from, and aim to remove the stigma of sobriety that can so often stand in the way of people feeling their best.

The focus is on getting to the root of what drives us to turn to substances and harmful behaviors in the first place and establishing a holistic set of self-care practices to promote sustainable long-term sobriety. 

The name Sun & Moon also carries a lot of symbolism.

It’s about embracing the entirety of the human experience, the light, and the dark; acknowledging our cyclical nature, growth, and decay, and creating harmony within ourselves, each other, and our environment. 

What can participants expect when they join your program? 

The Holistic Sober Living Course is an opportunity to deconstruct your beliefs about alcohol and begin building a fulfilling life alcohol-free.

Participants can expect a total mindset shift around drinking, and to walk away with a solid set of skills and practices that support making positive changes in all areas of their lives.

We cover the physiological impact of drinking on the body, and the nervous system, the science of behavior change, habit formation, establishing healthy boundaries, practical skills like how to turn down alcohol in social situations, navigating shame, self-compassion and so much more.

It’s an 8-week group program with 8 unique video training modules, 8 live group coaching calls, a workbook, an on-demand library of guided meditations, and a private group chat.

What kind of support is offered after those initial intensive 8 weeks? 

I offer free virtual community gatherings, which anyone can be a part of, as well as 1:1 coaching for ongoing support.

There is also an abundance of free resources shared across social, on my email list, and weekly podcast episodes with leading experts in the field of addiction recovery, mental health, and yoga and meditation.

What plans lay ahead for Sun and Moon?

We just completed the first group program, and enrolment has just opened for the next group.
